Viability of a prediction system for tomato late blight in the integrated production of tomato in Caçador, Brazil Horticultura Brasileira
Becker,Walter F; Mueller,Siegfried; Santos,Janaína P dos; Wamser,Anderson Fernando; Suzuki,Atsuo; Marcuzzo,Leandro Luiz.
An alert system for tomato late blight was validated in an Integrated Production System (IP) in the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 season in Caçador, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The late blight is a destructive disease and demands 25 or more fungicide sprayings per season in a Conventional Production (CP) System. For the CP area, the chemical control was according to the growers' production systems and consisted of weekly sprays soon after planting. For the IP area, the criterion for the first fungicide spray was according to Machardy (1972) and for subsequent ones according to Wallin (1962), when the disease severity values (DSV) reached eight points. There was a decrease on the fungicide application in the IP, not only in the number of fungicide sprays...

Cost-effectiveness of integrated pest management compared with insecticidal spraying against the German cockroach in apartment buildings Neotropical Entomology
Shahraki,Gh; Hafidzi,MN; Khadri,MS; Rafinejad,J; Ibrahim,YB.
This study assessed the cost and effectiveness of an integrated pest management (IPM) program using hydramethylnon gel baits compared with conventional spraying for controlling the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Blattellidae), in two residential buildings in Yasuj, Iran. The IPM approach was based on educational programs using pamphlets, posters and lectures, sanitation using vacuuming and application of hydramethylnon gel baits. Conventional approach used cypermethrin (10% EC) on baseboard and cracks-and-crevices. Sticky traps were used as tools for monitoring cockroach population densities. The IPM approach reduced (943%) the rate of insecticide application compared to the conventional spray. Cockroach populations in the IPM...

Selection of Trichogramma species as potential natural enemies for the control of Opogona sacchari (Bojer) Scientia Agricola
Carli,Mayara de; Coelho Júnior,Aloisio; Milanez,José Maria; Nardi,Cristiane; Parra,José Roberto Postali.
ABSTRACT: The banana moth Opogona sacchari (Bojer) (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) is a polyphagous pest that can cause serious damage, especially to banana crops in southern Brazil. It attacks the fruit, lowering its quality and making bananas unsuitable for export. Current control measures are limited and the use of Trichogramma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) for Applied Biological Control may be an alternative for the management of this pest. In this study, we investigated the potential parasitism effectiveness of eggs of O. sacchari by T. pretiosum, T. atopovirilia and T. galloi, three species of parasitoids commonly used in Applied Biological Control programs in Brazil. Eggs of O. sacchari were parasitized by all three Trichogramma species, and T....
