Overfishing has historically caused widespread stock collapses in the Southern Ocean. Until recently, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing threatened to result in the collapse of some of the few remaining valuable fish stocks in the region and vulnerable seabird populations. Currently, this unsustainable fishing has been reduced to less than 10% of former levels. We describe and analyze the emergence of the social-ecological governance system that made it possible to curb the fisheries crisis. For this purpose, we investigated the interplay between actors, social networks, organizations, and institutions in relation to environmental outcomes. We drew on a diversity of methods, including qualitative interviews, quantitative social network and... |

This study provides an analysis of vesicomyid bivalve–symbiont community distribution across cold seep and hydrothermal vent areas in the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California, Mexico). Using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches including fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), and electronic microscopy observations, vesicomyid clam species and their associated symbionts were characterized and results were analyzed in light of geochemical conditions and other on‐site observations. A greater diversity of vesicomyids was found at cold seep areas, where three different species were present (Phreagena soyoae [syn. kilmeri], Archivesica gigas, and Calyptogena pacifica). In contrast, A. gigas was the only species sampled across the hydrothermal... |

The behaviour of southern elephant seals from Kerguelen Island (4950′S, 7030′E) was investigated in relation to the oceanographic regions of the Southern Ocean. The oceanographic and the seal behaviour data, including location and diving activity, were collected using a new generation of satellite-relayed devices measuring and transmitting pressure, temperature, and salinity along with locations. Dive duration, maximum diving depth, time spent at the bottom of the dives, and shape of dive profiles were compared between male and female seals, and were related to the oceanographic characteristics of areas prospected by the seals. Most animals travelled to the Antarctic shelf. However, during winter, adult females travelled away from the... |

Although molecular ecology of macroparasites is still in its infancy, general patterns are beginning to emerge, e.g. that the most vagile host in a complex life cycle is the main determinant of the population genetic structure of their parasites. This insight stems from the observation that populations of parasites with only freshwater hosts are more structured than those with terrestrial or airborne hosts. Until now, the same has not been tested for marine systems, where, in theory, a fully marine life cycle might sustain high dispersal rates because of the absence of obvious physical barriers in the sea. Here, we tested whether a marine trematode parasite that utilises migratory birds exhibited weaker population genetic structure than those whose life... |

Biodiversity is a holistic concept which encompasses what the scientific literature describes as inter-specific diversity (diversity between species), intra-specific diversity (genetic diversity) and diversity of ecosystems. As a support of life, the preservation of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine habitats is of primary importance for the ecological balance of the Earth. Moreover, it is essential for human beings whose lifestyle depends on nature. The value of biodiversity lies with the opportunities provided to mankind to adapt to a changing environment. Concerning specifically the seas and oceans that constitute ¾ of the planet and 90% of the biosphere, there is a renewed ‘ecological awareness’ at the global level on the need to preserve marine... |

This first issue is devoted to the use of indicators for ICAM, and is a direct result of the IOC-DFO-NOAA-CSMP International Workshop on the same topic, organised in May 2002, in Ottawa. Based on a background paper prepared by the Center for the Study of Marine Policy (University of Delaware) in preparation for the workshop, the aim of this Reference Guide is to present a literature review on the use of indicators around the world, from various programmes and projects, at global, regional, national and local scale. The need for indicators and reporting techniques which reflects the performance of coastal management projects and programmes and reveals the complex relationship that exist between coastal ecosystem health and anthropogenic activities,... |

Analysis of 450 sediment samples from various rivers in Nigeria have resulted in the identification of seven major drainage systems some of which may be potential sources of heavy mineral contribution to the continental shelf. The seven major drainage systems are: (1) Niger/Benue drainage system with coarse to medium size sediments and a high of 90% opaque mineral concentration in many cases. Some gem heavy minerals like garnet and zircon are also recorded. (2) Gombi drainage system: consists of medium to coarse sand. Opaque mineral concentrations are also high. Up to 90.59% at station BO.99.3. (3) Bauchi Plateau drainage system: Sediments from this drainage system are very coarse and highly angular. This drainage system records the highest overall opaque... |
