The European hake, Merluccius merluccius, is an important resource for Mediterranean fisheries. This study focuses on juvenile and adult hake feeding ecology in the Gulf of Lions, using information from scientific surveys carried out during two seasons and three years (2004-2006). Stomach content and stable isotope (ä15N, ä13C) analyses were performed, and the main factors explaining variations in ä15N were investigated using GLMs. In the Gulf of Lions, hake mostly fed on crustaceans and fish and a dominant piscivorous regime was reached at 15 cm total length. Pelagic fish (sardine, anchovy and small blue whiting) were the main source of prey (40%-80%) and cannibalism was low (<5%). The results confirmed that hake is an opportunistic feeder and also... |

Consumption of marine organisms represents one of the main exposure sources of contaminants for human populations. To obtain a global view of the contamination in commercial fish in the NW Mediterranean Sea, we analysed four types of priority contaminants (PCBs, PBDEs, Hg and Cs-137) in the European hake, Merluccius merluccius, from the Gulf of Lions in relation with organism's trophic level (delta N-15). All contaminants presented a significant increase in concentration in hake muscle with trophic level. However, obvious differences between contaminants were evidenced. Biomagnification factors (BMF and FWMF) along the hake food web were higher for Hg and CB-153 than for BDE-47 and Cs-137, and increase in contaminant concentration with trophic level... |

Chemical contamination levels and stable isotope ratios provide integrated information about contaminant exposure, trophic position and also biological and environmental influences on marine organisms. By combining these approaches with otolith shape analyses, the aim of the present study was to document the spatial variability of Hg and PCB contamination of the European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the French Mediterranean, hypothesizing that local contaminant sources, environmental conditions and biological specificities lead to site-specific contamination patterns. High Hg concentrations discriminated Corsica (average: 1.36 ± 0.80 μg g− 1 dm) from the Gulf of Lions (average values < 0.5 μg g− 1 dm), where Rhône River input caused high PCB burdens.... |

Due to stock declines there is a growing interest in farming of European hake Merluccius merluccius. Thus, knowledge of its sperm biology is of importance not only for purposes of broodstock management, but also for the development of sperm preservation techniques. Hake sperm were collected from mature males caught during the summer-early autumn waters off western Norway and during the winter-early spring in the Bay of Biscay (France). Sperm quality characteristics were assessed after storage at 4 degrees C for 25 +/- 14 h. Average (+/- SD) values for Norwegian and French samples respectively were (i) sperm volume: 3.9 +/- 4.0 and 2.6 +/- 4.0 ml; (ii) spermatozoa concentration: 6.6 +/- 3.2 and 13.9 +/- 5.1 x 10(9) spermatozoa/ml; (iii) spermatocrit: 80.2... |

Growth parameters of any species are fundamental for biological or dynamic studies. The quality of the estimation for these parameters directly impacts on species stock assessment and, as a consequence, on fisheries management. In order to improve fishery and species stock management, growth analysis, especially by sex, is recommended. In this study, otoliths were used to estimate growth parameters of Merluccius merluccius Rafinesque, 1810. Hake is well-known as being a species in which otolith interpretation is extremely difficult. To estimate growth parameters, the first daily increment was validated as the tool for age determination. Otolith interpretation was done according to the last results of ICES cooperative research report. In total, a sample of... |

The present study provides updated information on the occurrence, abundance and biomass distribution patterns and length frequencies of Merluccius merluccius in the Mediterranean Sea, by analysing a time series of data from the Mediterranean International Trawl Surveys (MEDITS) from 1994 to 2015. The highest values of abundance and biomass were observed in the Sardinian Seas. The use of a generalized additive model, in which standardized biomass indices (kg km–2) were analysed as a function of environmental variables, explained how ecological factors could affect the spatio-temporal distribution of European hake biomass in the basin. High biomass levels predicted by the model were observed especially at 200 m depth and between 14°C and 18°C, highlighting... |

Dissections of mature and non-mature European hake males and females (N=142) collected in waters off the western coast of Norway and in the Bay of Biscay (France) in 2004-2006 demonstrate for the first time that this gadoid species contains drumming muscles. There were differences in drumming muscles weight with body length, sex and maturity stage. This study shows that the difference between females and males is primarily manifested during the spawning season, seen both in the French and Norwegian samples. For the mature females the drumming muscles dry weight increases only slightly, if at all, with increase in total length. For mature males there is a corresponding rapid increase. There does not seem to be any consistent difference between the average... |

Controlled experiments were conducted to assess the effects of T-bar and DST tagging on post-release survival and growth of European hake. In this study, two groups of each 30 hake were considered: small fish (SF, average total length: 29.9 cm +/- 2.2 cm) and large fish (LF, average total length: 36.4 cm +/- 2.5 cm). Within each size group, fish were randomly assigned to one of 3 treatment groups: control (C), T-bar tagging referred as conventional tagging (CT) and DST tagging (DST) with dummy tags. After 4 months, the overall survival rate was 35%. Smaller fish were less impacted by the stress induced by handling, anaesthesia and tagging and in the SF group, the survival rates were similar (30%) for CT or DST. Specific growth rates were highly variable... |

Hake (Merluccius merluccius) is widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the most exploited demersal fish. In Tunisia, hake is captured from the north to the south (KHOUFI et al., 2010). Hake is an important species of economic interest and thus the subject of a large literature, but its biology remains insufficiently known, particularly on terms of age and growth estimations, which are essential for stock assessment and management. Otolith microstructure provides a useful tool for age determination of juvenile hake, based on daily increment deposition (ARNERI & MORALES-NIN, 2000; MORALES-NIN et al., 2005; KACHER & AMARA, 2005; BELCARI et al., 2006). Consequently, we studied growth and estimated age, using... |

Several fleets with various fishing strategies operate as a mixed fishery in the Bay of Biscay. Among the main fleets, bottom trawlers target Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) and, together with gillnetters, they also catch hake (Merluccius merluccius). Trawling leads to average-size catches that are below the minimum landing size (MLS); such catches are discarded since they cannot be sold. These discards result in negative impacts on stock renewal, as most of them do not survive. This also results in an economic loss for both bottom trawlers and gillnetters since these discards represent a future loss of rent. This study, based on the 2009 and 2010 selectivity experiments at sea, assesses the short- and long-term bio-economic impacts of four... |
