Electrophysiological measurements and related cytological controls were done on immature and submature oocytes of Homarus gammarus . By chromatography (HPLC) and radio-immunoassays (RIA) it was established that submature oocytes displayed different ecdysteroids. Furthermore, the structure of the stalk (funiculus) for the laid eggs attachment was analyzed. it consisted of the two superimposed vitelline envelopes which were likely modified by the cortical reaction exudate during the fertilization process. In addition, the successive secretory phases, regarding to the embryonic envelopes were evidenced. Finally, the ecdysteroid titers of embryonic stages were measured. This paper deals with the lobsters caught by French fishermen off the "Conquet" (Iroise sea) and off "Ile d'Yeu" (Biscay Bay) on the French atlantic coast. The size at first maturity, defined as the size at which 50 % of female are able to reproduce, is deduced from the analysis of size frequency in landings. It is also shown that more than 50 % of the mature female are spawing each year ; the periods of hatching in the natural environment are also established. Data concerning the impact of magnetic fields generated by these cables on marine invertebrates are scarce. In this context, the aim of this study was to explore the potential impact of anthropogenic static and time-varying magnetic fields on the behavior of recently settled juvenile European lobsters (Homarus gammarus) using two different behavioral assays. Several relationships between the fecundity and the weight or the size of females have been studied for three different (based on "eye-index") stages of incubation. The relationship between the average weight of eggs at the beginning of incubation and the size of the females shows that the egg size varies according to the female's size. Loss of eggs during incubation has been studied ; the average loss between the two extreme stages of incubation is around 27%. This is a lowered value of what accurs during the whole incubation period. Egg losses are greater for small females than for big females. The annual frequency of spawning and size at first maturity have been determined in for differents fishing effort than by the commercial size. Fishers from Le Croisic (France) measure all the lobsters (Homarus gammarus) they capture, indicating their sex and whether the females are ovigerous or non-ovigerous. Between 2003 and 2006 and mainly between April and September, 16 884 lobsters were measured in this manner. These self-sampled data were used to study catchability and functional maturity of lobsters. The sex ratio was 50%, and catchability did not change if a female was ovigerous or non-ovigerous. With the help of a logistic function, a relationship was established between body size and the proportion of ovigerous females. For the study area, 100% of the females were mature upon reaching a carapace length (CL) of 115 mm, and the proportion of ovigerous females reached 70% each year. The L50...
