A TIME-SERIES ANALYSIS OF THE U.S. DURUM WHEAT AND PASTA MARKETS AgEcon
Babula, Ronald A.; Rich, Karl M..
A quarterly, partial-equilibrium vector-autoregression model of the U.S. durum wheat and pasta markets was estimated and simulated under three trade-barrier changes that are of potential relevance for the current round of WTO agricultural negotiations: a rise in the U.S. market-clearing durum wheat quantity from increased imports; a policy- or tariff- reduction-induced decline in U.S. durum wheat price; and a tariff-induced rise in U.S. pasta product prices. In response to each shock, an array of quarterly dynamic response characteristics are examined: response reaction times, direction and pattern of quarterly responses, response durations, response multipliers, and strength of durum/pasta market interrelationships.

Value added of Cluster Membership for Micro Enterprises of the Handloom Sector in Ethiopia AgEcon
Ali, Merima; Peerlings, Jack H.M..
By contrasting the performance of clustered micro enterprises with that of dispersed ones in the handloom sector in Ethiopia, this study shows that clustering significantly increases profit. To correct for selection bias, we match clustered and dispersed micro enterprises that share similar observable characteristics except for being clustered both in urban and rural areas. Results show that clustering is more profitable in urban than rural areas. It is also found that regional specific factors determining clustering of micro enterprises are different in urban and rural areas, highlighting the need to focus on local circumstances when formulating policies to promote clusters.

MARKET IMPERFECTIONS AND CLASS STRUCTURE: THE CASE OF SOUTH AFRICA AgEcon
Lovo, Stefania.
Land and market imperfections shape the organization of agricultural production and lead to different production regimes within rural farm households in South Africa. This paper presents a theoretical model to explain the presence of three main households groups (classes) determined on the basis of the labor regime adopted: small peasants (working both on and off farm), self cultivators (autarkic in labor) and hiring in households. Membership in the three categories is determined by the endogenous shadow wage and the effective market wages. A generalized ordered logit model is used to test the main predictions of the model. Market imperfections, which prevent household from accessing markets, are expected to have different impacts on heterogenous...

MUDANÇA INSTITUCIONAL E O IMPACTO NO PADRÃO TECNOLÓGICO: O CASO DA MECANIZAÇÃO DA COLHEITA DE CANA-DE-AÇÚCAR NO PARANÁ AgEcon
Junqueira, Clarissa Pereira; Sterchile, Shirla Patricia Weber; Shikida, Pery Francisco Assis.
Due to changes in the institutional environment, mainly the Law 11.241/2002 (SP), which limits the burning of sugarcane and favors the mechanization of its harvest, there is a new technological pattern in the Brazilian production of sugar and alcohol. The objective of this article is to analyze the reasons behind the adoption of the mechanized harvest in the sugar and alcohol sector of Paraná state through field research (interviews and questionnaires applied during the second semester of 2007). The results show that the mechanization of the sugar cane harvest in Paraná was due to market pressures, allied to other factors: scarce labor in the state, environmental and market pressures, change of the technological standards and costs imputed by São Paulo...

Auswirkungen des Transformationsprozesses auf die sozioökonomischen Funktionen ukrainischer Landwirtschaftsunternehmen. AgEcon
Biesold, Helga.
In the planned Soviet economy, agricultural enterprises in Ukraine played a significant role in maintaining social infrastructure in rural areas. The state insisted that these enterprises provide medical care, transport infrastructure, kindergartens, schools and housing, as well as food supplies. Over the course of transition, the economic and political conditions of agricultural enterprises has drastically changed. The state greatly reduced financing for rural social infrastructure. Additionally, agricultural production significantly fell. As a result, the agricultural enterprises partially cut their support of social infrastructure in the rural areas, and in some cases, even completely depleted it. At the same time, the living conditions of the rural...

Dynamics in Inter-Firm Collaboration: The Impact of Alliance Capabilities on Performance AgEcon
Ziggers, Gerrit Willem; Den Ouden, Brian.
In this study we question the direct relationship between alliance capability and alliance performance. We contend that this relationship is mediated through post-formation factors such as alliance management and relational quality. Drawing from the Resource Based View a model is presented that explicates these indirect relationships. Partial least squares analysis was used to test three hypotheses, using a sample of Dutch alliance managers responsible for non-equity alliances in agribusiness and the food industry. Our empirical findings affirm the hypothesized indirect relationships between alliance capabilities and alliance performance.

Wheat / Flour Price Transmission and Agricultural Policies in Ukraine: A Markov-Switching Vector Error Correction Approach AgEcon
Brümmer, Bernhard; Zorya, Sergiy.
The analysis of price transmission between raw and processed agricultural products in transition countries is complicated by the frequently changing conditions on their way from plan to market. We utilise a Markov-switching vector error correction model to allow for multiple regime shifts in the price relationship between wheat and wheat flour in Ukraine from June 2000 to November 2004. The analysis reveals four regimes. The observed temporal pattern of these regimes can be matched with certain political and economic events in Ukraine. In particular, we find a strong link between the 'high uncertainty' regime and discretionary policy interventions in 2003.

Analysis of Consumer Attitudes and Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Functional Foods AgEcon
Di Pasquale, Jorgelina; Adinolfi, Felice; Capitanio, Fabian.
The objective of this study is to analyze consumer behaviour in relation to functional foods by a direct survey. To this end, the proposal is an analysis of the reasons for choosing to consume this type of food or not, accompanied by a supplementary investigation, mostly to assess the relationship between consumption patterns and willingness to pay (WTP) for the most common categories of functional foods, such as milk fortified with CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Our research shows that a proportion of the population is unaware of the existence of functional foods and their properties. Moreover, it shows that when the concept of functional foods is explained to consumers, this creates a greater willingness to pay for such food, which is strongly linked to...

Mobilização de Recursos e Competitividade no Mercado de Vinhos Finos: uma análise da vitivinicultura de São Joaquim, SC AgEcon
Blume, Roni; Hoff, Debora Nayar; Pedrozo, Eugenio Avila.
The new tendencies of the fine wine global consumer market have challenged organizations to observe their resources more efficiently in order to better structure and organize their strategies towards greater competitiveness and sustainability. Based on the Competitiveness and Resource-Based View approach, together with a study of certain market patterns and tendencies, this work aimed to evaluate how certain categories of resources are being managed in an attempt to promote the competitiveness of the fine wines from São Joaquim, a recent and little studied producing region in Santa Catarina state. An exploratory-descriptive study was done to assist experts involved in the São Joaquim vitiviniculture sector. It was possible to observe that image conception...

Why weak patents? Rational ignorance or pro-"customer" Tilt? AgEcon
Lei, Zhen; Wright, Brian D..
The issuance of weak patents is widely viewed as a fundamental problem in the current US patent system. Reasons that have been offered for the granting of weak patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) include examiners’ “rational ignorance” of the patentability of applications and pro-“customer” rules and institutions that create incentives for examiners to grant patents of dubious validity to their “customers”- applicants. In this paper, we study whether US examiners’ behavior in prior art search betrays their assessment of applications’ patentability. For a sample of US patents for which applications were also filed at the European Patent Office (EPO), we construct a measure of the fraction of prior art that is missed by US examiners. We...

BUREAUCRATIC CORRUPTION AND MASS MEDIA AgEcon
Suphachalasai, Suphachol.
This paper investigates the relationship between a bureaucracy and mass media industry, and its implications to corruption. We develop a bureaucratic model of corruption with mass media. A representative profit maximizing media firm seeks for corruption news to be printed and sold. Channels through which competition in media industry and press freedom affect equilibrium corruption in a bureaucracy are modeled. Different degrees of media freedom and competition affect production and employment decisions of media firms, and this in turn affects the effectiveness of media in monitoring corruption. Competition and freedom in media sector also have an influence on bureaucratic structure and consequently on equilibrium corruption. We find that the degree of...

The Evolution of Quantitative Food Marketing Policy: A Public Perspective AgEcon
Cotterill, Ronald W..
Quantitative analysis of food marketing policy has played a critical role in the evolution of empirical industrial organization and antitrust enforcement over the past 40 years. This article highlights the contributions of the author and other agricultural economists. The second half of this article explains why an economist might want to do, or perhaps avoid, public policy work. It gives several examples from antitrust cases where economic policy analysis is a front-line contact sport.

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A CASE STUDY OF ISSUES FOR BIOAG AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J.; Akridge, Jay T..
Supply chain management has become an increasingly important topic to agribusiness managers during the past five years. Drivers of this trend include buyers seeking higher levels of customer service and efforts by firms to control costs, especially inventory. This case introduces the reader to supply chain management. It would work well either as part of a capstone course, in a special topics course, or in an executive education course. The case explores some of the issues and dilemmas associated with supply chain management efforts at BioAg, a small Midwestern firm that manufacturers agricultural chemicals that are environmentally sensitive.

Testing a Performance Measurement Framework for Agri-Food Supply Chains AgEcon
Aramyan, Lusine H.; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; van Kooten, Olaf.
Measurement of entire supply chain performance is an important issue, because it allows for "tracking and tracing" of efficacy and efficiency failures and leads to more informed decision-making with regards to chain organization. The ultimate aim of implementing a performance measurement system is to improve the performance of the organization. If supply chains can get their performance measurement right, the data they generate will tell them where they are, how they are doing, and where they are going. The choice of appropriate supply chain performance indicators is rather complicated due to presence of multiple inputs and multiple outputs in the system. This issue becomes even more problematic in the field of food and agribusiness due to specific...

Bio-fuel Chains – An Overview on the Structure and the Value Chain Organization AgEcon
Dautzenberg, Kirsti; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
Structural change in the agricultural sector as well as in the whole agricultural value chain is an ongoing dynamic process and creates a number of diverse phenomena. The EU Strategy for Biofuels (2006) and the Biomass action plan (2005) set a clear signal that the EU wishes to establish and to support the bio energy-industry. The perceivable aim of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) consists in reducing food production and in enlarging the non-food production. Another driver for the attractiveness of bio-energy and bio-fuel production is the recent development of prices of crude oil and natural gas. Furthermore bio-energy is seen as one of the key options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and substitute fossil fuels.
