KÉNYSZERŰ ÉRTÉKVESZTÉS A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI TERMÉKEK PIACÁN AgEcon
Varga, Tibor.
Witnessing the long-standing resource insufficiency in Hungarian agriculture, the question arises: aside from obviously low efficiencies, to what extent have unfavorable prices led to this situation. In my presentation I will try to answer the question whether, assuming some kind of value-categories or other as given and measured against this, the permanent erosion of agricultural prices can be established. If so, could declining prices be connected to specific features of the agricultural sector? These answers may be useful for experts in make arrangements for decisions of agricultural policy. Research on micro-economic principles, shows that for an analysis of the value-distortion of our prices the equilibrium prices of the so-called “Walras market” (a...

ASYMMETRIC PRICE TRANSMISSION IN THE ISRAELI CITRUS EXPORT SECTOR IN THE AFTERMATH OF LIBERALIZATION AgEcon
Goetz, Linde; von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephan.
The Israeli citrus export sector was liberalized in 1991 with the aim to increase citrus growers’ income and to improve overall efficiency of the international citrus marketing channel. However, the former government export monopoly’s activities were mainly taken over by four large companies accounting for over 90% of total Israeli citrus market exports. In addition, citrus exporters maintained the monopoly’s consignment system, substantially limiting transparency on how the grower price is determined. This lead the government to intervene in the newly liberalized market by implementing a minimum price agreement in the 1994/95 season to protect citrus growers against exporters’ abuse of market power. In this paper we analyze whether market power was...

Price Linkage between International Price of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) and Cooking Oil Price in Indonesia AgEcon
Rifin, Amzul.
Cooking oil in Indonesia is considered to be one of the staple food of Indonesian people. In the beginning of 2008, the price of cooking oil in Indonesia has increased significantly. One of the reasons is the increase of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) price in the international market. The objective of this research is to investigate the impacts of international price of CPO on the domestic price of CPO and cooking oil. Three specific objectives are included (1) To test whether international price of CPO and domestic price of CPO and cooking oil are related through cointegration tests, (2) To test the causal relationships between international price of CPO and domestic price of CPO and cooking oil and (3) To analyze how domestic price of CPO and cooking oil food...

Foreign Direct Investment and Pollution Havens: Evaluating the Evidence from China AgEcon
Dean, Judith M.; Lovely, Mary E.; Wang, Hua.
One of the most contentious debates today is whether pollution-intensive industries seek locations with weak environmental standards, turning these locations into 'pollution havens." Empirical studies to date show little evidence to support the pollution haven hypothesis, but suffer potentially from omitted variable bias, specification, and measurement errors. This paper estimates the strength of pollution-haven behavior by examining the location choices of equity joint venture (EJV) projects in China. We derive a location choice model from a theoretical framework that incorporates the firm's production and abatement decision, agglomeration and factor abundance. We estimate conditional logit and nested multinomial logit models using new data sets...

A JOINT TEST OF PRICING-TO-MARKET, MENU COST AND CURRENCY INVOICING AgEcon
Gervais, Jean-Philippe; Larue, Bruno.
This paper investigates PTM behaviour and currency invoicing decisions of Canadian pork exporters in the presence of menu costs. It is shown that when export prices are negotiated in the exporter'’s currency, menu costs cause threshold effects in the sense that there are bounds within (outside of) which PTM is not (is) observed. Conversely, PTM is not interrupted by menu costs when export prices are denominated in the importer'’s currency. The empirical model focuses on pork meat exports from Canada to the U.S. and Japan. Hansen’'s (2000) threshold estimation procedure is used to jointly test for currency invoicing and PTM in the presence of menu costs. Inference is conducted using bootstrap methods. PTM effects are smaller when accounting for currency...

Food Safety in Agricultural International Trade: The Spanish experience in Mediterranean products AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Garca, Marian.
Food international trade between developed and developing countries is increasing as a consequence of the worldwide liberalization movement. Tariffs and technical barriers are decreasing and many exporters in developing countries are ready to supply to developed markets. However there are non-tariff barriers, some of them related to food safety. The goal of this paper is to analyse how some food safety and quality control measures may be overcome by Less Developed Countries following some indications, such as a benchmarking analysis. The identification of “best practice” in operating firms may be useful to others. We describe the evolution of international trade, the situation at destination and origin markets through the international channel. It is...

"GREEN BOX" MEASURES FOR AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT: HOW DECOUPLED CAN THEY REALLY BE? AN INVESTIGATION WITHIN SAM AND CGE FRAMEWORKS AgEcon
Sayan, Serdar; Tin, Ela.
The Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture classified some subsidies as "Green Box" measures and presuming that they would not distort production/trade patterns, kept them outside the AMS reduction commitments. This study investigates the validity of this view through simulation results from SAM multiplier and CGE analyses for the US economy.

Protektion passe? AgEcon
Hasse, Rolf H..

Analyzing the Impacts of the Proposed North American Free Trade Agreement on European-North American Dairy Trade Using a Joint-Input, Multi-Product Approach AgEcon
Bishop, Phillip M.; Pratt, James E.; Novakovic, Andrew M..
Mathematical programming models, as typically formulated for international trade applications, may contain certain implied restrictions limiting price responsiveness, intermediate product flows, and arbitrage possibilities. These restrictions are especially important in the case of dairy, and may lead to results which are technically infeasible, or if feasible, not consistent with market equilibrating behavior. The difficulties encountered when modeling dairy trade are described, and an alternative formulation of a spatial model is presented. This formulation allows joint-inputs, multi-products, intermediate markets, and pure transshipment and product substitution forms of arbitrage.

ADDITIONALITY OF CREDIT GUARANTEES FOR U.S. WHEAT EXPORTS AgEcon
Diersen, Matthew A.; Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L.; Satyanarayana, Vidyashankara.
The value of credit guarantee programs has recently been called into question. Credit guarantees are important marketing tools in the world wheat market, both to develop new markets and to compete in existing markets. This study examines the additionality of export credit guarantees. Empirical demand models were developed and estimated using pooled data among importing countries. Models were estimated for each of the principal exporting countries providing export credit guarantees: the United States, Canada and France. Additionality of credit guarantees were also contrasted to the Export Enhancement Program. Positive additionality was found for CCC guarantees, indicating that the GSM programs have resulted in additional exports that would not have...
