Scenarios for Resilient Shrimp Aquaculture in Tropical Coastal Areas Ecology and Society
Bush, Simon R.; Wageningen University; simon.bush@wur.nl; van Zwieten, Paul A.M.; Wageningen University; paul.vanzwieten@wur.nl; Visser, Leontine; Wageningen University; leontine.visser@wur.nl; van Dijk, Han; Wageningen University; han.vandijk@wur.nl; Bosma, Roel; Wageningen University; roel.bosma@wur.nl; de Boer, Willem F.; Wageningen University; Fred.deBoer@wur.nl; Verdegem, Marc; Wageningen University; marc.verdegem@wur.nl.
We contend there are currently two competing scenarios for the sustainable development of shrimp aquaculture in coastal areas of Southeast Asia. First, a landscape approach, where farming techniques for small-scale producers are integrated into intertidal areas in a way that the ecological functions of mangroves are maintained and shrimp farming diseases are controlled. Second, a closed system approach, where problems of disease and effluent are eliminated in closed recirculation ponds behind the intertidal zone controlled by industrial-scale producers. We use these scenarios as two ends of a spectrum of possible interactions at a range of scales between the ecological, social, and political dynamics that underlie the threat to the resilience of mangrove...

Remote Sensing and Ethnobotanical Assessment of the Mangrove Forest Changes in the Navachiste-San Ignacio-Macapule Lagoon Complex, Sinaloa, Mexico Ecology and Society
Koedam, Nico; Vrije Universiteit Brussel; nikoedam@vub.ac.be; Ruiz Luna, Arturo; CIAD-Mazatlan; arluna@victoria.ciad.mx; Troell, Max; Beijer Institute; max@beijer.kva.se; Dahdouh-Guebas, Farid; Vrije Universiteit Brussel; fdahdouh@vub.ac.be.
The present study focuses on the Navachiste-San Ignacio-Macapule lagoon complex in northwest Mexico and evaluates the spatiotemporal change in the mangrove area over the last three decades using Landsat MSS and TM imagery. Local ethnobotanical uses of the mangrove forest and local perceptions about the status and recent development of the mangrove forest cover are also analyzed. The results of interviews with 54 inhabitants of four fishing villages in the study area indicated that, overall, Laguncularia racemosa is the most frequently used species in this region of the Mexican Pacific coast, where it serves as firewood and a construction material, particularly for walls and fences. The next-ranked species were Avicennia germinans, which is used for tea,...

Isolation of total RNA from tissues rich in polyphenols and polysaccharides of mangrove plants Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rubio-Piña,Jorge A; Zapata-Pérez,Omar.
RNA extraction from mangrove tissues can be difficult due to the presence of polyphenolic and polysaccharide compounds upon cell disruption. Besides, a successful RNA isolation from mangrove tissues sometimes can be strain and species specific. Two different methods were used to extract RNA from tissues (stems, leaves and roots) of black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), collected from the mangrove area at Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico. An optimized and modified total RNA isolation method was developed for these recalcitrant species. The protocol is based on the CTAB method including β-mercaptoethanol and PVPP with sequential Phenol/Chloroform/isoamyl alcohol extractions to remove protein, and polyphenols,...

A three-year mark-recapture study in a remnant population of Crocodylus acutus Cuvier in Portete Bay (Guajira, Colombia) Gayana
Espinosa,Mara I; Bertin,Angéline; Gómez,John; Mejía,Florencio; Guerra,Martha; Baez,Lina; Gouin,Nicolas; Patiño,Edgar.
The American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, has experienced important population declines worldwide due to human persecution, overexploitation and habitat loss. C. acutus remains critically endangered in some countries such as Colombia where the lack of detailed surveys on its ecology and distribution constitutes a major barrier to the development of effective conservation strategies. We conducted a three-year capture-recapture study to investigate the demographic status of C. acutus and to identify environmental variables likely to in uence its distribution in Portete Bay (Colombia). We estimated the crocodile population to be relatively small (< 140 animals), to include very few adults, and to demonstrate a very strong de cit in females in the juvenile...

Relative growth of Uca burgersi (Crustacea, Ocypodidae) from two mangroves in the southeastern Brazilian coast Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Benetti,Aline Staskowian; Negreiros-Fransozo,Maria Lucia.
The relative growth of the fiddler crab Uca burgersi Holthuis, 1967 was analyzed in two populations from different mangroves (Ubatumirim and Cavalo rivers) in the southeastern Brazilian coast, monthly sampled from May, 2001 to April, 2002. The population from a high productivity level mangrove reaches the sexual maturity in larger sizes than the population from a less productive site. This results can be attributed to the greater amount of nutrients found in the Cavalo than in Ubatumirim mangrove.

Seasonal abundance of the shipworm Neoteredo reynei (Bivalvia, Teredinidae) in mangrove driftwood from a northern Brazilian beach Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
S. Filho,Carlos; Tagliaro,Claudia H.; Beasley,Colin R..
Shipworms are important decomposers of wood, especially in mangrove forests where productivity is high. However, little emphasis has been given to the activity of shipworms in relation to the export of nutrients from mangroves to adjacent coastal areas. As a first step to obtaining such information, the frequency of colonized mangrove driftwood as well as shipworm density and length were studied by collecting washed up logs during a year at Ajuruteua beach, state of Pará, northern Brazil. A single species, Neoteredo reynei (Bartsch, 1920), was found colonizing driftwood. Although large colonized logs were most common on the beach, shipworm density was higher in small logs, especially during the dry season. In general, however, density was higher during the...

Mangrove increases resiliency of the French Guiana shrimp fishery facing global warming ArchiMer
Diop, Bassirou; Blanchard, Fabian; Sanz, Nicolas.
This paper deals with the biological, ecological and economic impact of global warming and mangrove habitat availability on the French Guiana shrimp fishery. A dynamic bio-economic model is built by employing a shrimp stock's growth function depending on Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and on mangrove surface. The model is empirically calibrated for the French Guiana shrimp fishery using time series collected over 1995–2011. First, two Cobb-Douglas functions, which describe shrimp's natural growth and harvest, are estimated. Then, a Maximum Economic Yield (MEY) harvest rule, based on the optimization of the net present value derived from fishing, is computed. Three management strategies are compared (Closure, Status Quo management, and MEY) under three...

Seasonal Pattern of the Biogeochemical Properties of Mangrove Sediments Receiving Shrimp Farm Effluents (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Marchand, Cyril; Molnar, N.; Deborde, Jonathan; Della Patrona, Luc; Meziane, Tarik.
Coastal tropical shrimp farming may impact the adjacent ecosystems through the release of large quantities of effluents rich in nutrients. In New Caledonia, mangroves are considered as a natural biofilter to reduce impacts on the surrounding World Heritage listed lagoon. Our main objective was to understand the influence of effluent discharge on the biogeochemistry of mangrove sediments. A monitoring of the physico-chemical parameters of mangrove sediments was carried out during a whole year, including active and non active periods of the farm. The parameters studied were: i) benthic primary production (Chl-a concentrations), ii) physico-chemical parameters of sediments (redox potential, pH, salinity, TOC, TN, TS, δ13C and δ15N), iii) concentrations of...

Chaves, P; Bouchereau, Jl.
The Bay of Guaratuba, whose area is approximately 45 km(2), is a basin, situated to the south of Brazil (25 degrees 52' S; 48 degrees 39' W) and connected to the Atlantic ocean. In its northern part, a region of mangrove is found, under the influence of seasonal fluvial contributions, dominated by Laguncularia racemosa. The depth exceeds 6 m in some places. According to the period of the year, salinity varies between 3 and 37, and temperature between 15 and 28 degrees C. Several of the present fish species are exploited by commercial and recreational fisheries. This work describes characteristics of the fish populations occupying this mangrove, and temporal and spatial evolution of populations of the main species from available data on their biology....

Trophic role of large benthic sulfur bacteria in mangrove sediment ArchiMer
Pascal, Pierre-yves; Dubois, Stanislas; Boschker, Henricus T. S.; Gros, Olivier.
Large filamentous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the Beggiatoacae family can cover large portions of shallow marine sediments surrounding mangroves in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). In order to assess the importance of Beggiatoa mats as an infaunal food source, observations were conducted of the area within mats and at increasing distances from mats. We used natural isotopic compositions and a C-13 enrichment study. Both revealed an ingestion of bacterial mats by associated meiofauna, dominated by rotifers and to a smaller extent by small polychaetes and nematodes. Compared to adjacent sites, sediment covered by bacterial mats presented a higher abundance of diatoms, whereas the total biomass of bacteria did not vary. This constant bacterial...

Chauvaud, S; Bouchon, C; Maniere, R.
In the framework of a comprehensive study of the coastal marine ecosystems of Guadeloupe Island (French West Indies), a remote sensing survey of marine communities was conducted in the Bay of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. Pictures of SPOT satellite were used. At first sight, XS data from SPOT did not seem to be well adapted to extract information from deepest underwater areas. In the present study, a method for analysis of XS data was developed, which increases tenuous spectral differences associated to very low intensity signals. This technique led to a better distinction of objects, even the deepest ones. Reference surfaces were then identified in the field and a reliable supervised classification was conducted, which reflected the high diversity of...

Sulfate-reducing bacteria [rom mangrove swamps II : Their ecology and physiology ArchiMer
Bharathi, Pal; Oak, S; Chandramohan, D.
Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been enumerated and physiologically characterized in three mangrove stations along the Zuari estuary. The substrates for counting were lactate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate. Benzoate oxidizing SRB were widespread and occurred in numbers up to 6.62 x 10(3)/g dry sediment. The next highest in number were lactate utilizing SRB. On an average there were more propionate and butyrate utilizers than acetate utilizers. While Agasaim at the mouth of the estuary harboured highest number of lactate oxidizers, none were detected at Mirabaug upstream during the samplings. The SRB shared many characteristics with Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, D. desulfuricans aestuarii, D. salexigens, Desulfotomaculum orientis, D....

In West Africa, as in many other estuaries, enormous volumes of marine water are entering the continent. Fresh water discharge is very low, and it is commonly strongly linked to rainfall level. Some of these estuaries are inverse estuaries. During the Great Sahelian Drought (1968–1993), their hyperhaline feature was exacerbated. This paper aims to describe the evolution of the two main West African inverse estuaries, those of the Saloum River and the Casamance River, since the end of the drought. Water salinity measurements were carried out over three to five years according to the sites in order to document this evolution and to compare data with the historical ones collected during the long dry period at the end of 20th century. The results show that in...

The mangrove's contribution to people: Interdisciplinary pilot study of the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve in Viet Nam ArchiMer
Cormier-salem, Marie-christine; Van Trai, Nguyen; Burgos, Ariadna; Durand, Jean-dominique; Bettarel, Yvan; Klein, Judith; Duc Huy, Hoang; Panfili, Jacques.
The main objective of this pilot study, conducted in June 2015 in the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve (Can Gio MBR, Viet Nam), was to develop an interdisciplinary approach to assess some key services provided by reforested mangroves subject to external pressures and varying management policies. We focused on the abundance of viruses, bacteria, endo-and epi-and macrofauna and the diversity of crabs in the mangrove and the exploitation of its resources. The main social finding was that the local inhabitants are aware of the levels of protection of the different zones within the Can Gio MBR and respect them. The core and the buffer zones seem to present a similar ecological status. Genotyping showed a low level of crab diversity although there were many...

ArchiMer
Auda, Yves; Populus, Jacques; Blasco, F.

Genetic recolonization of mangrove: genetic diversity still increasing in the Mekong Delta 30 years after Agent Orange ArchiMer
Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Duarte, Carlos M.; Teixeira, Sara; Massa, Sonia Isabel; Terrados, Jorge; Nguyen Hong, Tri; Phan Nguyen, Hong; Serrao, Ester A..
The widespread use of Agent Orange (a mixture of phenoxyl herbicides) over Southern Vietnam by US Forces led to the decimation of mangrove forests in the Mekong Delta. Mangrove trees Avicennia alba were sampled across the Mekong Delta; their age was assessed using models based on internode growth and samples were genotyped for 6 microsatellite loci. The evolution of genetic diversity over time elapsed since local extinction was reconstructed and compared with the genetic diversity of an unaffected population from Thailand, The results show that genetic diversity of the A. alba population is still increasing in the Mekong Delta 3 decades after the end of the Vietnam War, but is reaching an asymptotic level that is comparable to the adjacent non-affected...

Meiofauna distribution in a mangrove forest exposed to shrimp farm effluents (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc; Marchand, C.; Hubas, C.; Molnar, N.; Deborde, J.; Meziane, T..
Meiofauna abundance, biomass and individual size were studied in mangrove sediments subjected to shrimp farm effluents in New Caledonia. Two strategies were developed: i) meiofauna examination during the active (AP) and the non-active (NAP) periods of the farm in five mangrove stands characteristics of the mangrove zonation along this coastline, ii) meiofauna examination every two months during one year in the stand the closest to the pond (i.e. Avicennia marina). Thirteen taxonomic groups of meiofauna were identified, with nematodes and copepods being the most abundant ones. Meiofauna abundance and biomass increased from the land side to the sea side of the mangrove probably as a result of the increased length of tidal immersion. Abundance of total...
