Can Offshore Wind Energy Be a Lever for Job Creation in France? Some Insights from a Local Case Study ArchiMer
Kahouli, Sondes; Martin, Jean Christophe.
The French government has launched three separate calls for tender in July 2011, March 2013, and December 2016 to install 3.5 GW of offshore wind. In addition to contributing to the fulfillment of environmental commitments, the deployment of offshore wind energy is expected to be a lever for economic development. To assess gross economic impacts, mainly in terms of job creation, we built a regional input-output model of the wind farm off Saint-Brieuc located in the region of Brittany, north-western France. Our model indicates that the project will have positive effects on Brittany’s economy. In particular, during the investment phase, the wind farm is expected to lead to €0.38 M/year/MW of added value and 6.03 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs/year/MW....

The Relative Importance of the Green Industry in the U.S. Agricultural Economy AgEcon
Turner, Steven C.; Kriesel, Warren.
This article describes the relative size of the green industry within the U.S. economy and how it is linked to supporting industries through the volume of transactions and economic impact multipliers. This analysis was based on IMPLAN, an input-output model developed by the U.S. Forest Service. In terms of 1990 employment, the green industry was the second leading employer in United States production agriculture. In terms of output, the greenhouse and products sector ranked sixth within production agriculture, behind cattle, other livestock, grains, other crops and oil bearing crops.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE DESERT ECONOMY: RISKS AND STRATEGIES FOR LONG-TERM SUSTAINABLE GROWTH AgEcon
Rola-Rubzen, Maria Fay; McGregor, Murray J..
The Australian desert economy is a $90 billion dollar economy. However currently, there is a reliance on a few industry sectors in delivering its output. About 60% of the gross revenue of the desert comes from only three sectors - mining, manufacturing and agriculture. This can pose a risk in light of climate change, increasing interconnectedness of financial markets and the fact that the resources boom is unlikely to be an on-going phenomenon. How can desert economies mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a few select sectors and ensure continued growth in the long run? This paper discusses the structure of the desert economy and strategies to mitigate the risks of overdependence on a few industries. Using a regional input-output model, the...

THE OPERATION OF THE HUNGARIAN BROILER PRODUCT CHAIN AgEcon
Szollosi, Laszlo.
The general objective of this paper is to present the inner connections of the broiler product chain and the process of value generation in the economic situation of 2007. I introduce the input-output model of the broiler product chain adapted from macro-economic analysis, in which I calculated the direct connections of the product chain phases and between the national economic branches outside the chain. Then I point to the disproportion of the product chain through the profit distribution. Moreover, to evaluate the process of the value generation I demonstrate the value added generated along the value chain (year 2007). On the basis of the results 825 EUR of value added is realized to one ton of ready product (chicken meat), from which the major portion...

Regional Agricultural Input-Output Model and Countermeasure for Production and Income Increase of Farmers in Southern Xinjiang, China AgEcon
Jiang, Qing-song; Zhang, Xing-ji.
Agricultural input and output status in southern Xinjiang, China is introduced, such as lack of agricultural input, low level of agricultural modernization, excessive fertilizer use, serious damage of environment, shortage of water resources, tremendous pressure on ecological balance, insignificant economic and social benefits of agricultural production in southern Xinjiang, agriculture remaining a weak industry, agricultural economy as the economic subject of southern Xinjiang, and backward economic development of southern Xinjiang. Taking the Aksu area as an example, according to the input and output data in the years 2002-2007, input-output model about regional agriculture of the southern Xinjiang is established by principal component analysis. DPS...

The objective of this work is to analyze coffee production and processing in the economic structure of Minas Gerais, to determine its importance and its linkages to the structure of the State economy, by using input-output matrix. Therefore, it is determined linkages indexes of Rasmussen-Hirschman, boarding fields, pure linkage index (GHS) and regional multipliers of product, income and employment. These applications are complementary to the identification of key sectors of the economy. The 1995 input-output matrix was used. Linkages indexes of Rasmussen-Hirschman and the analysis of the influence field pointed out that coffee production presents multiplying indicators above those of the economy, presenting higher backward and forward linkages. The coffee...

Changing Consumer Food Prices: A User's Guide to ERS Analyses AgEcon
Reed, Albert J.; Hanson, Kenneth; Elitzak, Howard; Schluter, Gerald E..
USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) uses different economic models to estimate the impact of higher input prices on consumer food prices. The present study compares three ERS models. In the first two models, neither consumers nor food producers respond to market prices. We refer to these two models as short-run models. In the third model, both consumers and food producers respond to changing prices, and we refer to this model as a long-run model. Given published parameter estimates, we simulate the impact of a higher energy price on consumer food prices, and our empirical findings are consistent with our understanding of market responses. In the short run, we find that the full effect of an increase in the price of energy is fully (or nearly fully)...

Estimating North Dakota's Economic Base AgEcon
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
North Dakota’s economic base is comprised of those activities producing a product paid for by nonresidents, or products exported from the state. North Dakota’s economic base activities include agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism, and federal government payments for construction and to individuals. Development of the North Dakota economic base data is important because it provides the information to quantify the state’s economic growth, and it creates the final demand sectors for the North Dakota Input-Output Model. This report provides a brief description of the methodology used to estimate each individual sector and the associated data sources. Sales for final demand have been estimated for the 1958-2007 period. Personal income generated by the...

Adding an Exported Services Component to the North Dakota Input-Output Model's Business and Personal Services Sector AgEcon
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The North Dakota Input-Output model has been used extensively to analyze changes in the state's economy. Within the past decade, exported services (e.g., telemarketing, data processing, reservation and financial centers) have become an important component of the North Dakota economic base. The purpose of this report is to estimate the contribution of exported services firms to the economic base (sales for final demand) of North Dakota and of regions and counties within the state, for 1998 and 1999. Exported services sales for final demand in 1999 totaled $348 million statewide, or almost 3 percent of the state's economic base. Regions 5, 2, and 7 had the largest contributions from exported services activities, which amounted to 6 percent of total sales...
