The dynamic of coastal marine microphytoplankton communities is characterized by successions of species assemblages displaying typical schemes of spatio-temporal variability. Numerous studies of phytoplankton spatio-temporal variability have concerned holistic variables such as total biomass or primary production. Such studies deal with the role of primary producers in the global functioning of the pelagic ecosystem, but have little relevance to other problematics. For instance, knowledge of the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton communities and of their spatio-temporal patterns is necessary to understand the mechanisms favouring of the predominance of a precisely identified population within phytoplankton communities. The introduction of the limpet Crepidula fornicata on French coasts occurred through a number of stages of unequal amplitude. The two main stages are the result of a) its transportation on the hulls of the Allies ships during WWII, and b) the voluntary introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas in the 1970s. A recent assessment of its distribution shows that it can be found from the North Sea to the Mediterranean shores, resulting in some conflicts, due to its high density. This document presents a synthetic study of benthos in two large areas of the French coast: East-Channel and the area between Loire and Gironde. This original synthesis stocktakes biotopes maps published for the vast majority in the 70’s. The report uses the previous descriptions and analysis done by the different authors, and translates them with present specific names or biotopes codes, as proposed in the European EUNIS referring system. The presented maps are standardized and referred geographically with WGS84 to be collated together. For each biotope, specific richness and ecological richness are analysed, thanks to the information given by the various authors.
