Consumption Rates and Performance of Erinnyis ello L. on Four Cassava Varieties Neotropical Entomology
BARRIGOSSI,JOSÉ A.F.; ZIMMERMANN,FRANCISCO J.P.; LIMA,PAULO S. DA C..
A laboratory experiment to determine the consumption rates of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and characterize the injury potential by Erinnyis ello L. was conducted. First instar larvae were individually reared on excised cassava leaves of four varieties. A randomized block design with nine replications was used. Fresh leaves were provided to the larvae daily. Leaf area was determined for each leaf before the leaves were provided to the larvae. Foliage consumption per instar, developmental time and weight of larvae and pupae were recorded. There were no significant differences in the larval consumption on the four varieties (P=0.82). Total leaf area consumption (square cm) for the varieties were: 1030.5 (Fio de Ouro), 971.5 (Aipim Bravo), 968.6...

Leaf consumption and duration of instars of the cassava defoliator Erinnyis ello (L., 1758) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Pratissoli,Dirceu; Zanúncio,José Cola; Barros,Reginaldo; Oliveira,Harley Nonato de.
The objectives of this research were to evaluate leaf consumption and the developmental time of the larvae of Erynnyis ello (L., 1758) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) reared on cassava, in order to obtain information for the integrated management of this pest. The larvae were reared on excised cassava leaves in Petri dishes and later in gerbox, and kept in chambers at 24 ± 2 ºC and 75 ± 10% RH. The total leaf area consumed by the larva to complete its development was 589.67 cm²; each of the five instars consumed, respectively: 1.89 cm²; 5.74 cm²; 17.48 cm²; 76.66 cm²; and 487.90 cm². The consumption by the first three instars was insignificant, and did not reach 5% altogether; the 4th represented 13%; the 5th presented a consumption significantly higher, about...

Development and soybean leaf consumption by Urbanus proteus proteus (L.) Scientia Agricola
Nava,Dori Edson; Parra,José Roberto Postali.
Urbanus proteus proteus (L.) is a defoliating pest of legumes, causing damage mainly on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and, being a minor pest, little is known about its bioecology. The objective of this paper was to study the larval and pupal development of the insect and the foliar consumption during its instars. Durations of 16.7; 1.1; 11.4 and 29.2 days were determined for the caterpillar, prepupal, and pupal stages, and the period from caterpillar-adult, respectively, with a total viability of 84.8%. The larval stage had five instars and the consumption of leaf area was 214.3 cm², with the consumption of the two last instars representing 96.9% of the total. Based on this value, the control level of the pest was...

Infestation of Mangroves by the Invasive Moth Hyblaea puera (Cramer, 1777)(Lepidoptera: Hyblaeidae) BABT
Faraco,Luiz Francisco Ditzel; Ghisi,Conrado Locks; Marins,Marina; Ota,Sueli; Schühli,Guilherme Schnell.
Abstract We report the first known infestation of mangroves by the invasive moth Hyblaea puera in Paraná, Southern Brazil. The infestation caused massive defoliation of Avicennia schaueriana trees, affecting approximately 20,000 hectares of mangroves. We discuss the implications for conservation and management, focusing on protected areas, the ecology of mangroves, and local livelihoods.
