Agricultural costs for reducing nitrogen surpluses in the Weser river basin AgEcon
Heidecke, Claudia; Kreins, Peter.
Agriculture is to a large part responsible for nitrate leaching into groundwater and rivers in Germany, especially in highly intensive agricultural regions. To evaluate the link between nitrogen surpluses from agriculture and nutrient leaching into ground- and surface waters, a model network to analyse current and future nitrogen surplus developments and water quality is set up by connecting hydrological and hydrogeological models with the German agricultural sector model RAUMIS. A set of different environmental measures and their costs is selected to fulfil surface and groundwater targets of the European water framework directive (WFD) for the case of the Weser River basin. Results show that with additional agri-environmental measures covering around 1...

Credit Markets for Small Farms: Role for Institutional Innovations AgEcon
Pillarisetti, Satish; Mehrotra, Nirupam.
Indian agriculture is characterized by the predominance of smallholders. This paper seeks to examine the access of small holders to agriculture credit in the context of financial sector reforms in India in the nineties. It explores the role of institutional and non institutional agencies in extending agriculture credit to the smallholder and the ground realities as revealed by recent data sets. The nineties also saw the unfolding of the largest microfinance programme in the world in India. While this was very successful in bringing micro enterprises under the credit purview, it was unable to cater to the need for agriculture credit. This paper examines the reasons for this and suggests that newer kinds of institutional innovations in the Pilot stage like,...

Development, Diffusion and Impact of Conservation Farming in Zambia AgEcon
Haggblade, Steven; Tembo, Gelson.
The study reported in this paper measures differences in profitability between conservation farming (CF) practices and conventional agriculture by comparing the value of differential output with the differential input costs. The main objective is to address and fill several important knowledge gaps by investigating three key features of conservation farming in Zambia: 1) the process by which CF originated and spread; 2) the scale of CF adoption across household groups and regions; and 3) the impact of CF on crop output, input use, cost of production and farm income.

ALBANIAN LAND MARKET ACTION PLAN: PURPOSES, ACHIEVEMENTS, LESSONS AgEcon
Jazoj, Ahmet; Stanfield, J. David; Barry, Teresa.
The transition in Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States from command to market-oriented economies requires new land market institutions and policies. Once privatization of land has moved far enough to permit and stimulate demand for market transactions, the question becomes one of establishing dynamic land markets (i.e., a growing volume of transactions) that also "work properly." Concerning the transition in the ownership and management of real property and the resultant efforts to create new land market institutions, the experience of Albania is instructive, and this paper outlines the establishment of an Albanian land market strategy. In the discussion of a market-oriented economy in Albania, the question was how to create the land...

Zöldenergia, klíma, társadalom AgEcon
Gergely, Sandor; Magda, Sandor.

Determinants and Consequences of Land Sales Market Participation: Panel Evidence from India AgEcon
Deininger, Klaus W.; Jin, Songqing; Nagarajan, Hari K..
Although opinions on impacts of land market transfers are sharply divided, few studies explore the welfare- and productivity impact of land markets on a larger scale. We use a large Indian panel spanning almost 20 years, together with a climatic shock (rainfall) indicator, to assess the productivity- and equity-impact of market-mediated land transfers (sale and purchase) as compared to non-market ones (inheritance). While frequent shocks increase land market activity, an effect that is mitigated by presence of safety nets and banks- land sales markets improved productivity and helped purchasers, many of them formerly landless, to accumulate non-land assets and significantly enhance their welfare.

Auswirkungen des Transformationsprozesses auf die sozioökonomischen Funktionen ukrainischer Landwirtschaftsunternehmen. AgEcon
Biesold, Helga.
In the planned Soviet economy, agricultural enterprises in Ukraine played a significant role in maintaining social infrastructure in rural areas. The state insisted that these enterprises provide medical care, transport infrastructure, kindergartens, schools and housing, as well as food supplies. Over the course of transition, the economic and political conditions of agricultural enterprises has drastically changed. The state greatly reduced financing for rural social infrastructure. Additionally, agricultural production significantly fell. As a result, the agricultural enterprises partially cut their support of social infrastructure in the rural areas, and in some cases, even completely depleted it. At the same time, the living conditions of the rural...

Relationships between Agricultural policies and Environmental Effects in Japan: An Environmental-Economic Integrated Model Approach AgEcon
Sasaki, Hiroki.
This study investigates the optimal agricultural land use allocation and nitrogen application to a representative Japanese farm. The site-specific nature of numerous agri-environmental issues necessitates analysis at a disaggregated level in order to capture the underlying heterogeneity of agricultural productivity and environmental sensitivity across different parcels of land. This study adopts an integrated approach—a decision-making economic model for representative farms is combined with a stylized site-specific biophysical model, which quantifies the impact of different policy instruments on agricultural production practices and on multiple environmental effects. This model estimates the government budget outlays and social welfare, which require...

The Adoption and Impact of Improved Maize and Land Management Technologies in Uganda AgEcon
Sserunkuuma, Dick.
In spite of the fact that the Ugandan National Agricultural Research System has developed and released several production-enhancing technologies over a century, yields of most major crops at the farm level have been low. Given that about 80 percent of Uganda’s labor force is employed in agriculture, the scope for sustainable poverty reduction in Uganda depends very much on improving agricultural productivity. It is in this context, this paper examines why there has been poor adoption of production-enhancing technologies in the production of maize, which is a major crop in Uganda and what the impacts of the exiting production environment are on factor payments. This study reveals that farmers do not pay proper attention to soil fertility management, which...

Going Digital: Computerized Land Registration and Credit Access in India AgEcon
Deininger, Klaus W.; Goyal, Aparajita.
Despite strong beliefs that property titling and registration will enhance credit access, empirical evidence in support of such effects remains scant. The gradual roll-out of computerization of land registry systems across Andhra Pradesh’s 387 sub-registry offices (SROs) allows us to combine quarterly administrative data on credit disbursed by all commercial banks for a 11 year period (1997-2007) aggregated to the SRO level with the date of shifting registration from manual to digital. Computerization had no credit effect in rural areas but led to increased credit-supply in urban ones. A marked increase of registered urban mortgages due to computerization supports the robustness of the result. At the same time, estimated impacts from reduction of stamp...

Evaluating Yield Models for Crop Insurance Rating AgEcon
Lanoue, Christopher; Sherrick, Bruce J.; Woodard, Joshua D.; Paulson, Nicholas D..
Generated crop insurance rates depend critically on the distributional assumptions of the underlying crop yield loss model. Using farm level corn yield data from 1972-2008, we revisit the problem of examining in-sample goodness-of-fit measures across a set of flexible parametric, semi-parametric, and non-parametric distributions. Simulations are also conducted to investigate the out-of-sample efficiency properties of several competing distributions. The results indicate that more parameterized distributional forms fit the data better in-sample due to the fact that they have more parameters, but are generally less efficient out-of-sample–and in some cases more biased–than more parsimonious forms which also fit the data adequately, such as the Weibull. The...

FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF AGRICULTURAL REAL ESTATE DEBT AgEcon
Boyette, Deborah K.; White, Fred C..
A market share analysis is undertaken to determine the contribution of the size of market effect, the distribution effect, and the competitive effect, the distribution effect, and the competitive effect to gains for the five major farm real estate lenders. Results are used as a basis for selection of variables for a demand-supply analysis. Separate demand and supply equations for new farm real estate debt over the 1951-81 period are estimated by three-stage least squares for three major lending groups. The results are used as a basis for simulation of Federal Land Bank supply response to selected policy changes. If current market conditions continue through 1990, FLB market share is expected to decrease 12.34 percent over the 1987-90 period. Higher FLB...
