A note on the population genetic consequences of delayed larval development in insects Genet. Mol. Biol.
Salles,Marcos Mattoso de; Otto,Paulo A..
Observations by Dobzhansky's group in the 1940s suggesting that the presence of recessive genotypes could account for lower larval developmental rates in Drosophila melanogaster were not confirmed at the time and all subsequent investigations on this subject focused on the analysis of ecological models based on competition among pre-adult individuals. However, a paper published in this journal in 1991 eventually confirmed the finding made by Dobzhansky and his co-workers. In this report, we provide a theoretical analysis of the population genetic effects of a delay in the rate of larval development produced by such a genetic mechanism.

Influence of diet assemblage on Ostrea edulis broodstock conditioning and subsequent larval development ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Ricardo; Mingant, Christian; Petton, Bruno; Robert, Rene.
In contrast with the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas and the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, Ostrea edulis seed production in the hatchery has been reported to be erratic, with sudden and unexplained larval and post-metamorphosis mortalities. Fecundity and initial larval quality have been related to broodstock conditioning, but effects on larval development and metamorphosis remain poorly understood. In addition, molluscan larval mortalities have been often associated with bacterial contamination and flow-through techniques may help to overcome this problem. Both aspects have been considered in the present work. O. edulis broodstock were conditioned at 19 °C and fed three different microalgal diets. Two were single-species diets: Rhodomonas salina...

His, Edouard; Quiniou, Francoise.
The quality of the seawater off the southwestern Atlantic coast of France was assessed by studying the effects of the water from three sites (Arcachon Bay, Mimizan and Capbreton) on larvae of the mussel (Mytilus edulis). Mussel larvae were raised in water samples taken at all three sites on March 12, 1991 and larval growth was monitored during 10 days. The results indicate that the water quality was best in the Bay of Arcachon, followed by Mimizan, whereas the water off Capbreton was possibly contaminated by pollutants.

Oyster culture in European countries ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
Three species of oysters have been or are cultivated in Europe: Crassostrea angulata, C. gigas, and Ostrea edulis. If we follow the taxonomic critera of Grassé, the European oysters belong to the group of Mollusca, class of Lamellibranchia or Bivalves, order of Filibranchia, family Ostreidae with two genera: C. angulata (Lamarck), Portuguese, cupped oyster; C. gigas, (Thunberg), Japanese or Pacific, cupped oyster; Ostrea edulis (Linné), fiat European oyster. Some authors think that C. gigas and C. angulata belong to the same species. lndeed, Ranson stated that the characteristics of the larvae are the same, and Menzel obtained viable hybrids (F2) between these two oysters. ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Maggi, Pierre; Le Baut, Claire; Bardouil, Michèle; Bocquene, Gilles; Le Dean, Loïc; Truquet, Philippe.
In order to estimate the effects of chlorine used in cooling systems of electric power plants on zooplankton, some experiments have been realized with the four first larval stages of the prawn (P. serratus Pennant). Chlorine injection was performed by constant adding at 16 and 20 degree C with times exposures of 5, 15 and 25 minutes. If there is no detectable variations in sensitivity of different stages, toxic effects of oxydants issued from chlorination can be observed (for both the two acclimatation temperatures) at 15 minutes exposure with a LD 50 : 32 mg/l of chlorine.

An experimental hatchery for bivalves and the different techniques used in Arcachon are described: sea water treatment, phytoplankton culture, conditionning of oysters for spawning and larval culture. This experimental unit has been organised to study the reasons why natural reproduction is disturbed in the bay. The quality of the oysters and the sea water was analysed to ascertain their capacity to acquire normal oyster development. Also, the influence of different micropollutants which may disturb the environment were studied. Observations during larval stage at various concentrations of chemicals include: percentages of fertilized eggs; percentage of D larvae former; percentages of normal and surviving larvae, larval growth, establishing growth curves...

The lipid content of spawned oocytes of Pecten maximus was studied by image analysis of semi -thin histological sections and a lipid index was defined. The female gametes were obtained by thermic stimulations of mature adults scallops from different populations after out of season conditioning or sampled in situ during the spawning season. After fertilization, the larval development was followed. The results reveal a large variability in lipid content of normal oocytes. The lipid content can be regarded as homogeneous inside a spawning but the heterogeneity is greater for wild scallops than for conditioned ones. A strong relationship appears between the lipid index and the hatching success, and the number of abnormal larvae after two days rearing. But no...

Non-additive effects of ocean acidification in combination with warming on the larval proteome of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Harney, Ewan; Artigaud, Sebastien; Le Souchu, Pierrick; Miner, Philippe; Corporeau, Charlotte; Essid, Hafida; Pichereau, Vianney; Nunes, Flavia.
Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide results in ocean acidification and warming, significantly impacting marine invertebrate larvae development. We investigated how ocean acidification in combination with warming affected D-veliger larvae of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Larvae were reared for 40 h under either control (pH 8.1, 20 °C), acidified (pH 7.9, 20 °C), warm (pH 8.1, 22 °C) or warm acidified (pH 7.9, 20 °C) conditions. Larvae in acidified conditions were significantly smaller than in the control, but warm acidified conditions mitigated negative effects on size, and increased calcification. A proteomic approach employing two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) was used to quantify proteins and relate their abundance to phenotypic traits. In...

Contribution à l'étude de la crevette rose Palaemon serratus (Pennant) : Exploitation, Biologie, Elevage, Epidémiologie ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
This these is the result of several years of investigations conducted on the common prawn Palaemon serratus in the Roscoff (northern Brittany) and Yeu (bay of Biscay) sectors of the French Atlantic coast. Following a description of the fishery and fishing strategies, it deals with the species biological aspects, focusing on growth, lifespan, sex-ratio and breeding. Hypotheses on the reasons for apparent variations in interannual abundance are drawn up and compared with field observations. The second part is devoted to production experiments in a controlled environment (hatchery), explaining how larvae are obtained and their development and survival with respect to food, density and physical parameters like salinity and temperature. The link between...

ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert; Regnault, M.; Luquet, P..
The evolution of nucleic acids in larvae of P. serratus reared in the laboratory from hatching to metamorphosis has been studied. From the 1st larval stage to the post-larval stage, DNA and RNA concn decrease: from 185 to 95 uMoles-bases/g PSD for DNA and from 133.5 to 78.75 uMoles-bases for RNA. The concn decrease is not regular; it is emphasized between stages 4 and 5 on the one hand, and between stage 7 and the post-larva on the other hand. The amount of DNA and RNA per larva increases proportionally to the wet weight from stage 1 to the post-larva. As the weight is multiplied by 7.6, total DNA and total RNA are multiplied by 3.80 and 4.25 respectively. The RNA/DNA ratio has a mean value of 0.77; it increases slightly from stage 1 (0.72) to the...

Allometric growth patterns and development in larvae and juveniles of thick-lipped grey mullet Chelon labrosus reared in mesocosm conditions ArchiMer
Ben Khemis, Ines; Gisbert, Enric; Alcaraz, Carles; Zouiten, Dora; Besbes, Raouf; Zouiten, Amina; Masmoudi, Ahmed Slaheddine; Cahu, Chantal.
Allometric growth and ontogeny were studied in thick-lipped grey mullet Chelon labrosus reared in mesocosms from 1 to 71 day post hatching (dph). Multivariate allometric analysis of morphometric growth distinguished three distinct developmental stanzas separated by two morphometric metamorphosis lengths (L-m1=4.46 +/- 0.06mm; L-m2= 28.56 +/- 1.04mm). Body mass growth also showed three distinct episodes separated by two inflections, correlated with morpho-functional changes. First episode concerned pre-flexion larvae and ended around 4.5mm-L-T (14-dph), coinciding with estimated L-m1. It was distinguished by reduced growth, but intense morphogenesis and differentiation processes. Organogenesis and allometric changes indicated that development priorities...

Proteolytic enzymes of hepatopancreas of six species of peneids (Penaeus kerathurus, P. japonicus, P. monodon, P. stylirostris, P. merguiensis and P. vannamei ) have been studied. Some of their physiological variations have been characterised. Increase in acclimation temperature of crustaceans enhances increase of specific activities of proteases. Variations of salinity does not modify specific activities, nor quantities of trypsin, nor electrophoretic patterns of these different proteases.

Effect of the probiotic strain Phaeobacter gallaeciensis after bacterial challenge on the complete larval development of Pecten maximus ArchiMer
Genard, Bertrand; Larouche, Olivier; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Miner, Philippe; Beaudin, Marie-lou; Tremblay, Rejean.
The aim of this project was to evaluate the impact of probiotic (Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, X34 strain) treatment on the complete development (from veliger to metamorphosis) of Pecten maximus larvae in the context of a bacterial challenge and in conditions more representative of hatchery practices. To that effect, the present study was divided into two main steps. In the first, we used in vitro analyses (antibiograms and microplate assays) to validate the inhibition abilities of X34 on the growth of four Vibrio pathogen species. During the second step, we added pathogens (Vibrio pectenicida) into rearing tanks after two weeks of pre-treatment with the probiotic and then followed the larval development of Pecten maximus through the monitoring of survival...

Effect of dietary phospholipid levels on performance, enzyme activities and fatty acid composition of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) larvae ArchiMer
Hamza, N; Mhetli, M; Ben Khemis, I; Cahu, Chantal; Kestemont, P.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary phospholipid on the development and rearing performance of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) larvae. From day 10 post-hatching, fish larvae were weaned onto three isoproteic and isolipidic formulated diets with different phospholipid (PL) levels: 1.4 (PL1), 4.7 (PL5) and 9.5% (PL9) of dry matter, as soybean lecithin. Neutral lipid (NL) with inversed gradient was incorporated in diets. Survival, growth and deformities were monitored until day 34 post-hatching, as well as intestinal enzyme activities, leucine alanine peptidase (leu-ala), aminopeptidase N (AN) and alkaline phosphatase (AP), which were used as indicators of digestive tract maturation. This study showed that PL supplementation...
