CHEMICAL CHANGES OF SOIL AND WATER IN HILLSIDE AREAS UNDER INTENSIVE HORTICULTURE REA
Silva,Laércio S.; Galindo,Izabel C. de L.; Gomes,Romário P.; Campos,Milton C. C.; Souza,Edivan R. de; Cunha,José M. da.
ABSTRACT Inadequate and intensive management of soils can promote changes in their chemical attributes and impair the quality of surface and groundwater, especially in hillside areas. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify possible changes in soil and water chemical composition of hillside areas cultivated with horticulture. For this, chemical attributes of three soil depths (0-10, 10-30, and 30-60 cm) were determined in three hillside positions (upper, middle, and lower thirds) of five hillside and adjacent forest areas, as well as water from reservoirs for agricultural use and human consumption. Compared with the forest area, horticultural areas present soil with lower organic matter content and CEC, but higher values of pH, base saturation,...

Irrigação de pequenas áreas. Infoteca-e
PINTO, J. M..

Taking a multiple-use approach to meeting the water needs of poor communities brings multiple benefits AgEcon
International Water Management Institute (IWMI); International Water and Sanitation Centre; Global Water Partnership (GWP).
This briefing was produced by International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, the Technical Committee of the Global Water Partnership (GWP) and the GWP Advisory Center at IWMI. It draws primarily on research from the Multiple Use Systems (MUS) project and the Productive Uses of Water Thematic Group (Prodwat) (see references for further reading). The brief complements Catalyzing Change, the GWP handbook for developing IWRM and water efficiency strategies and plans, and the associated policy and technical briefs. Single-use approaches to water development and management do not reflect the realities of poor people’s water use. People use domestic water supplies for activities such as irrigating backyard...

Groundwater pollution and emerging environmental challenges of industrial effluent irrigation in Mettupalayam Taluk, Tamil Nadu AgEcon
Mukherjee, Sacchidananda; Nelliyat, Prakash.
Industrial disposal of effluents on land and the subsequent pollution of groundwater and soil of surrounding farmlands – is a relatively new area of research. The environmental and socioeconomic aspects of industrial effluent irrigation have not been studied as extensively as domestic sewage based irrigation practices, at least for a developing country like India. The disposal of effluents on land has become a regular practice for some industries. Industries located in Mettupalayam Taluk, Tamil Nadu, dispose their effluents on land, and the farmers of the adjacent farmlands have complained that their shallow open wells get polluted and also the salt content of the soil has started building up slowly. This study attempts to capture the environmental and...

Planning groundwater use for sustainable rural development AgEcon
International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
Groundwater use is rapidly increasing in Sri Lanka, bringing several benefits to small farmers—by allowing them to grow more crops, minimize the impact of droughts, and profit from selling high-value produce. But how can this be sustained? Lessons learned from other countries with longer histories of groundwater use can help policymakers, planners, and development organizations avoid the pitfalls and dangers of indiscriminate use, and capture the benefits that groundwater can bring.

Evaluation of historic, current and future water demand in the Olifants River Catchment, South Africa AgEcon
McCartney, Matthew P.; Arranz, Roberto.
Water resource development has played a significant role in the expansion of agriculture and industry in the Olifants River Catchment. However, currently water deficit is one of the major constraints hampering development in the catchment; both the mining and agricultural sectors are producing below optimal levels because of their reliance on insufficient supplies. In this study, the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model was used to evaluate scenarios of historic, current and future water demand in the catchment. For each scenario, the WEAP model was used to simulate demand in five different sectors (rural, urban, mining, commercial forestry and irrigation) over a 70-year period of varying rainfall and hydrology. Levels of assured supply were...
