Effects of topical levobunolol or fixed combination of dorzolamide-timolol or association of dorzolamide-levobunolol on intraocular pressure, pupil size, and heart rate in healthy cats Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ribeiro,A.P.; Junior,D.P.; Champion,T.; Brunetto,M.A.; Camacho,A.A.; Laus,J.L..
The effects of topical levobunolol with the fixed combination of 2% dorzolamide-0.5% timolol and the association of 2% dorzolamide with 0.5% levobunolol on intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil size (PS), heart rate (HR), and conjunctival hyperemia in eighteen halthy cats were investigated and compared. IOP, PS, HR, and conjuntival hyperemia were daily recorded at three times (9a.m., 2p.m., and 6p.m.). Three groups were formed (n=6), and one eye of each animal was randomly selected and treated with topical levobunolol (L), or commercial combination of dorzolamide-timolol (DT), or the association of dorzolamide with levobunolol (DL). The first day (0) consisted of recording of baseline values. On the next four consecutive days, drugs were instilled at 8a.m. and...

Modified extracapsular extraction versus endocapsular phacoemulsification: intraoperative and immediate postoperative events Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Honsho,C.S.; Oriá,A.P.; Pigatto,J.A.T.; Laus,J.L..
The clinical events and variations in intraocular pressure (IOP) that occur in endocapsular phacoemulsification technique were compared to the modified extracapsular extraction technique during the intraoperative and immediate postoperative periods. Phacoemulsification technique caused less corneal edema, less ocular discomfort and fewer postoperative complications than the modified extracapsular extraction technique. The observed increase in postoperative IOP, especially in the case of phacoemulsification, makes pressure monitoring mandatory, as well as the use of ocular hypotensive agents when the IOP exceeds acceptable limits.

Intraocular pressure and its correlation with blood gas parameters in crested caracaras (Caracara plancus) anesthetized with isoflurane and sevoflurane Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ribeiro,A.P.; Vitaliano,S.N.; Thiesen,R.; Escobar,A.; Duque Ortiz,J.P.; Belmonte,E.A.; Werther,K.; Laus,J.L..
The intraocular pressure (IOP) and its correlations with arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaCO2) and arterial pH were studied in five crested caracaras (Caracara plancus) anesthetized with isoflurane (ISO) and sevoflurane (SEV). Baseline IOP values were measured in both eyes (M0). Brachial artery was previously catheterized to obtain blood gas and cardiorespiratory analysis. Anesthesia was induced with 5% ISO and maintained with 2.5% for 40 minutes. IOP measurements and blood samples were evaluated in different moments until the end of the procedure. After recovering, a second anesthesia was induced with 6% SEV and maintained with 3.5%. Parameters were evaluated at the same time points of the previous procedure. IOP reduced significantly (P=...

Effects of submaximal exercise with water ingestion on intraocular pressure in healthy human males BJMBR
Moura,M.A.; Rodrigues,L.O.C.; Waisberg,Y.; de Almeida,H.G.; Silami-Garcia,E..
The effects of exercise and water replacement on intraocular pressure (IOP) have not been well established. Furthermore, it is not known whether the temperature of the fluid ingested influences the IOP response. In the present study we determined the effect of water ingestion at three temperatures (10, 24 and 38ºC; 600 ml 15 min before and 240 ml 15, 30 and 45 min after the beginning of each experimental session) on the IOP of six healthy male volunteers (age = 24.0 ± 3.5 years, weight = 67.0 ± 4.8 kg, peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) = 47.8 ± 9.1 ml kg-1 min-1). The subjects exercised until exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at a 60% VO2peak in a thermoneutral environment. IOP was measured before and after exercise and during recovery (15, 30 and 45 min) using...

Trabeculectomy and optic nerve head topography BJMBR
Paranhos Jr.,A.; Lima,M.C.; Salim,S.; Caprioli,J.; Shields,M.B..
The objective of the present study was to evaluate changes in optic nerve head parameters, measured by confocal laser tomography, before and after trabeculectomy in order to identify outcome measures for the management of glaucoma. The optic nerve head of 22 eyes (22 patients) was analyzed by confocal laser tomography with the Heidelberg retinal tomogram (HRT) before and after trabeculectomy. The median time between the first HRT and surgery was 4.6 months (mean: 7.7 ± 8.3) and the median time between surgery and the second HRT was 10.8 months (mean: 12.0 ± 6.8). The patients were divided into two groups, i.e., those with the highest (group A) and lowest (group B) intraocular pressure (IOP) change after surgery. Differences in the 12 standard topographic...

Exercise training prevents increased intraocular pressure and sympathetic vascular modulation in an experimental model of metabolic syndrome BJMBR
Castro,E.F.S.; Mostarda,C.T.; Rodrigues,B.; Moraes-Silva,I.C.; Feriani,D.J.; De Angelis,K.; Irigoyen,M.C..
The present study aimed to study the effects of exercise training (ET) performed by rats on a 10-week high-fructose diet on metabolic, hemodynamic, and autonomic changes, as well as intraocular pressure (IOP). Male Wistar rats receiving fructose overload in drinking water (100 g/L) were concomitantly trained on a treadmill for 10 weeks (FT group) or kept sedentary (F group), and a control group (C) was kept in normal laboratory conditions. The metabolic evaluation comprised the Lee index, glycemia, and insulin tolerance test (KITT). Arterial pressure (AP) was measured directly, and systolic AP variability was performed to determine peripheral autonomic modulation. ET attenuated impaired metabolic parameters, AP, IOP, and ocular perfusion pressure (OPP)...

Avian ophthalmic peculiarities Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Clarissa Machado de; Rodarte-Almeida,Ana Carolina da Veiga; Santana,Marcelo Ismar Silva; Galera,Paula Diniz.
ABSTRACT: Morphology and physiology of bird eyes are similar to mammals; although, there are peculiarities that should be considered for a correct interpretation of an ophthalmic examination. While the ophthalmology of domestic species is already well established, there are gaps to be filled regarding birds, particularly due to the large number of existing species. This literature review consists of a brief contribution regarding peculiarities of anatomy, physiology, and ophthalmic semiotechnique of the avian eye.

Assessment of intraocular pressure in chinchillas of different age groups using rebound tonometry Ciência Rural
Chacaltana,Flor Diana Yokoay Claros; Pigatto,João Antonio Tadeu; Denardin,Ione Terezinha.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP) of normal chinchilla eyes using the rebound tonometer. A further aim was to assess whether there were differences in the values of intraocular pressure in relation to animals age, gender and time of day. Thirty-six chinchillas were divided into three groups of 12 chinchillas each, by age: Group I (2-6-month-old), Group II (20 and 34 months) and Group III (37 and 135 months). Ophthalmic examination was performed previously by Schirmer tear test, slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein test in all chinchillas. Three measurements of intraocular pressure were assessed on the same day (7, 12 and 19h). Tonometry was performed on both eyes using the rebound...

Bechara,Juliana Noda; Barros,Paulo Sérgio de Moraes; Fantoni,Denise Tabacchi; Cortopassi,Silvia Renata Gaido; Silva,Luis Claudio Lopes Correa da.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate an anesthetic association with and without the use of a nondepolarizing muscle relaxant agent and its effect on intraocular pressure of horses, and also obtain an anesthetic technique free of adverse effects for ophthalmic surgeries in this specie. Sixteen horses were randomly divided in two groups of eight horses each. In group I, horses were pre-medicated with romifidine, anesthesia induced with tiletamine/zolazepam and maintained with halothane and vecuronium. Horses of group II received the same anesthetic association except for vecuronium. Intraocular pressure, arterial pressure and heart rate were evaluated in different moments during the experiment. The anesthetic association composed by romifidine,...
