Quality of mini tomatoes harvested at two maturity stages and kept chilled in three packages Horticultura Brasileira
Caron,Vanessa C; Tessmer,Magda A; Mello,Simone C; Jacomino,Angelo P.
The economic importance of small tomato fruits has been increased considerably due to the significant levels of lycopene and sugars. However, to achieve these compounds, the harvest is limited to a ripening stage demanded by consumers, which could reduce this marked period. Harvesting at an early stage and use of conservation techniques are desirable to amplify the marketing period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of small tomato fruits, Sweet Grape cultivar, harvested at two stages of ripening (light red and red), kept in three types of package (perforated PET, PEBD 30 μ and Vegetal Pack 18 μ) at a temperature of 20±1ºC and a relative humidity (RH) of 85±5% during 20 days. During this period, gas composition inside the packaging (O2, CO2...

Notes on nine biological indicators estimable from trawl surveys with an illustrative assessment for North Sea cod ArchiMer
Cotter, John; Mesnil, Benoit; Witthames, Peter; Parker-humphreys, Matt.
This paper reviews a selection of nine indicators for assessing the biological state of a fish population monitored only by using trawl surveys in which catchability is assumed constant from time to time and place to place. The intention is to inform or remind of the range of possibilities and of associated practical and statistical issues. The indicators, grouped according to relationships with abundance, length, age, weight, and reproduction, are documented in a standard format covering estimation, interpretability, sensitivity, considerations for reference points where possible, and an example of their application. Lastly, selected indicators together with year-class curves fitted to abundance indices-at-age are applied to the North Sea cod to...

Measurement of volume of macaw palm fruit using traditional and the digital Moiré techniques AGRIAMBI
Costa,Anderson G.; Ribeiro,Elisângela; Braga,Roberto A.; Pinto,Francisco A. C..
ABSTRACT The macaw palm crop has been studied because of its bioenergy potential due to the high oil yield, which is linked to fruit maturity stage. Digital images have been adopted as a contactless way to obtain information about fruit surface area and volume, acting as a sensor for quality control and the classification of fruits, based on physical aspects during the maturation stage. The aim of this study was to estimate the volume of macaw palm fruits from digital models obtained by the Moiré technique using only one camera, associated with digital image-processing tools to unwarp the images, allowing the comparison with conventional methods. The volumes obtained by the Moiré technique were compared with those obtained by water displacement method...

Physical and mechanical parameters correlated to the ripening of mangoes ( Mangifera indica L.) cv. 'Tommy Atkins' Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Souza-Costa*,Josenara Daiane De; Cardoso-Almeida,Francisco De Assis; Figueiredo-Neto,Acácio; Lucena-Cavalcante,Ítalo Herbert.
Abstract: Studies on the maturation of mangoes in growing regions may help determine the optimal harvest strategies to support proper post-harvest handling and improve the fruit shelf life. The aim of the present study is to evaluate changes and establish correlations of physical and mechanical parameters during the ripening of mangoes cv. 'Tommy Atkins' collected from fifty plant rows in a commercial orchard. The fruits were picked at 35, 50, 65, 80, 95, 110, 125 and 135 days after flowering (DAF). Fruit mass, longitudinal diameter (LD), transverse diameter (TD), fruit firmness, force and maximum deformation compression, tension and Hencky's strain were evaluated. The statistical design was totally randomized with four replications with ten fruits each....

Ripening and shelf life of 'BRS Caipira' banana fruit stored under room temperature or refrigeration Ciência Rural
Lima,Orjana Santos; Souza,Elaine Goes; Amorim,Edson Perito; Pereira,Márcio Eduardo Canto.
BRS Caipira variety, internationally known as 'Yangambi km 5', is an alternative to meet the demand of 'Maçã'-type fruit due to its resistance to Panama disease. This study had the objective of generating information about 'BRS Caipira' fruit ripening and cold storage potential. For the ripening study fruits were stored under room temperature conditions (25±2°C / 58±6% U.R.) and assessed for postharvest life evaluation and characterization of seven maturity stages based on peel color: completely green - MS1; green with yellow traces - MS2; more green than yellow - MS3; more yellow than green - MS4; yellow with green tips - MS5; completely yellow - MS6; yellow with brown spots - MS7. For the cold storage potential study, fruits at MS1 were cold stored...
