Genetic diversity and phylogeny in Hystrix (Poaceae, Triticeae) and related genera inferred from Giemsa C-banded karyotypes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Zhang,Hai-Qin; Yang,Rui-Wu; Zhang,Li; Ding,Chun-Bang; Zeng,Jian; Zhou,Yong-Hong.
The phylogenetic relationships of 15 taxa from Hystrix and the related genera Leymus (NsXm), Elymus (StH), Pseudoroegneria (St), Hordeum (H), Psathyrostachys (Ns), and Thinopyrum (E) were examined by using the Giemsa C-banded karyotype. The Hy. patula C-banding pattern was similar to those of Elymus species, whereas C-banding patterns of the other Hystrix species were similar to those of Leymus species. The results suggest high genetic diversity within Hystrix, and support treating Hy. patula as E. hystrix L., and transferring Hy. coreana, Hy. duthiei ssp. duthiei and Hy. duthiei ssp. longearistata to the genus Leymus. On comparing C-banding patterns of Elymus species with their diploid ancestors (Pseudoroegneria and Hordeum), there are indications that...

The fossil Porcupine Hystrix lagrelli Lonnberg, 1924 from the Pleistocene of China and Java and its phylogenetic relationships Naturalis
Weers, D.J. van.
The Pleistocene Hystrix vanbreei from Sangiran, Java, and Hystrix lagrelli from the Pleistocene of Henan, China are synonymized. The phylogenetic relationship of H. lagrelli with the subgenera Thecurus, Acanthion and Hystrix s.s. is discussed.

Biometric analysis and taxonomic allocation of Pleistocene Hystrix specimens (Rodentia, Porcupines) from China Naturalis
Weers, D.J. van; Shaohua, Zheng.
Early to Middle Pleistocene Hystrix material in the collections of the IVPP in Beijing, has been biometrically studied and compared with other fossil and extant species. The specimens are from Zhoukoudian (Beijing), the Liucheng Gigantopithecus cave (Guangxi) and other caves in that province, the Wazhuwan and Yanhui Cave (Guizhou) and from Longgupo (Sichuan). None of the fossil specimens can be allocated to the extant Chinese Hystrix brachyura subcristata Swinhoe, 1870, subgenus Acanthion F. Cuvier, 1823. Most of the collections studied consist of a mixture of two species with overlapping size ranges. Cheek teeth of most Hystrix species do not show diagnostic characters other than size, so not every one of them can be assigned with certainty to the larger...

Comparison of Neogene low-crowned Hystrix species (Mammalia, Porcupines, Rodentia) from Europe, West and Southeast Asia Naturalis
Weers, D.J. van.
The low-crowned Hystrix species known of the Neogene from Europe and Asia and some new finds from Shihuiba near Lufeng, South China, are compared on the basis of numerical data. The taxonomical allocation of the seven species recognised thus far is maintained. The occurrences of two coeval Eurasian late Turolian species is discussed. The material from Lufeng is described and allocated to Hystrix primigenia (Wagner, 1848), implicating an area of distribution of this species from S.E. Europe to S.E. Asia in the Turolian. In the northern Chinese Hystricidae the increase of the cheek tooth height is more advanced than in the the West Asiatic and European representatives. The difference in ecological environment of Hystrix gansuensis Wang & Qiu, 2002 (North...

Hystrix zhengi n. so., a brachyodont Porcupine (Rodentia) from early Nihewanian stage, early Pleistocene of China Naturalis
Weeks, D.J. van; Zhaoqun, Zhang.
A lower premolar from the Longgupo Cave, Sichuan, China and three lower premolars from the Liucheng Gigantopithecus Cave, Guangxi, are described as Hystrix zhengi n. sp. The localities Longgupo and Liucheng are of Early Nihewanian age, which correlates with the Late Pliocene (Villanyian) of Europe. The specimens are considered to represent a late occurrence of a brachyodont species, agreeing with the replacement of brachyodont Hystrix species by hypsodont ones in Europe during the Late Pliocene.
