Improving predictions of leaf appearance in field grown potato Scientia Agricola
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Lago,Isabel; Paula,Fabiana Luiza Matielo de; Bisognin,Dilson Antônio; Heldwein,Arno Bernardo.
The calculation of leaf appearance rate (LAR) and number of accumulated or emerged leaves (NL) on the main stem are part of many crop simulation models. The purpose of this study was to adapt and evaluate a model (WE model) for simulating the main stem LAR and NL in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). The WE model is a non-linear multiplicative model that takes into account the effect of genotype and environmental factors on LAR. A linear model (Phyllochron model) was also used as a comparison with the WE model. A series of field experiments with 14 planting dates over two years (2003 and 2004) was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, using the cultivar Asterix. Coefficients of the WE model and the phyllochron model were estimated with data from four...

Quality of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) DNA from foliar tissue at different stages of development Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Henao Ramírez,Ana María; Salazar Duque,Héctor Jaime; Urrea Trujillo,Aura Inés.
Abstract Theobroma cacao L. and its products are consumed worldwide. Those products are of great research interest due to antioxidant properties of some of their polyphenolic constituents. The amount of these polyphenols and polysaccharides has shown that can interfere with the high quality and quantity of nucleic acids for molecular research. Therefore, cocoa DNA extraction protocols can require a large amount of plant material and optimization time according with plant material source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and quantity of DNA isolated from field plant leaves at different developmental stages from TSH565 genotype using different DNA extraction protocols. In addition, DNA extraction protocol was evaluated for small amount of...

Improvement in light utilization and shoot growth in Hymenaea stigonocarpa under high CO 2 concentration attenuates simulated leaf herbivory effects Acta Botanica
Maia,Renata A.; Fernandes,Geraldo W.; Silva,Advanio I. S.; Souza,João Paulo.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the photochemical responses of photosystem II and growth of Hymenaea stigonocarpa under CO2-enriched conditions with exposure to simulated herbivory events. After herbivory simulation in two distinct parts of the stem of plants (apex and base), chlorophyll a fluorescence, chlorophyll index, growth, extrafloral nectary density, leaf mineral nutrition, and biomass production were evaluated. Plants of H. stigonocarpa grown under high [CO2] after simulated herbivory in the apical part of the stem had higher electron transport rate, effective quantum yield of photosystem II, and chlorophyll contents. However, simulated herbivory in the basal portion of plants grown under high [CO2] increased plant height, branch and root length,...

Shading effects on leaf life span and functional traits in the widespread species Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong Biological Sciences
Souza, João Paulo; Melo, Nayara Magry Jesus; Halfeld, Alessandro Dias; Reis, Jéssica Naiara.
Enterolobium contortisiliquum occurs in native forests formations from southeast to northeast Brazil, and too in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. The objective of this study was to evaluate shading effects in the early growth of E. contortisiliquum plants. We measured leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll content index, biomass allocation and leaf development in plants in sunny and shaded areas. The experiment was performed in Universidade Federal de Viçosa, campus Florestal, Minas Gerais, Brazil. To determine the effects of different light regimes (full sunlight and shade) on the growth of E. contortisiliquum plants, we divided plants into two groups: plants grown in a greenhouse under full sunlight, and plants grown under 70% shade tissue. E. contortisiliquum...

Base temperature for leaf appearance and phyllochron of selected strawberry cultivars in a subtropical environment Bragantia
Rosa,Hamilton Telles; Walter,Lidiane Cristine; Streck,Nereu Augusto; Andriolo,Jerônimo Luiz; Silva,Michel Rocha da; Langner,Josana Andréia.
Leaf development is characterized by the appearance of new leaves and is related to crop leaf area index, which affects the interception of solar radiation used for photosynthesis and biomass production and ultimately defines crop yield. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the base temperature for leaf appearance and to determine the phyllochron of two strawberry cultivars considering several planting dates. A two-year field experiment was conducted during 2008 and 2009 in Santa Maria (RS). The cultivars Arazá (early) and Yvapitá (late) were used at three planting dates in both years. Base temperature (Tb) was estimated using the Mean Square Error (MSE) approach of the regression between accumulated leaf number (LN) and accumulated thermal time...

Changes in lipid profile during growth and senescence of Catharanthus roseus leaf Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Mishra,Sanjay; Tyagi,Abhishek; Singh,I.V.; Sangwan,R.S..
Various lipid classes and compounds were monitored during the period of leaf emergence to leaf drop of Catharanthus roseus. The expansion to early maturation phase was accompanied by cellular build-up of all major lipid classes, whilst aging and senescence were characterized by their substantial decline, except for the neutral lipids; the leaf monogalactosyl diglyceride/digalactosyl diglyceride ratio decreased from 4.3 (complete maturity) to 2.1 (abscised stage). The early maturation stage was the earliest stage when appreciable amounts of free sterols and fatty acids could be observed. Sterol/phospholipids ratios increased by 68-fold in the abscised leaf as compared to that at full maturity. The unsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio was far lower in the...

A temperature response function for modeling leaf growth and development of the African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha Wendl.) Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto.
Response functions used in crop simulation models are usually different for different physiological processes and cultivars, resulting in many unknown coefficients in the response functions. This is the case of African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha Wendl.), where a generalized temperature response for leaf growth and development has not been developed yet. The objective of this study was to develop a generalized nonlinear temperature response function for leaf appearance rate and leaf elongation rate in African violet. The nonlinear function has three coefficients, which are the cardinal temperatures (minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures). These coefficients were defined as 10, 24, and 33ºC, based on the cardinal temperatures of other tropical...
