Botanical extracts: alternative control for silverleaf whitefly management in tomato Extratos botânicos: controle alternativo para o manejo de mosca-branca em tomateiro Horticultura Brasileira
Baldin,Edson LL; Fanela,Thiago LM; Pannuti,Luiz ER; Kato,Massuo J; Takeara,Renata; Crotti,Antônio EM.
Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) biotype B is one of the most limiting pests of tomato crops in the world. Tomato yield is currently dependent on the use of pesticides, which are problematic to farmers, consumers and the environment. A promising alternative to reduce the harmful effects caused by the indiscriminated use of synthetic insecticides is the use of insecticides of botanical origin. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 3% (w/v) aqueous extracts from different structures of thirteen botanical species on the behavior of B. tabaci biotype B adults, as well as insecticidal activity of such aqueous extracts on B. tabaci eggs, nymphs, and adults infesting tomato plants. A distilled water solution was used as a negative control, and...

Bioecologia e caracterização de danos de Neopamera bilobata (Say, 1832) (Hemiptera: Rhyparochromidae) em morangueiro. Infoteca-e

Nieuwe en interessante Nederlandse wantsen V. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) Naturalis
Aukema, B..

The Pentatomoidea (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) of Sub-Saharan Africa : a database Naturalis
Robertson, I.A.D..
Introduction The purpose of this database is to list all the taxonomic publications on this Superfamily in Sub-Saharan Africa until the year 2000. It is also intended to give an indication of the kind of information contained in each paper. No attempt has been made to change or criticise what authors have written. Instead the intent has been to record accurately the published material. This database does not deal with higher classification, except when the terms are, for clarity, used as part of a recent revision, such as Kumar 1974 on Acanthosomidae. There are eleven groupings within the superfamily and all have been given family status. The treatment of each family varies, depending on the present level of knowledge and whether recent revisions or...

Developmental origins of normal and anomalous random right-left asymmetry: lateral inhibition versus developmental error in a threshold trait Naturalis
Palmer, A.R..
Dramatic examples of right-left asymmetry often inspire adaptive explanations, simply because it is hard to imagine how such forms could not be functionally significant. But are conspicuous morphological asymmetries necessarily adaptive? Surprisingly, in some species where direction of asymmetry is random, asymmetry in bilaterally paired traits may arise as a developmental error in a threshold trait. When cases of asymmetry are rare within a species, they are easily recognized as developmental errors. However, as asymmetrical individuals become more common, or if the asymmetry is in a signaling trait, the temptation to advance an adaptive explanation grows, particularly if the asymmetry is not clearly maladaptive. Several models of the ontogeny of...

The whiteflies of The Netherlands, including two species new for the Dutch fauna (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) Naturalis
Jansen, M.G.M..
An annotated list is given of whitefly species of the Netherlands, occurring in the open, indoors in greenhouses and living rooms and those intercepted during import inspections. In this paper over 50 species are mentioned, 14 of which occur in the open, 6 species have been only found in greenhouses and 42 species have been intercepted during quarantine inspections. The majority of the observations stem from the period 1970-2010. Aleurotuba jelinekii and Siphoninus immaculatus are new for the Netherlands, occurring outdoors. Due to regular introductions of species living on traded plants the chance that new species will establish is enhancing.

Development of a dry artificial diet for Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Fortes,Priscila; Magro,Sandra R.; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Parra,José R.P..
Artificial diets prepared with wheat germ, soybean protein, dextrosol, potato starch, sucrose, cellulose, soybean or sunflower oil, and vitamin solution for rearing Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) were tested under controlled temperature (25 ± 1°C), RH (60 ± 10%), and photophase (14h). Three diets were tested and compared with the natural diet privet [soybean and peanut seeds and privet Ligustrum lucidum Ait. fruit (Oleaceae)]. All three artificial diets allowed full development. The diet containing sunflower oil was the most suitable for N. viridula while E. heros developed better on a diet composed of soybean oil. Data indicated that the artificial diets were inferior to the natural diet. The artificial diets were more adequate for...

Ultrastructural and functional aspects of the spermatheca in the american harlequin bug, Murgantia histrionica (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Stacconi,MVR; Romani,R.
The spermatheca of Murgantia histrionica (Hahn) was investigated using fluorescence, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The aim of the study was to elucidate the structure of this organ, pointing out differences between mated and unmated females. Results have shown an elaborated cuticular structure associated with muscular and glandular tissues. The spermatheca is joined with the common oviduct by the spermathecal duct, forming a thin saccular dilation through two consecutive invaginations. The distal part of the organ is formed by a series of two communicating cuticular chambers. The first cylindrical-shaped chamber, corresponding to the coiled region, is wrapped by longitudinal muscular fibers suspended between two cuticular flanges. The...

Evaluation of insecticides in different dosages to control cicadas in parica plantations PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Monteiro, Odineila Martins; Lunz, Alexandre Mehl; de Azevedo, Roni; Mourão Junior, Moisés; Batista, Telma Fátima Vieira.
This study aimed to determine the more efficient and economically viable dosage of chemical insecticide to control Quesada gigas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) nymphs in parica plantations. Three dosages of three products (carbofuran, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam) were tested based on the maximum recommended dosage for the control of cicadas in coffee plants and applied in total area. The dosage of one kilogram of a commercial product based in thiamethoxam per hectare was more efficient economically and environmentally to control nymphs of Q. gigas in parica plantations.

Gall-inducing insects of restinga areas (Atlantic Forest) in Brazil: economic importance Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Maia,Valéria Cid.
Abstract Many gall-inducing insects have been reported as pests in the Old World and North America, although few such examples are known from South America. A list of gall-inducing insects of potential economic importance, with a focus on those of restinga environments, was compiled using Maia (2013a) as starting point and updated with the database “Thompson ISI”, using ‘Insect (title) and gall (topic)’ as keywords. Botanical names were updated using the site “Flora do Brasil, 2020”, while potential economic significance of host plant species was acquired from Santos et al. (2009) and the site “Useful Tropical Plants”. Fifty-eight galling species were associated with 29 economically important plant species of 18 families in Brazilian restingas. The gallers...
