The first cases of gynandromorphism in oil-collecting bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae: Centridini, Tapinotaspidini) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Alvarez,Leopoldo Jesús; Silva,Wagner Pereira; Lucia,Mariano; Aguiar,Antonio J.C..
Abstract Here we provide descriptions of gynandromorphs of two species oil-collecting bees: Lophopedia nigrispinis and Epicharis iheringii, both with partial bilateral phenotypic asymmetry. The bees have a female phenotype predominantly on mesosoma and metasoma. The specimen of L. nigrispinis has distinct characteristics on legs, suggesting a mosaic pattern of gynandromorphism. The pollen and oil loads on legs suggest that the bee was foraging normally. The gynander specimen of E. iheringii has mostly a female phenotype, except for head, with right half female type and left half male type. The specimen of L. nigrispinis was collected foraging on flowers of Bidens sp. at Parque Nacional Iguazú, Argentina with loads of pollen on legs suggesting it was...

Reproductive behavior of intertidal hermit crabs (Decapoda, Anomura) in southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Turra,Alexander.
The reproductive behavior of four intertidal hermit crab species [Clibanarius antillensis Stimpson, 1859, C. sclopetarius (Herbst, 1796), C. vittatus (Bosc, 1802), and Pagurus criniticornis (Dana, 1852)] was studied in São Sebastião Channel, southeastern Brazil. The overall behavior followed previous descriptions for Diogenid and Pagurid hermit crabs but some particular differences were recorded. Male to male agonistic encounters over females and guarding behavior were more common to C. sclopetarius, C. vittatus, and Pagurus criniticornis. During guarding, males clearly grasped females' chelipeds, eyestalks, and the margins of their shell apertures. This oblique guarding and, simultaneously, accessing behavior (OGAP) has never been described for hermit...

Sexual dimorphism and morphometric characterization of Centris tarsata Smith, 1874, Hymenoptera: Apidae in different environments Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Vieira Souza,Adriane; Andrade Nunes,Lorena; Machado,Cerilene Santiago; da Silva Sodré,Geni; Lopes de Carvalho,Carlos Alfredo.
Abstract Solitary bees Apidae: Centridini are important pollinators of Malpighia emarginata DC. Malpighiales: Malpighiaceae. However, there are few studies on the characterization of populations of this species in areas with orchards and their surroundings. This study analyzed the morphometric variability and sexual dimorphism of Centris tarsata Smith, sampled in artificial nests installed at four different vegetation types. The right forewings of 168 individuals were dissected, photographed, and the images processed in TpsUtil and brought to the TpsDig2 version 2.12 for plotting 18 landmarks by geometric morphometrics. Data were analyzed through Principal Components Analysis PCA, Canonical Variables CV, and cross-validation in order to test the correct...

Sex control in fish is a promising technique for aquaculture, since it gives advantages associated with one sex. The aim of this study was to investigate the feminization of common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) by oral administration of two doses of estradiol-17β (50 and 100 mg E2 kg-1 feed) and control treatment for 45 days and to evaluate their effects on the sex ratio, growth and survival of common snook juveniles. After this period, fish were fed only with commercial feed without hormone supplementation. During the period of E2 administration, the control fish grew more than those in the other treatments. At the end of the experiment in the treatment with 50 mg E2 kg-1, 26.32% of the fish were male, 68.42% were female, and 5.26% were intersex. In the...
