STORAGE POTENTIAL OF PEELED CRAMBE FOR OIL QUALITY REA
Santos,Silas da S.; Biaggioni,Marco A. M.; Monteiro,Iara M. C.; Sartori,Maria M. P.; Brandão,Fernando J. B..
ABSTRACT Peeling of crambe fruits, besides increasing the yield of mechanical oil extraction, can increase its apparent specific mass from about 330 to 700 kgm−3, reducing transport and storage operating costs, as well as increasing cake protein content. However, there is no information on the quality of the oil extracted from the stored unpeeled crambe. This study aimed to assess the possible effects of peeling fruits submitted to different storage systems. For nine months, peeled and unpeeled crambe fruits were stored in conventional (permeable) and hermetic packages and water content, fatty acid, and acidity and oil peroxide indices were monitored. The experimental design was a completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 x 3triple factorial, with three...

AN INITIAL INVESTIGATION OF THE POTENTIAL FOR HERMETIC PURDUE IMPROVED CROP STORAGE (PICS) BAGS TO IMPROVE INCOMES FOR MAIZE PRODUCERS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AgEcon
Jones, Michael; Alexander, Corinne E.; Lowenberg-DeBoer, James.
Pests like the larger grain borer (P. truncatus) and the maize weevil (S. zeamis) cause significant storage losses for African maize producers. The value of storage protection to a market-oriented farmer is a function of price seasonality, value loss prevention, and their opportunity costs of capital. Evidence suggests that hermetic technologies like Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags can be effective against these key maize storage pests, but sustainable technology transfer requires that it be profitable for producers. This analysis references dry weight loss figures from key life science articles and builds on previous value loss research to provide a geographic model for potential storage technology adoption. PICS bag profitability with one and...

Profitability of Hermetic Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) Bags for African Common Bean Producers AgEcon
Jones, Michael; Alexander, Corinne E.; Lowenberg-DeBoer, James.
Bruchid species like Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera) and Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera) cause significant storage losses for African common bean producers. The value of storage protection to a market-oriented farmer is a function of price seasonality, value loss prevention, and their respective opportunity costs of capital. Evidence suggests that hermetic technologies like Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags could be effective against key legume storage pests, but sustainable technology introduction requires that it be profitable for producers. While PICS bag effectiveness against these specific common bean bruchid species is still under investigation, this analysis references dry weight loss figures from life science articles and builds...

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Alternative Extension Methods: Triple-Bag Storage of Cowpeas by Small-Scale Farmers in West Africa AgEcon
Moussa, Bokar; Otoo, Miriam; Fulton, Joan R.; Lowenberg-DeBoer, James.
This study examined two questions related to the adoption of triple-bag storage technology for farmers storing cowpeas in West Africa. First the effect of an extension program, focused on village demonstrations, on adoption was considered. Second, the effect of radio messages to augment this extension program was analyzed. The results indicate that adoption was positively affected by the extension program and radio messages do augment the effectiveness.

Seed health of common bean stored at constant moisture and temperature Scientia Agricola
Francisco,Fabiana Gonçalves; Usberti,Roberto.
Fungal incidence in stored common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the main concern in order to preserve seed health and viability. The main aim of this study was to analyse these quality parameters in hermetically stored seeds at 10.2, 13.1, 16.2, 18.5% moisture content (MC) and 25, 30, 35, 40°C, through seed germination and health tests. Water activity recorded at 10.2 and 18.5% MC were 0.448 and 0.700, respectively. Low seed moisture content reduced Alternaria spp. incidence at 25-30°C. Highest incidence of Fusarium spp. (7.5%) occurred at 16.2% MC and 35-40°C. Highest incidences of Rhizoctonia spp. (8-10%) were recorded at 16.2-18.5% MC and 30-40°C. Penicillium spp. and Aspergillus spp. were predominant throughout the experiment and the highest...

Using hermetic storage method for preserving of rice seed, Phitsanulok 2 variety, in five storage packaging types; plastic bag, LDPE, Nylon, PET12 and Super bag. The experiment aimed to investigate the effect of hermetic storage method with several packaging types on rice seed quality. The split plot in RCB design was used, the main plot were 8% and 10% seed moisture contents while the sub plot were month of storage, for 24 months. Rice seed was contained in five storage packaging types with 5 and 20 kilogram during July 2012-July 2014 at Chiang Rai Rice Research Center warehouse. The result showed that seed stored at 8% and 10% moisture contents contained 5 and 20 kilogram of rice seed in four packaging could maintain rice seed quality follow the seed...
