Updated standardized CPUE of blue shark bycaught by the French Reunion-based pelagic longline fishery (2007-2020) ArchiMer
Sabarros, Philippe; Coelho, Rui; Romanov, Evgeny V; Guillon, Nicolas; Bach, Pascal.
The blue shark Prionace glauca is the main bycatch species of the French swordfish-targeting longline fishery operating in the south-west Indian Ocean. Using observer and self-reported data collected aboard commercial longliners between 2007 and 2020, we propose a standardized CPUE series for blue shark for this fishery estimated with a lognormal generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to be used for the upcoming stock assessment. We propose to use the standardized CPUE for the period comprised between 2011 and 2020 where the monitoring effort has been consequent in comparison with previous years. Throughout 2011-2020, the standardized CPUE for the blue shark shows a significant decreasing trend.

Effect of pelagic longline bait type on species selectivity: a global synthesis of evidence ArchiMer
Gilman, Eric; Chaloupka, Milani; Bach, Pascal; Fennell, Hannah; Hall, Martin; Musyl, Michael; Piovano, Susanna; Poisson, Francois; Song, Liming.
Fisheries can profoundly affect bycatch species with ‘slow’ life history traits. Managing bait type offers one tool to control species selectivity. Different species and sizes of marine predators have different prey, and hence bait, preferences. This preference is a function of a bait’s chemical, visual, acoustic and textural characteristics and size, and for seabirds the effect on hook sink rate is also important. We conducted a global meta-analysis of existing estimates of the relative risk of capture on different pelagic longline baits. We applied a Bayesian random effects meta-analytic regression modelling approach to estimate overall expected bait-specific catch rates. For blue shark and marine turtles, there were 34% (95% HDI: 4–59%) and 60% (95%...

Estimation des stocks de poissons des lagons de Nouvelle-Calédonie : 2 – Stocks des poissons de fond et des poissons associés aux récifs coralliens ArchiMer
Kulbicki, M; Labrosse, Pierre; Letourneur, Y.
Fish stocks found on lagoon bottoms and near reefs are characterized by a high diversity and heterogeneous habitat which make stock estimation difficult. In particular, it is necessary to combine several methods in order to evaluate the major components of these stocks. The present study aimed at estimating reef fish stocks in the Northern Province of New Caledonia, a region where they represent a major target for the local fishermen. These estimates were based on experimental fishing with handlines and bottom longlines. Handlines were used to assess the stocks near reefs, and longlines for those in areas away from reefs and on lagoon soft bottoms. Handline stations (363) were sampled in three different regions (west, north and east lagoons) and three...

Point, alpha and beta diversity of carnivorous fish along a depth gradient ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Souissi, Sami; Uiblein, Franz.
The catch from bottom longline stations sampled from a series of research cruises around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, NE Atlantic) was analysed in terms of fish distribution, density and diversity. The distribution of the number of species and individuals caught per station appeared to fit well the Poisson and Exponential distribution function, respectively. In particular, the parameter of the Poisson's distribution appeared to provide an index of the point (at station scale) diversity, and its confidence interval, allowing for statistical comparisons. The relationships between point diversity, the alpha diversity (in the depth strata) and the beta diversity (along the depth gradient) were investigated. Around the islands, the density and...

Bioecology and movements of bull sharks, Carcharhinus leucas , caught in a long-term longline survey off northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Niella,Yuri V.; Afonso,André S.; Hazin,Fábio H. V..
ABSTRACT A robust understanding of habitat usage by coastal shark species, and how it overlaps with human presence in densely-populated regions is needed to inform the development of efficient conservation strategies for these important top predators. An intensive longline survey conducted in nearshore waters off northeastern Brazil from 2004 through 2014 caught a total of 18 bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) (male-female ratio = 0.63:1), which can be dangerous to humans. Although most sharks were sexually mature, there was no evidence that this region could be used as a parturition or nursery area. Prey items identified in the guts of the sharks comprised teleosts, mollusks and elasmobranchs. Additionally, one satellite-tagged bull shark covered a great...

Impact of commercial fishing on Trindade Island and Martin Vaz Archipelago, Brazil: characteristics, conservation status of the species involved and prospects for preservation BABT
Pinheiro,Hudson Tercio; Martins,Agnaldo Silva; Gasparini,João Luiz.
Visual records, radio interviews and onboard observations of the fishing activities during a 58 days scientific expedition to Trindade Island and the Martin Vaz Archipelago were obtained from February to April 2007. The regular activities of four different fisheries were observed: pelagic longline, bottom line, trolling and handline. These fisheries caused mortality of at least seven species with some level threat, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature list. The establishment of specific restriction norms for hook-and-line activities around the oceanic islands was seen as an alternative for the conservation of the ichthyofauna of the region. Satellite monitoring to track the fishery vessels could be established through the...
