Benthic communities of the Río de la Plata estuary and their trophic link with Micropogonias furnieri, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus, Cynoscion guatucupa, Macrodon ancylodon and Umbrina canosai, six species of the Sciaenidae Family, were studied. Benthic composition was characterized using 122 sampling sites between 1999 and 2005. Multivariate and univariate statistical tools were used to analyze diversity, abundance and biomass patterns. A total of 370 taxa were found at the study area. Four areas were established using benthic composition: Inner Río de la Plata (RdP), middle RdP, outer RdP and Marine zone. Higher abundance (9,877 ind/m2) and biomass (1,456.8 g/m2) values were found at middle RdP. Nephtys fluviatilis, Heteromastus... |

As a general rule, sharks and rays play an important role in the energy exchanges among higher trophic levels of the marine food chain and some of them, with an important impact as piscivorous predators. Squalus acanthias (Squalidae) and Raja flavirostris (=Dipturus chilensis )(Rajidae), are two elasmobranchs with high apparition frequencies in the SW Atlantic, in the coastal and demersal fishing trawls, co-existing and predating on the principal stocks of bony fish there located, especially the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Both species could be transformed into alternative fishing resources, even though they are not currently commercially developed as such. The knowledge on their biology, given in great detail, will provide information for a... |

The diet composition and feeding habits of Zapteryx brevirostris were studied through stomach contents analysis. 158 specimens were collected from 7 research cruises carried out by Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP, Argentina)between 2001 to 2004, in the Buenos Aires Province (Argentina) and Uruguay coasts (34°-41° S), until 50 m depth. Of the total stomach analysis, 81percentage contained food. According to the alimentary index expressed as a percentage (IA percentage ), indicated that polychaetes, decapods and lancelets were more consumed prey, representing 44.37percentage , 19.94 percentage and 17.36 percentage of the diet, respectively. The amphipods (8.74 percentage ), cumaceans (4.11percentage ) and isopods (3.29... |

The yellowtail kingfish, Seriola lalandi, Carangidae (Valenciennes, in Cuvier y Valenciennes, 1833) is a pelagic, schooling fish, with gregarious behaviour. It is a circumglobal species from tropical and temperate waters. Adult S. lalandi migrate to Argentine waters (SW Atlantic) during summer months (January-April). They have been reported from Argentine waters in depths of 20-36 m between 36°S and 38° and, as reported elsewhere in the world, are often associated with rocky reefs. Samples of S. lalandi were caught using trolling lines during daytime around rocky reefs at 35° 52'-35° 58'S and 54° 45'-54° 48'W, on February 15-22, 2002. Sixty-six adult S. lalandi were analyzed, with specimens measured (LT) and weighted (WT). The length-weight relationship... |
