Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide... |

The demersal phase (from 18th to November 01th, 1995) of cruise T95/10/04 DO, covered an area of 15632,6 km2 between 00º36'0”N-80º34'3”O and 03º22'8”S-80º49'5”O, of the Ecuadorian Continental Plataform, the depth range from 14 to 115 meters. 120 species were recorded, divided into 85 osseous fish species, three sharks, 11 ray, 18 crustaceans, two molluscan and one holothurid (sea cucumber). Total biomass was estimated as 95297,5 t; with 97,3% of this biomass distributed between 01º00'0”S and 03º23'S. The most abundant species were: barriga juma (Larimus spp) (11153 t), corvina (Cynoscion spp) (4523 t), gallineta (Prionotus spp) (55651 t), perela (Palabrax callaensis) (3774 t) and ravi junco (Centrithmus signifer) (2407 t). |

As a general rule, sharks and rays play an important role in the energy exchanges among higher trophic levels of the marine food chain and some of them, with an important impact as piscivorous predators. Squalus acanthias (Squalidae) and Raja flavirostris (=Dipturus chilensis )(Rajidae), are two elasmobranchs with high apparition frequencies in the SW Atlantic, in the coastal and demersal fishing trawls, co-existing and predating on the principal stocks of bony fish there located, especially the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Both species could be transformed into alternative fishing resources, even though they are not currently commercially developed as such. The knowledge on their biology, given in great detail, will provide information for a... |

The abundance, distribution and structure of the zooplankton community in southern Patagonia (SW Atlantic Ocean) were studied during late summer (March-April 2000) from samples obtained with Nackthai (390 ~km) and Multinet (150 ~km) samplers. Total concentrations of zooplankton biomass, integrated in the water column, ranged between 1.0 and 14.5 g m-2 (dry weight) and reached the highest values in the mid and outer shelf off Bahía Grande (Santa Cruz Prov., Argentina) (51~'S). The < 5 mm size fraction, composed mainly of copepods represented, on average, 45% of the total; amphipods and euphausiids accounted for 20% and 31%, respectively. Amphipods were, almost exclusively, Themisto gaudichaudii and euphausiids most abundant species Euphausia lucens and... |

The experimental survey done, in august 2005, in coastal marine zone (0 - 20 m) of Zarzis showed the existence of numerous species of shellfishes of which Tricolia speciosa, Smaragdia viridis, Nassarius incrassatus, Cerithium vulgatum and Gibbulla umbilicaris are the most important gasteropods and, Pinctada radiate and Donax trunculus the main bivalves. The biomasses estimation, based on the method of swept area, in the studied zone showed that P. radiate is the most abundant species with about 20 000 tones, followed by C. vulgatum (7 645 tones) and T. speciosa (more than 1 000 tones). The Donax trunculus biomass is very low with only 13 tones. Finally, the abundance indexes distribution cartography permitted us to note that it varies from one species to... |
