Ant species (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) from the seasonally dry tropical forest of northeastern Brazil: a compilation from field surveys in Bahia and literature records Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ulysséa,Mônica A.; Brandão,Carlos R. F..
Ant species (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) from the seasonally dry tropical forest of northeastern Brazil: a compilation from field surveys in Bahia and literature records. The Caatingas occur predominantly in northeastern Brazil and comparatively it is the biome that received less attention than any other ecosystem in Brazil, representing the region where invertebrate groups are less known. We present here the first list of ant species of the Caatingas, compiling information from the literature, from a study of samples preserved in alcohol in the Laboratory of Entomology (Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana), and from a field survey conducted in Milagres, Bahia, submitting standardized 1-m² samples of the leaf-litter to Winkler extractors. Summing all...

A new species of Seira Lubbock (Collembola, Entomobryidae), with a key to the species of Paraíba, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Bellini,Bruno Cavalcante; Zeppelini,Douglas.
A new species of Entomobryidae of the genus Seira Lubbock, S. paraibensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated. The type locality of the species is the municipality of Areia, state of Paraíba, Brazil. The species was found inhabiting the Atlantic forest litter and top soil environment. S. paraibensis sp. nov. resembles S. pseudoannulata in many morphological features. This is the sixth species of the genus found and described in Paraiba so far. A key with the 11 species of Seira registered so far in Paraíba is provided. Also a list with all species of the genus from Brazil is presented.

A new species of Xenylla (Collembola: Poduromorpha: Hypogastruridae) with new records for the state of Espirito Santo, southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Fernandes,Liliane Henriques; Mendonça,Maria Cleide de.
A new species of Xenylla Tullberg, 1869, X. capixaba sp. nov., is described and illustrated. In addition, we present a list with new records of Poduromorpha from the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Xenylla yucatana Mills, 1938 and Brachystomella platensis Najt & Massoud, 1974 are for the first time recorded in Brazil. Also, the distributions of B. ceciliae Fernandes & Mendonça, 2004, B. contorta Denis, 1931 and Arlesia albipes (Folsom, 1927) are expanded to include Espírito Santo. Brachystomella agrosa Wray, 1953, previously recorded in agricultural soils, was also found in a marine environment.

Checklist of dragonflies and damselflies (Insecta: Odonata) of the Amazonas state, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Koroiva,Ricardo; Neiss,Ulisses Gaspar; Fleck,Günther; Hamada,Neusa.
Abstract: Here we provide a checklist of the odonates from Amazonas state, Brazil. We registered 324 species and 101 genera, making Amazonas the Brazilian state with the most Odonata species recorded. The families with the highest number of species were Coenagrionidae with 32 genera and 101 species, followed by Libellulidae with 28 genera and 100 species and Gomphidae with 12 genera and 45 species. Some regions of Amazonas state remain poorly explored, such as the southern area, and large municipalities, such as São Gabriel da Cachoeira. This work underlines the importance of the biological diversity from Amazonas state and the Amazonian Biome for Odonata species richness in Brazil and shows that many areas in the world’s largest tropical forest have not...

Arctiinae (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Nascimento,Milena de Sousa; Ferro,Viviane Gianluppi; Monteiro,Ricardo Ferreira.
This study describes the composition and distribution of the Arctiinae species (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) in Rio de Janeiro, generating the first list of Arctiinae species in the state. We assessed the variations in species composition and the different vegetation types in the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected primarily through surveys of museums and publication lists of species. We also conducted field sampling in March and September 2010. Of the 2,077 records covering 28 municipalities, 679 Arctiinae species were found in Rio de Janeiro state and were divided into two tribes and 220 genera. The location with the highest number of species recorded was Itatiaia, with 362 species, followed by Petrópolis and Angra dos Reis, with 320 and 306...

Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) collected on the inner continental shelf of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Oceanographic Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I and II Biota Neotropica
Grohmann,Priscila Araci; Nogueira,Claudio do Carmo; Silva,Vera Maria Abud Pacífico da.
The Brazilian Navy (DHN/MB) commissioned a series of Oceanographic Operations covering almost the entire inner continental shelf of the country from the 1960s through the 1980s. Surveys provided geological data on the sea bottom and marine biota along the entire Brazilian coast. This report lists data on 15 hydroid species collected during Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I in 1979 and GEOCOSTA RIO II in 1986, at depths ranging from 25 to 89 m. Hydroids were obtained at two of 65 stations in Operation GEOCOSTA RIO I, each represented by one species: Aglaophenia rhynchocarpa Allman, 1877 and Plumularia strobilophora Billard, 1913. In Operation GEOCOSTA RIO II, hydroids were present at four of the 25 sampled stations. Fourteen species were recorded: Pennaria disticha...
