ABSTRACT This work aimed to study the spatial autocorrelation of the total static capacity storage, the total number of warehouses in 2013/2014 (CONAB) and the average of the total grain production (soybean, corn 1st and 2nd crops and wheat) in the harvest years 2008/2009 to 2013/2014 (SEAB) in Paraná State, Brazil. The study was based on Moran's global autocorrelation index, Moran's local and Moran's bivariate correlation. It was possible to identify regions with low and high total grain production. There was positive spatial autocorrelation for the Total Static Storage Capacity (TSSC) and Total Quantity of Warehouses (TQW). For the total grain production, significant spatial autocorrelation were found. The total static storage capacity showed similarity... |

Supply chain management in grain marketing has become very important with the maturity of the industry. This is particularly important in the Canadian grain marketing system which has experienced disruptions for various reasons over many years. These problems have been the topic of numerous industry evaluations, have resulted in a complaint about service obligations and recently have been addressed by the Estey Commission. A detailed model of the supply chain in the Canadian grain logistics system was developed in this paper to evaluate factors that cause disruptions, as well as the effect of several important logistics and marketing strategies on system performance. The results indicated that in a normal year there is sufficient randomness throughout... |

The potential advantages of locally grown produce are mainly related to the coexistence of production and consumption in the same area. These advantages are: reduced transportation, freshness, better taste, easy traceability, transparency, food safety, environmental sustainability and community development. Despite these positive aspects, the money spent for locally grown produce represents only a small percentage of the total money spent for fresh produce purchases. On the other hand, interest is growing for furnishing produce to local produce schools, hospitals and public institutions. The supply chains of locally grown produce are classified into direct marketing distributions (farmers’ markets, CSAs, roadside stands, on-farm stores) and indirect... |

While theoretically more efficient than starch-based ethanol production systems, conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol is not without major challenges. A multi-region, multi-period, mixed integer mathematical programming model encompassing alternative feedstocks, feedstock production, delivery, and processing is developed. The model is used to identify key cost components and potential bottlenecks, and to reveal opportunities for reducing costs and prioritizing research. The research objective was to determine for specific regions in Oklahoma the most economical source of lignocellulosic biomass, timing of harvest and storage, inventory management, biorefinery size, and biorefinery location, as well as the breakeven price of ethanol, for a... |

Ethanol production is increasingly commonplace in many grain producing regions. This paper uses the grain producing region of Western Australia as a case study to illustrate how the location and size of an ethanol plant affects its grain accumulation costs. Specifically, this study examines how price variability of various wheat grades, combined with spatial and temporal variability in production of those grades affects the costs of grain accumulation for ethanol production. These costs are the main component of a plant's operating costs so lessening these costs can offer a comparative advantage for a plant owner. Logistics models' based on mathematical programming were constructed to depict a range of plant sizes and locations for ethanol production. The... |

This paper describes the important changes that occurred in the U.S. grain handling and transportation system in the period following deregulation in 1980. This system has evolved and will continue to do so in response to technological and institutional changes, competitive pressures and a changed regulatory regime. The effect has been to induce investments throughout the system ultimately to improve the efficiency. Some of the important rail innovations include the use of rate discounts to induce more efficient movements from origins first, and more recently at destinations. In addition, each railroad has adopted car allocation systems comprising of several mechanisms, giving shippers logistical choices which have also facilitated more efficient... |

Currently, Brazil is the greatest worldwide producer and exporter of sugar. Therefore, it is expected better defined forms to restrict high costs, which are normally present in many of the factors involved in the process of production and product commercialization. Under that context, this study searched to characterize the distribution process of the sugar produced in State of São Paulo, indicating in a summarized manner, the main agents involved within the sector, the flow observed by the product until its final delivery and the evolution of transport prices and final prices of the product during the months of the year. The method used to conduct this research was based on primary data survey and on the application of specialized econometric models. In... |

The purpose of this article was to discuss cost parameters for the milk collection freight, based in the theoretical principles of scale economies and distance. Such study is justified for the difficulties to measure the parameters which might help in the management of the fleets, relating to the case of milk transportation. The costs related to different kinds of vehicle were estimated, through cost spreadsheets developed by the pattern support system and also the parameters of fleet efficiency related to Economies of scale, and distance for transportation. It was evidenced economy in favor of the vehicles with major transport capacity; such evidences could direct the table negotiations of freights, signaling for the preference for the use of this type of... |

Fair Trade related import from developing countries is quickly growing although it still represents a small share of the total import. Its influence on the development of rural areas in developing countries is related to both quantitative growth and the respect of its ethical code. Large food multi-national companies are increasingly interested in Fair Trade; part of the Fair Trade movement considers the risk of a related loss in the products identity; others consider the refusal of a more "professional" approach to Fair Trade management as a constraint to its growth. This debate is particularly felt in Italy. The goal of this paper is to evaluate how the most important Italian Fair Trade importers (ATOs) business models influenced their growth... |

The traceability allows, for each product, to sketch the manufacturing process through a system documentary, enabling to identify the operational structures involved, the products and the lots, to define the flows of production, packaging and distribution. There are researches that investigate the traceability within the firm, but little work has been carried out on the investigation of the traceability system over the whole supply chain. The supply-chain of fresh produce is constituted of many links: producer/grower, warehouse, packing centre, distribution centre, retailers and finally the consumer. Each of these is a system itself that interacts with the other components of the supply-chain. The non-conformity could occurs in each of these links. Because... |

Transportation and shipping costs of ornamental horticulture are 10% of total cost of production in Georgia. With many small to medium sized producers using their own independent transportation system, methods to optimize vehicle operations are desired. Will a transportation alliance reduce shipping costs, increase distribution efficiencies, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions among ornamental plants producers in Georgia? The study shows alliances are not only feasible, they have average total cost savings of 9%, average total miles driven savings of 8%, average number of trucks savings of 8%, average driving hours savings of 15%, and average carbon dioxide emissions savings of 8%. |
