Depuis 1991, des mortalités massives sporadiques sont rapportées, en France, de manière régulière chez des larves et des juvéniles de différentes espèces de mollusques bivalves marins. Certains de ces épisodes de mortalité ont pu être associés à la détection de virus. Ces derniers par leur morphologie, leur cycle de réplication et leur localisation ont été apparentés à la famille des Herpesviridae. Herpes-like viruses have been reported last decades in various marine mollusc species in association with mortality outbreaks throughout the world (Renault & Novoa 2004). One of these viruses isolated during French outbreaks has been characterised as an unassigned member of the Herpesviridae family and named ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1) or Pacific oyster herpes virus (Davison et al. 2005). Mortality of young Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas associated with the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) is occurring worldwide. Here, we examined for the first time the effect of salinity on OsHV-1 transmission and disease-related mortality of C. gigas, as well as salinity-related effects on the pathogen itself. To obtain donors for OsHV-1 transmission, we transferred laboratory-raised oysters to an estuary during a disease outbreak and then back to the laboratory. In 1972, Farley reported the presence of herpes-type viral particles in adult American oysters (Crassostrea virginica) for the first time. Since then, this pathogen has been detected in various marine bivalve species, usually associated with massive mortality events. To date, herpes-type viruses have been detected in the following species: C gigas, Ostrea edulis, O. angasi, Tiostrea chilensis, Ruditapes decussatus, R. philippinarum and most recently, Pecten maximus.

Au cours de l'été 1991, d'importantes mortalités de larves d'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, ont été observées dans des écloseries, simultanément en France (Comps et Cochennec, 1993) et en Nouvelle-Zélande (Hine & al., 1992). Les examens histologiques ainsi que des examens réalisés en microscopie électronique à transmission d'échantillons de larves présentant des mortalités ont permis de détecter la présence de particules virales associées à des lésions cellulaires. Development of a new diagnostic tool (Mini-Array) for ostreid Herpesvrus 1 (OsHV-1) detection in the Pacific oyster Crassostre gigas ArchiMer

OsHV-1 was the first herpesvirus to be identified in an invertebrate host and is associated to mortalities in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and other economically important bivalve species. Although a wide range of viruses have been reported in marine molluscs, most of these reports rely on ultrastructural examination and few of these viruses have been fully characterized. The lack of marine mollusc cell lines restricts virus isolation capacities and subsequent characterization works. Our current knowledge is mostly restricted to viruses affecting farmed species such as oysters Crassostrea gigas, abalone Haliotis diversicolor supertexta or the scallop Chlamys farreri.
