Dynamic Time Warping of Paleomagnetic Secular Variation Data ArchiMer

We present and make publicly available a dynamic programming algorithm to simultaneously align the inclination and declination vector directions of sedimentary paleomagnetic secular variation data.This algorithmgenerates a library of possible alignments through the systematic variation of assumptions about the relative accumulation rate and shared temporal overlap of two or more time-series. The paleomagnetist can then evaluate this library of reproducible and objective alignments using available geologic constraints, statistical methods, and expert knowledge.We apply the algorithm to align previously (visually) correlated medium to high accumulation rate northern North Atlantic Holocene deposits (101– 102 cm/ka) with strong radiocarbon control. A 2.14-Myr astronomically tuned record of relative geomagnetic paleointensity from the western Philippine Sea ArchiMer

We present a 2.14-Myr astronomically tuned relative geomagnetic paleointensity record from the western Philippine Sea. Pseudosingle-domain titanomagnetite is the only magnetic mineral identified and variations in titanomagnetite concentration fall well within the accepted limits for relative paleointensity variations. No significant temporally persistent periodicities are observed in wavelet analyses of the paleointensity time series or in the rock magnetic parameters used for relative paleointensity normalization. This suggests that our paleointensity record is largely free of rock magnetic or lithological artefacts and that it represents a reliable record of geomagnetic behavior with no evidence for modulation of the field at Earth orbital periods. The youngest geomagnetic polarity reversal, the Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) boundary, provides an important plane of data for sediments, ice cores, and lavas. The geomagnetic field intensity and directional changes that occurred during the reversal also provide important information for understanding the dynamics of the Earth's outer core, which generates the magnetic field. Paleomagnetic constraints on the age of the Botucatu Formation in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)

Paleomagnetic and rockmagnetic data are reported for the aeolian Botucatu Formation, in the southern Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul. Oriented samples were taken from a section located between the cities of Jaguari and Santiago. After thermal and alternating field demagnetization, both normal and reversed characteristic remanent magnetizations were found. These results yielded 13 reversed and 5 normal polarity sites, composing a magnetostratigraphic column displaying a sequence of reversed-normal-reversed polarity events. The paleomagnetic pole calculated for 18 sites is located at 114.7ºE, 78.5ºS (dp=8.1º; dm=1.2º), after restoring the strata to the paleohorizontal.
