ABSTRACT Knowledge regarding the static pressure drop in granular layers is of fundamental importance in the development of efficient drying and aeration projects of agricultural products. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of impurity contents on the static pressure drop in different bed depth of castor bean grains, as well as modify the mathematical models per the obtained experimental data and select the model that best represents this phenomenon. First, impurities in castor bean grains of the Guarani variety were eliminated and 6% of the moisture content (dry basis) was retained. ABSTRACT The knowledge of physical properties of grains is important for the optimization of postharvest operations. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of moisture content over physical properties of different cultivars of soybean. Soybean of cultivars NS7901RR, TMG1180RR, P98Y70 and TMG132RR were used, with initial moisture content of 0.32, 0.27, 0.25 and 0.21 dry basis (d.b.), respectively. In order to dry the samples, an oven of forced air circulation was used. Mathematical models to describe the volumetric shrinkage rate of red beans during drying REA

The present study aimed to determine the volumetric shrinkage rate of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seeds during air-drying under different conditions of air, temperature and relative humidity, and to adjust several mathematical models to the empiric values observed, and select the one that best represents the phenomenon. Six mathematical models were adjusted to the experimental values to represent the phenomenon. It was determined the degree of adjustment of each model from the value of the coefficient of determination, the behavior of the distribution of the residuals, and the magnitude of the average relative and estimated errors. The Knowledge of the physical properties of agricultural products has great importance for the construction and operation of equipment for drying and storage, to achieve increased efficiency in post-harvest operations. The aim was to determine and analyze the physical properties of crambe fruits during drying at different temperatures. Crambe fruits with an initial moisture content of 0.36 (decimal d.b.) which was reduced by drying at 37.0; 58.8 and 83.5 ºC and relative humidity of 29.4; 11.2 and 3.2%, respectively, to 0.09 ± 1 (decimal d.b.). Determination of logs moisture by different methods PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The aim of this study was to compare three alternative methods to determine the moisture content of wood logs with the method recommended by ABNT. The moisture content of the wood was determined in a sawdust sample and with a electric meter capacitive. it was also determined the moisture content of a disk sample using the method recommended by ABNT. Using the regression model, all the methods were statistically similar. It was concluded that the use of alternative methods for determining the moisture content of wood in logs is feasible, to substitute the traditional method, but corrections must be implemented.

Bidens gardneri is a herbaceous species of the cerrados, whose seeds are light sensitive at 25 °C, but they become indifferent to light when stored in soil. In this work the effects of moisture content, temperature and light (during storage) upon light sensitivity during germination were studied. Ripe achenes were collected in the cerrados of Itirapina and Moji Guaçu, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The storage conditions of the achenes varied in each experiment. Achenes were stored in darkness or light, in closed bottles, at 4 °C, 20/30 °C or 25 °C. Achenes were imbibed for 24 h at 4 °C, 25 °C or 20/30 °C (in darkness) and then stored for 1, 10, 20, 30 and 40 days (40 days only for 4 °C and 25 °C). This study compares the chemical composition of the solution and exchange complex of soil in a 3-year-old irrigated vineyard (Vitis vinifera L., Red Globe cultivar) with that of adjacent clearing in the native hyperxerophyllic 'caatinga' vegetation. The soils are classified as Plinthic Eutrophic Red-Yellow Argisol; according to Soil Taxonomy they are isohyperthermic Plinthustalfs. Detailed physiographic characterization revealed an impermeable gravel and cobble covering the crystalline rocks; the relief of this layer was more undulating than the level surface. ABSTRACT Knowledge of the water sorption phenomenon in Brazil nut seeds will allow proper handling of this product, especially with regard to adequate conditions for safe storage. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the sorption isotherms (desorption and adsorption) of Brazil nuts, fitting different mathematical models to the experimental data, as well as to examine the hysteresis effect. ABSTRACT Knowledge on the water sorption within agricultural products is extremely important for decision making during post-harvest procedures. In order to improve this knowledge, thermodynamic properties regarding water sorption provide useful data. Thermodynamic properties of castor beans, related to sorption, were determined. Static gravimetric technique under different conditions of temperature (25, 35, 45 and 55 ± 1 °C) was used. Saturated salt solutions in the range of 37-87% ± 2% were utilized to create the required controlled humidity environment. After the sorption procedure, differential enthalpy, differential entropy and Gibbs free energy of this process were calculated and decreased with increased values of equilibrium moisture content.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to determine the effect of moisture content on rupture strength, maximum strength, and rupture deformation for fixed deformations, and determine the proportional deformation modulus of seeds of Raphanus sativus subjected to compressive loading. Seeds with a moisture concentration of 0.31, 0.18, 0.12, 0.08, and 0.05 decimal (dry basis, d.b.) were maintained in the natural resting position and were subjected to uniaxial compressive loading between two parallel plates at an application rate of 0.002 m s-1. Comparison between THE oven and THE Karl Fischer methodS for THE determination of the moisture content of maize (Zea mays L.) and soya (Glycine max (L) Merrill) seeds Scientia Agricola

The objective of the present paper was to compare the seed water content of maize and soya, obtained by the oven method at different temperatures and the Karl Fischer method. The water contents used were 11.2 %, 12.8 % and 16.2 % for maize and 10.7 %, 12.4 % and 16.0 % for soya. Samples were dried for a sufficiently long time in order to obtain the same results in both methods. The results indicate that the official method for seed moisture determination (105oC oven method) should be revised in order to obtain more reliable results. The drying time in the oven varied according to the seed water content and the temperature used.
