As decisões judiciais sobre casos de maus-tratos contra animais podem ser subsidiadas por laudos de peritos em bem-estar animal. O objetivo foi desenvolver e aplicar um novo protocolo para diagnóstico de bem-estar animal em casos de suspeitas de maus-tratos. O Protocolo de Perícia em Bem-estar Animal (PPBEA) é composto por quatro conjuntos de indicadores: nutricionais, de conforto, de saúde e comportamentais, os quais devem ser classificados em inadequados, regulares e adequados.
