AMBITO DE HOGAR DE LIOLAEMUS MELANOPS BURMEISTER, 1888 (Squamata: Liolaemini) EN EL CENTRO DE CHUBUT, ARGENTINA Gayana
Frutos,Nicolás; Camporro,Leonardo A; Avila,Luciano J.

SEXUAL AND GEOGRAPHIC VARIATION OF COLOR PATTERNS IN LIOLAEMUS TENUIS (SQUAMATA, LIOLAEMINAE) Gayana
Vidal,Marcela A; Ortiz,Juan Carlos; Labra,Antonieta.
We studied sexual and geographic variation of color patterns in the lizard Liolaemus tenuis. We counted the number of scales with different colors in two body regions, in individuals of both sexes, from three groups of populations along a latitudinal range. Color patterns showed sexual and geographic variations; females and the northern group were the darkest. The selective pressures of these color pattern variations are unclear. However, considering that L. tenuis males are territorial and polygamous, we postulate that sexual variation in color would be consequence of sexual selection involving female choice and male-male interactions (e.g. agonistic displays among males). Geographic variation may be determined by predation pressure, as there is a...

Annual activity of the lizard Liolaemus occipitalis (Squamata, Liolaemidae) in the coastal sand dunes of southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bujes,Clóvis S.; Verrastro,Laura.
The activity pattern of the small sand lizard, Liolaemus occipitalis Boulenger, 1885, was investigated in the coastal sand dunes at Quintão beach (Palmares do Sul, southern, Brazil), between September 1998 and August 1999. The results showed that L. occipitalis is active all along the year, but with variations in its daily and seasonal activity patterns associated to climatic changes in the habitat. Lizard activity pattern was distributed as follows: under the sand, burrowed (73%), under vegetation (14%), dislocation (7%) and basking (6%). Mean habitat temperatures (air and substrate) were significantly different. The results indicate that L. occipitalis is a thigmothermic and heliothermic species that regulates its body temperature through behavioral...

Sexual dimorphism in Liolaemus occipitalis (Iguania, Tropiduridae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Verrastro,Laura.
The sexual dimorphism in size, morphology and color of the lizard Liolaemus occipitalis Boulenger, 1885 was studied. Thirty-two adult males and twenty-eight adult females were sampled from a population in the Jardim do Éden beach, near Tramandaí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Size related sexual dimorphism occurred in all compared body dimensions. The largest female was 59.6 mm in snout-vent length, and the largest male was 69.3 mm. Males and females also presented differences in ventral and dorsal color pattern, and in the presence of pre-cloacal pores. The results suggest that, in Liolaemus occipitalis, sexual dimorphism in size is determined by sexual selection, competition between males and by the high energetic cost for females a few months after hatching.

Historical Biogeography of a Clade of Liolaemus (Iguania: Liolaemidae) based on ancestral areas and dispersal-vicariance analysis (DIVA) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Díaz Gómez,Juan Manuel; Lobo,Fernando.
Although many phylogenetic studies have been made on the genus Liolaemus, they are inappropriate for a biogeographic study because of incomplete taxon sampling. Here we develop a biogeographic analysis using a new phylogenetic study of the chiliensis group, which differs from the other studies in having his members fully represented. The biogeographic analysis presented here consists in reconstructing the ancestral area of this clade, under three different methods of analysis: Fitch Optimisation, Dispersal Vicariance Analysis and Weighted Ancestral Area Analysis. The analyses were made on phylogenies from parsimony under equally weighted characters, as well as under implied weighting. The equally weighted tree recovers most of the groupings proposed in...

Sources of pheromones in the lizard Liolaemus tenuis RChHN
Labra,Antonieta; Escobar,Carlos A.; Aguilar,Paz M.; Niemeyer,Hermann M..
Experimental tests were conducted with the lizard Liolaemus tenuis (Tropiduridae), to determine the potential sources of pheromones used in its chemical communication, centered in the phenomenon of self-recognition. During the post-reproductive season, feces of both sexes and secretions of precloacal pores (present only in males) were tested. Stimuli were presented to lizards spread on rocks, and the number of tongue-flicks (TF) to the rocks was used as a bioassay to determine pheromone recognition. Feces contained pheromones involved in self-recognition, since lizards showed less TF confronted to rocks with suspensions of their own feces than with suspensions of feces of conspecifics or with water (control). In order to assess the chemical nature of...

Ciclo reprodutivo de machos de Liolaemus occipitalis Boulenger (Sauria, Tropiduridae) Zoologia
Verrastro,Laura; Krause,Lígia.
The aim of this work is to describe the reprodutive cycle of the males of L. occipitalis from the coastal sand-dunes of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. It was carried out between April/86 and March/88, at Jardim Atlântico Beach, Tramandaí, Rio Grande do Sul. These lizards showed reprodutive activity between September and December, with a retreat period during January and February. The seasonality of the reprodutive cycle became fully evident by the monthly variation of the testicular mass, showing an inverse relation with the temperature along the year.

Observações sobre o comportamento de Liolaemus occipitalis em cativeiro (Sauria, Tropiduridae) Zoologia
Bujes,Clóvis Souza; Verrastro,Laura.
Liolaemus occipitalis (Boulenger, 1885) is an abundant lizard lbundalong lhe coastal dunes of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Fourteen individuais were manually captured in the dunes of Quintão beach (Palmares do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul) and studied in captivity from 23/VII/92 to 30/VII/93. They were kept in a terrarium with sand substrate and vegetation collected in their habitat. Snout-vent length (SVL) and wcighted were measured weekly. They received Tenebrio molitor (Linnaeus, 1758) worms as food; water was abundant. Combats between males for food and territory, and other behavioral displays were observed, like copulation and nesting behaviors. Growth curves for each lizard were analyzed.

Lagartos iguanios del Colhuehuapense (Mioceno Temprano) de Gaiman (provincia del Chubut, Argentina) Ameghiniana
Albino,Adriana M.
