Gains from Trade Liberalization with Imperfectly Competitive World Markets. A Note. AgEcon
Anania, Giovanni.
The paper shows how analyses assuming perfect competition can yield a distorted estimation of the expected effects of a trade liberalization when market imperfections exist. The analytical framework adopted is very simple and three extreme imperfect market structures are considered. In the first case, the exporting country maximizes its producer and consumer surplus by intervening in the world market. The second market imperfection considered is the existence of a private firm playing the role of "pure middleman" in the world market. Then the case of a producer-owned marketing board which is granted exclusive export authority is addressed. It is shown that under all three scenarios, if perfect competition is assumed when market imperfections exist, the...

The Transmission of Exchange Rate Changes to Agricultural Prices AgEcon
Liefert, William M.; Persuad, Suresh.
Movements in countries’ exchange rates can substantially change the prices of goods faced by producers and consumers and thereby affect incentives to produce, consume, and trade goods. Exchange rate changes, however, might not be completely transmitted (passed through) to domestic prices. Empirical evidence shows that price and exchange rate transmission for agricultural products is low in most developing economies, partly because of trade policies but also because of inadequate infrastructure and other market deficiencies. During the last 20 years, developed and developing countries generally have moved away from support policies that impede price and exchange rate transmission toward trade policies that allow transmission, such as tariffs. The Uruguay...

Az élelmiszer-biztonság szabályozásának közgazdasági vetületei AgEcon
Podruzsik, Szilard; Kasza, Gyula.
Az élelmiszer-biztonság olyan speciális terület, ahol a kiadások hasznosulását a jellemző kockázatok előfordulási gyakoriságain és ezek okozott hatásain lehet mérni, azonban a hatások – különösen azok egy részének látens jellege miatt – rendkívül nehezen becsülhetők. A látens rész pontosabb meghatározásához fogyasztói elemzések szükségesek. Az élelmiszer-biztonság gazdasági vetületének vizsgálatánál a jóléti közgazdaságtan és a humántőke-modell játszhat szerepet. Ezek közül a nemzetközi gyakorlat a könnyebb kvantifikálhatóság miatt elsősorban a humántőkemodellt alkalmazza. Az élelmiszer-biztonsági okokra visszavezethető megbetegedések gazdasági hatásait a háztartások, a vállalatok és az állam (ezen belül is kiemelten az ellátórendszerek) szintjén indokolt...
