Biosorption of uranium from aqueous solutions by nonliving biomass of marinealgae Cystoseira indica Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Hassan Khani,Mohammad; Reza Keshtkar,Ali; Meysami,Behrouz; Firouz Zarea,Mohammad; Jalali,Reza.
Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this paper uranium biosorption by protonated, Ca-pretreated and non-pretreated Cystoseira indica algae biomass was investigated in a batch system. The results of the kinetic studies showed that the sorption of uranium on protonated and non-pretreated biomass followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The effect of pH on the equilibrium uranium sorption capacity of Cystoseira indica exhibited that highest uptake occurred at pH 4 at a solution with 350 mg/l uranium concentration. At various initial uranium concentrations from 50 to 1000 mg/l, batch sorption equilibrium at 30ºC was reached within 3 hrs and the sorption...

Morphology and reproduction of Asiatic Ulva pertusa (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in Thau Lagoon (France, Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Verlaque, Marc; Belsher, Thomas; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
A detailed study of vegetative and reproductive phases of several populations of a common species of Ulva from Thau Lagoon (France, Mediterranean Sea) showed that the material is in good agreement with Asiatic Ulva pertusa Kjellman. Since October 1994, the date of its first observation in Thau Lagoon, U. pertusa has developed abundant reproductive populations. It is highly probable that this species was introduced at Thau along with oyster transfers from the Pacific. Ulva pertusa is new to the Mediterranean Sea.

Marées vertes en Bretagne : état actuel des connaissances ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel.
On tens of sandy beaches of Brittany, a green seaweed (Ulva) blooms during spring and summer. In the sites where the proliferation is the most important, the total biomass amounted to 20 000 t of wet weight in 1997, at the time of maximum. These "green tides" occur every year in nearly the same locations. They have a very harmful impact on local tourism. In many communes, beached and rotting algae are collected and dumped (43 000 m 3 as a whole in 1997). The main development of biomass takes place between the surf zone and the bare sand. The outbreak requires three coexisting conditions : 1) a sandy beach gently sloping, 2) a weak residual current (i.e. once the tidal back and forth movement has been filtered), 3) a nitrogen loading, even moderate (ammonium...

Ecotron - Embiez - Utilisation d'engrais agricoles comme source de nutrilites pour la culture massive de quelques algues marines ArchiMer
Guerin-ancey, O.; Maestrini, S.y.; Beker, L..
The use of agricultural manures for marine algae mass production. Thirteen marine algal strains belonging to different taxonomic groups have been grown in different artificial media : two culture solutions used for laboratory experiment (ANTIA and CHENG, 1970) or mass culturing (WALNE, 1970), and enriched sea waters prepared with three mixtures of purified nutrients and nine of agricultural manures Data obtained show that none of the binary or ternary manures support a good algal growth ; cell densities are generally limited to 37 % of those observed with reference medium ("Conway medium"). Mixtures prepared with agricultural nitrate and phosphate (10 N/l P) are more convenient for this purpose ; chelated-iron did not enhance algal growth. Cell densities...

Floridoside extracted from the red alga Mastocarpus stellatus is a potent activator of the classical complement pathway ArchiMer
Courtois, Anthony; Simon-colin, Christelle; Boisset, Claire; Berthou, Christian; Deslandes, Eric; Guezennec, Jean; Bordron, Anne.
Many biological properties of algae have been found to have useful applications in human health, particularly in the fields of oncology and immunology. Floridoside, extracted from the red alga Mastocarpus stellatus, has a structure similar to the xenoantigen Gal alpha 1-3 Gal. This xenoantigen has been described to induce a high immune response in human xenografts and is mediated by natural anti-gal antibodies that activate the classical complement pathway. Based on this property, we analyzed the potential activities of floridoside on the immune system. We demonstrated that floridoside activates a complement cascade via the classical complement pathway, through the recruitment and activation of natural IgM. This algal molecule could represent an important...

Marine Polysaccharides: A Source of Bioactive Molecules for Cell Therapy and Tissue Engineering ArchiMer
Senni, Karim; Pereira, Jessica; Gueniche, Farida; Delbarre-ladrat, Christine; Sinquin, Corinne; Ratiskol, Jacqueline; Godeau, Gaston; Fischer, Anne-marie; Helley, Dominique; Colliec-jouault, Sylvia.
The therapeutic potential of natural bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, especially glycosaminoglycans, is now well documented, and this activity combined with natural biodiversity will allow the development of a new generation of therapeutics. Advances in our understanding of the biosynthesis, structure and function of complex glycans from mammalian origin have shown the crucial role of this class of molecules to modulate disease processes and the importance of a deeper knowledge of structure-activity relationships. Marine environment offers a tremendous biodiversity and original polysaccharides have been discovered presenting a great chemical diversity that is largely species specific. The study of the biological properties of the...

Valorisation des rejets urbains et thermiques en zone littorale - Production primaire ArchiMer
Bazzon, H.; Lepailleur, M.; Rogger, M..
Discharges of urban sewage water and waste heat from industries or power plants can be used in modern saltwater aquaculture. Urban sewage water diluted to 30 % in seawater which temperature is increased of 10 to 15° C gives a primary productivity equal to the productivity of a standard culture medium. That bio-treatment which includes the addition of calories to the seawater, eliminates up to 90 % of the phosphorus and the nitrates.

Algal flora associated with a Halophila stipulacea (Forsskal) Ascherson (Hydrocharitaceae, Helobiae) stand in the western Mediterranean ArchiMer
Rindi, F; Maltagliati, F; Rossi, F; Acunto, S; Cinelli, F.
Halophila stipulacea, a seagrass introduced into the Mediterranean Sea as a Lessepsian immigrant, is nowadays common in the eastern Mediterranean, and it was recently recorded in the western Mediterranean; very little information is available about the algal flora associated with this species. During a survey of a Halophila stipulacea stand at Vulcano Island (Eolian Islands, western Mediterranean), samples were collected at three depths (5 m, 15 m and 25 m) for identification of algal epiphytes. Thirty-six species of macroalgae were found. The epiflora of the leaves consisted of 20 species, the others being mixed with or entangled in the rhizomes. On the leaves, Ceramium tenerrimum, Dasya corymbifera, Polysiphonia cfr. tenerrima, Spyridia filamentosa,...

Alternative calcium source effects on commercial egg production and quality Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Pelícia,K; Garcia,EA; Scherer,MRS; Móri,C; Dalanezi,JA; Faitarone,ABG; Molino,AB; Berto,DA.
This study aimed at verifying the possibility of replacing calcitic limestone by marine calcium in the diet of layers. A total number of 321 Hi-sex hens, with 40 weeks of age at the beginning of the experiment, was used. A completely randomized experimental design was applied, with 5 treatments (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 % of calcitic limestone replacement by marine calcium source) and eight replicates of eight birds each. Treatments significantly affected specific gravity (p<0.05), with the inclusion of 60% marine calcium (T5) presenting the worst result as compared to T1, which included only calcitic limestone as calcium source. It was concluded that marine calcium can replace up to 45% of calcitic limestone with no effects on performance or egg quality.

Bangiopsis subsimplex (Mont.) F. Schmitz (Stylonematales, Rhodophyta) on the northeastern coast of Brazil Acta Botanica
Almeida,Wellington Romualdo de; Guimarães,Silvia Maria Pita de Beauclair; Moura,Carlos Wallace do Nascimento.
We report here the first occurrence of Bangiopsis subsimplex (Mont.) F.Schmitz (Rhodophyta) for the northeastern coast of Brazil. The specimen was isolated from a laboratory sample of mollusk shells collected in Baía de Todos os Santos (Bimbarras Island, Brazil) and was held in sterilized seawater (33 UPS) enriched with 25% Provasoli solution. In the American Atlantic region, B. subsimplex presents a northern distribution limit at French Guiana and a southern limit at São Paulo. We conclude that the distribution of B. subsimplex has expanded, since the species was once known only to the southeastern Brazil, specifically to São Paulo.

Rodrigues, José Ariévilo Gurgel; Barcellos, Priscila Gomes; Glauser, Bianca Fernandes; Quinderé, Ana Luíza Gomes; Benevides, Norma Maria Barros; Tovar, Ana Maria Freire; Mourão, Paulo Antônio de Souza.
The biotechnological value of macroalgae for screening assays of thrombin generation-TG using sulfated polysaccharides-SPs as substitutes to heparin has been poorly explored. Five Brazilian species of macroalgae (Gracilaria birdiae, Acanthophora muscoides, Halymenia sp., Caulerpa cupressoides and C. racemosa) were analyzed and compared for their abundance, physical-chemical characteristics and in vitro anticoagulant assays of activated partial thromboplastin time-APTT, prothrombin time-PT and TG. Papain extraction yielded (p < 0.001) from 0.66±0.03% (C. racemosa) to 41.60±1.10% (Halymenia sp.) of crude SPs  varying sulfate (8.41-42.60%) and total sugars (47.80-70.53%). Crude SPs showed difference in mobility and resolution pattern by agarose...

A method of determining cut position of automatic stem removal system for salted wakame CIGR Journal
Yimit, Adiljan; Takagi, Motoki; Hagihara, Yukari; Miyoshi, Tasuku; Hagihara, Yoshihiro.
In the wakame manufacturing procedure, the manual operation process of stem removal is known to hinder the production process. In order to solve this problem, the manufacture aspires to develop an automatic wakame stem removal system. The purpose of this paper is to propose a cut position detection method for the system by picking up the characteristic changes that appear at the cross section of the wakame. In this method, with the utilization of exposure control, two images are captured from the same cross section that is made by a developed device. These images are used in the segmentation of the cross section. The positions where the stem should be cut can then be determined through the examination of the thickness of the cross section. To test the...

Rodrigues,José Ariévilo Gurgel; Vanderlei,Edfranck de Sousa Oliveira; Bessa,Érika Façanha; Magalhães,Francisco de Araújo; Paula,Regina Célia Monteiro de; Lima,Vilma; Benevides,Norma Maria Barros.
The aim of this study was to evaluate certain molecular characteristics of a sulfated polysaccharide (SPs) with anticoagulant properties, isolated from Caulerpa cupressoides (Chlorophyta). Crude SPs were extracted by proteolytic digestion (papain), followed by ion-exchange chromatography on a DEAE-cellulose column. The fractions obtained were analyzed for molecular mass, 0.5% agarose gel electrophoresis and chemical composition. The activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) test was applied using normal human plasma and standard heparin (HEP) (193 IU mg-1). The yield was ~ 3%, and the chromatography procedure separated the material into three different SP fractions (F I, F II and F III), eluted at the concentrations of 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 M of NaCl,...
