Volatility Persistence in Commodity Futures:Inventory and Time-to-Delivery Effects AgEcon
Karali, Berna; Thurman, Walter N..
Most financial asset returns exhibit volatility persistence. We investigate this phenomenon in the context of daily returns in commodity futures markets. We show that the time gap between the arrival of news to the markets and the delivery time of futures contracts is the fundamental variable in explaining volatility persistence in the lumber futures market. We also find an inverse relationship between inventory levels and lumber futures volatility.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE DETERMINANTS OF LUMBER FUTURES PRICE MOVEMENTS AgEcon
Rucker, Randal R.; Thurman, Walter N.; Yoder, Jonathan K..
Recent lumber price volatility has been attributed to Spotted Owl Litigation and U.S.-Canada trade disputes. We use intervention analysis to explain daily lumber futures price volatility based on these events and other factors. The way information enters the market is shown to affect the speed and extent of market reaction.

Economics of the US - Canada Softwood Lumber Dispute: A Historical Perspective AgEcon
Rahman, S.M. Osman; Devadoss, Stephen.
This paper reviews the U.S.-Canada softwood lumber dispute over the past two decades by outlining the key developments and critically appraising the arguments put forward by both countries. It also presents a welfare analysis of lumber trade distortions. Given the importance of lumber trade between Canada and the United States, an expeditious resolution of this long-running trade dispute would be beneficial for both countries.

An Evaluation of Canadian and U.S. Policies of Log and Lumber Markets AgEcon
Devadoss, Stephen.
The recent lumber trade war between Canada and the United States deals with Canadian stumpage policies, Canada’s log export controls, and U.S. retaliatory duty. This study determines the appropriate level of U.S. countervailing duty (CVD) by employing a vertically interrelated log–lumber model. The theoretical results show that the U.S. CVD can be greater (will be less) than the Canadian subsidy for a vertically related log–lumbermarket (for lumber market only). Empirical results support the theoretical findings in that the U.S. CVD for the log–lumber market (lumber market alone) is 1.55 (0.91) times the Canadian subsidy.

Recent Developments in the US - Canadian Softwood Lumber Disputes AgEcon
Devadoss, Stephen; Roman, Angel Aguiar.
Since the United States and Canada could not resolve their contentious dispute on lumber trade, both countries approached the World Trade Organization to resolve this long-running disagreement. Each country filed three petitions covering (a) countervailing duties (CVD), (b) antidumping, and (c) material injury resulting from CVD and antidumping. This article briefly reviews the dispute, explains both countries' factual arguments submitted to the WTO, presents the WTO rulings on the three petitions, and discusses the economic implications of WTO findings.

TO 'B' OR NOT TO 'B': AN ANALYSIS OF ALBERTA UNDER THE SOFTWOOD LUMBER AGREEMENT AgEcon
Ryan, Chris; Mach, Helmut.
On October 16th 2006 the Canada-United States Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) came into effect. The SLA followed years of trade disputes and litigation initiated by U.S. lumber producers. The SLA ended litigation and dispute procedures by implementing an agreed Canadian export restriction and export tax regime. However, even with a formal agreement in place, points of contention remain on either side. The intent of this study is to evaluate Alberta’s performance under the SLA since its inception in 2006 and the implications for the future. To that end, there are several important characteristics of the SLA that are important to define. The SLA uses a system of export taxes and volume targets to attempt to restrict the total volume of softwood lumber...
