The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is a mollusk bivalve commercially important as a food source. Pacific oysters are subjected to stress and diseases during culture. The autophagy pathway is involved in numerous cellular processes, including responses to starvation, cell death, and microorganism elimination. Autophagy also exists in C. gigas, and plays a role in the immune response against infections. Although this process is well-documented and conserved in most animals, it is still poorly understood in mollusks. To date, no study has provided a complete overview of the molecular mechanism of autophagy in mollusk bivalves. In this study, human and yeast ATG protein sequences and public databases (Uniprot and NCBI) were used to identify protein members... |

Ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, has been detected in the thymus of multiple vertebrates. However, little is known about its distribution in the thymus of the African ostrich. In this study, we evaluated the distribution and morphological characteristics of ghrelin-producing cells in the thymus of the African ostrich. Our results revealed that the thymus consists of a capsule and a parenchyma, which comprises the cortex and medulla. Compared to the cortex, the medulla had a fewer number of thymocytes and a greater number of epithelial cells. Additionally, three thymic corpuscles were identified. Ghrelin-immunopositive (ghrelin-ip) cells were detected both in the cortex and medulla of the African ostrich thymus,... |

The aim of this comparative observational study was to compare the proliferative activity of dental follicles surrounding impacted maxillary canines and mandibular third molars. Following extraction, forty follicles of the impacted mandibular third molars and 40 follicles of the impacted maxillary canines were removed. Epithelial cell proliferative activity of these samples was assessed using immunohistochemical labeling for Ki-67, minichromosome maintenance 2 (MCM-2) protein and epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR). Intensity and extent of Ki-67, MCM-2 and EGFR expressions were evaluated by a scoring formula. The lining epithelium of the maxillary canine follicles had mean scores of 4.65±0.27 for Ki-67, 1.25±0.33 for MCM-2 and 7.30±0.23 for EGFR which... |

p53 alterations have been implicated in oral carcinogenesis process. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity, the tongue being the most frequent affected site. The aim of this study was to compare p53 immunoexpression in 43 samples of oral SCC from 5 different anatomical sites: tongue, floor of the mouth, alveolar ridge/gingiva, retromolar region and other regions of the oral cavity. Thirty-three lesions (76,8%) showed positivity for p53 (mean index of 48,37%). No statistically significant differences were found between p53 expression and the different oral sites analyzed. Similarly, no differences were found when comparing tongue lesions with the remaining sites. These results suggest that it might not exist any difference... |

Carbohydrates play a critical role in many cellular processes like disease, growth and development. In this work lectins, proteins that recognizes carbohydrate free or conjugated, were used as histochemical probes for carbohydrates localization in developing human minor salivary gland. Immunohistochemistry for traditional cytoskeleton markers (Cks 7, 8, 13, 14, 19, SMA and Vimentin) was performed and then compared whit lectin histochemistry for PNA, WGA, ConA and UEA-I, specifics for D-galactose, N-acetyl-glucosamine, glucose/mannose and L-fucose respectively. For this, specimens were obtained from tongues and lips of 15 human foetuses at 10-28 weeks of gestation. None of immune cytoskeleton markers were identified in the first stage of development... |

Fourteen vomeronasal organs (VNOs) of adult males one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) and Egyptian water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) (n=7/each) were examined immunohistochemically with neuronal markers; synaptophysin (SYP) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) to clarify the distribution of the vomeronasal (VN) receptor cells and nerve fibers, in addition to elucidate the existence of non-neuronal elements via S-100 and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). In both animals, the VNO was lined medially with VN sensory (olfactory) epithelium and non-sensory (respiratory) epithelium laterally. Immunohistochemically, both animals showed SYP immunolabeling only in the receptor cells of VN sensory epithelium while GFAP labeled the ensheathing cells... |

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in the regulation of biological events such as the development of cell migration, proliferation and differentiation. Chronic sun exposure causes changes present in the ECM of actinic cheilitis (AC), a premalignant lesion of the lower lip which helps to understand the carcinogenesis of the lip. This study aimed to investigate elastin, the main component of solar elastosis alternating current in an attempt to establish the relationship between this protein and ECM in epithelial dysplasia. Paraffin embedded tissue sections of the lesions of 35 cases of AC were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for elastin, and became the association with the degree of epithelial dysplasia and age. Highest scores of elastin... |

The role of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP-s) in the development of the nervous system has been widely studied on avian and rodent embryos. Human embryos have rarely been available for detection of BMP expression. In this study 39 human embryos of Carnegie stages (CS) 10-20 were investigated. The embryos were fixed in paraformaldehyde, embedded in paraffin and sectioned serially in transverse direction. BMP-2 and BMP-4 protein expression in the developing neural tube and the caudal spinal cord was determined by immunohistochemistry. Our data show that BMP-s tend to be more expressed in the neural tube in earlier stages; in particular, BMP-4 staining was found to be higher at CS10 compared to CS20. More detailed analysis was performed on embryos of... |

Spermatogenesis is associated with considerable fluid secretion or absorption in the male reproductive tract. Aquaporins (AQPs) are membrane protein channels that allow the rapid movement of water through epithelium. In the present study, immunohistochemistry was utilized to localize the expression of AQP 1, AQP2 in the testis and prostate of adult bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus). Results show that AQP1 have intense reaction in rete testis, efferent ducts, vessels, seminiferous duct and in the prostate, AQP2 was found minor expression in the rete testis, vessels and prostate, which suggesting that AQP1 may have the main role in the absorption of the large amount of testicular fluid in male camel reproductive tract. Investigations of AQPs biology in... |
