Morphological variability of the shape of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus in relation to stock discrimination between the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Vaz, Sandrine; Coppin, Franck; Koubbi, Philippe; Carpentier, Andre.
Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus L. 1758 is an economically important species in the Mediterranean Sea and in the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it is exploited from the Bay of Biscay to the southern North Sea (ICES, 2010). In Atlantic waters, there are two main areas where this species is caught, the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel. This species was initially exploited by the Spanish fleets along the Spanish coast inside the Bay of Biscay. Originally considered as valuable by-catch (Marchal, 2008), the growing exploitation ofM. surmuletus and a conspicuous increase in landings in the English Channel and the southern North Sea by French, English and Dutch fleets have been observed from the 1990s onwards. This was attributed to an increase...

Diet is correlated with otolith shape in marine fish ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine; Mahe, Kelig; Cachera, Marie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; De Pontual, Helene; Ernande, Bruno.
Previous studies have shown that food amount influence fish otolith structure, opacity and shape and that diet composition has an effect on otolith chemical composition. This study investigated the potential correlation between diet and otolith shape in 5 wild marine fish species by addressing 4 complementary questions. First, is there a global relationship between diet and otolith shape? Second, which prey categories are involved in this relationship? Third, what are the respective contributions of food quantity and relative composition to diet–otolith shape co-variation? Fourth, is diet energetic composition related to otolith shape? For each species, we investigated how otolith shape varies with diet. These questions were tackled by describing diet in...

Histochemistry and Morphometric Analysis of Muscle Fibers from Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) International Journal of Morphology
Cavalcanti,George Maciel; Oliveira,André de Sá Braga; Assis,Thiago de Oliveira; Chimelli,Leila Maria Cardão; Medeiros,Paloma Lys de; Mota,Diógenes Luís da.
The aim of the study was to analyze the muscle fibers by histochemistry and morphometric methods from patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Muscle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis muscle of five boys between 13 and 15-years of age, with clinical diagnosis of DMD. The histochemistry was performed using myofibrillar ATPases (9.6, 4.6 and 4.3). To morphometrical analysis a computerized semiautomatic system and software Image-Lab was used. ATPase staining showed atrophy of muscle fibers. Fibrosis and adipose deposition occurred in variable degree depending of muscular involvement. The morphometrical analysis showed an increase of size (percentage) to type I fiber than other types in all patients. Furthermore, the type I fiber had a...

Maternal Chronic Stress Induces Premature Telencephalic Vesicles Development International Journal of Morphology
Mugnaini,María Teresa; Soñez,Carlos Alberto; Rolando,Alicia Nélida; Romanini,María Cristina; Bozzo,Aída Andrea; Pastorino,Isabel Cecilia; Gauna,Héctor Fernando; Paz,Dante Agustín.
Exposure to physical or psychological stress causes brain damage ranging from minimal behavioural alterations to different neurodegeneration degrees implying the overproduction of oxidative-nitrosative compounds, apoptosis and cell proliferation. In the present investigation, we have analysed the effect of the chronic stress by immobilisation applied to pregnant rats over the forebrain development of the embryos. The morphometric analyses showed an accelerated evagination of the telencephalic vesicles in 12 days old fetus from stressed mothers. The forebrain perimeter and the thickness showed significative differences in relation to age-matched controls. This stress effect seemed reversible during subsequent gestational stages. This is the first work...

The objective of this study was to report the distinctive anatomical and histological features of the trachea of the Arabian Oryx (Oryx leucoryx). The number of tracheal rings and tracheal length were measured. The diameter, thickness and cross sectional area of tracheal ring were determined at four tracheal regions (cranial cervical (CCR), middle cervical, thoracic inlets and intra thoracic). Tracheal rings were also collected for histological analysis. The mean length of the trachea was 54.1cm ± 0.73, while the number of tracheal rings varied from 50-51. Tracheal ring measurements (diameter, thickness and cross sectional area) were smallest at the thoracic inlet region. The ratio of the outer transverse to outer vertical and inner transverse to inner...

Morphometric analysis of extant Nephrops norvegicus (Linné, 1758) and Solenocera membranacea (Risso, 1826) applied to systematic palaeontology of fossil decapod crustaceans Naturalis
Damiano, Giuseppina; Garassino, Alessandro; Scali, Stefano; Teruzzi, Giorgio.
The study of fossil decapods have shown the need for reliable statistics to document the value of the characters considered. Morphometric data, however, are usually absent in scientific papers on living decapod crustaceans since neontological systematists normally analyze internal organs and tissues not available in fossils. A series of morphometric data for two extant species have been processed statistically in order to obtain numerical models that could be applied to fossil species showing morphological affinities.

Castes and asynchronous colony cycle in Polybia bistriata (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) Neotropical Entomology
Oliveira,Otavio A.L. de; Noll,Fernando B.; Mateus,Sidnei; Gomes,Bruno.
Neotropical swarm-founding wasps, the Epiponini, are an outstanding group of social insects whose societies are polygynic and complex nest builders. Caste dimorphism in these wasps ranges from incipient to highly distinct. Morphometric analyses of nine body parts, ovarian status, relative age and development of the 5th gastral sternite gland (Richards´ gland) of Polybia bistriata Fabricius were undertaken in order to estimate caste differentiation in nine colonies. Morphological and physiological data were used in multivariate analyses in order to evaluate the level of discrimination between inseminated and non-inseminated females. Clear physiological differences were found: queens had highly developed ovaries and they were inseminated, and workers had...

Morphological and genetic perspectives of hybridization in two contact zones of closely related species of Petunia (Solanaceae) in southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Teixeira,Marcelo C.; Turchetto,Caroline; Hartke,Sara; Schnitzler,Carolina K.; Freitas,Loreta B..
ABSTRACT Interspecific hybridization has several consequences for parental species, from blurring species limits to the emergence of new taxa. Petunia axillaris and P. exserta occur in sympatry in southernmost Brazil and naturally hybridize despite their different pollination syndromes and habitat requirements. We employed genetic and morphological analyses to characterize two contact zones between the species with the aim of determining the effect of interspecific hybridization. Microsatellite loci and a morphometric evaluation of the corolla shape were used to classify individuals based on their origin as pure parental or hybrids. Corolla color was used to classify individuals a priori (white, red or intermediate, for P. axillaris, P. exserta or hybrid,...

Structural features of the epididymal region of the domestic duck (Anas plathyrynchos) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Simões,Karina; Orsi,Antônio Marcos; Artoni,Silvana Martinez Baraldi; Cruz,Claudinei da; Schimming,Bruno César; Pinheiro,Patrícia Fernanda Felipe.
The epididymal region of the domestic duck is composed by efferent ductules, whose histotopology was characterized by the proximal and distal ductules and sequentially by the epididymal duct. The epithelial lining of the efferent ductules was ciliated pseudostratified and formed by columnar cells. Also the ducts epididymidis epithelium was pseudostratified but non-ciliated. Concerning the histomorphometric analysis, the epithelial height mean was significantly greater in the distal efferent ductules, differing from the lower epithelium height mean observed in proximal efferent ductules and epididymal duct. The maximum and minimum diameter mean were significantly greater in the proximal efferent ductules, comparatively to the same diameter means of the...

Morphometric changes in the hoof capsule of Criollo foals from birth to weaning Ciência Rural
Souza,João Ricardo Malheiros de; Pimentel,Anelise Maria Hammes; Folle,Vinícius Azevedo; Pfeifer,João Pedro Hübbe; Schuster,Aline Bacchieri Gallo; Segabinazzi,Lorenzo Garrido Teixeira Martini; Lau,Lucas Correa; Martins,Charles Ferreira.
ABSTRACT: South America has numerous Criollo horse breeding farms; however, information on foal hoof growth is still limited and identifying the ideal periods to apply corrective trimming is a frequent concern for horse owners. In the present study, a morphometric analysis of hoof growth was performed on 46 Criollo foals from birth to weaning (0-8 months). Results showed that hoof growth rate was higher in the first four months followed by a decrease until the eighth month. Average growth rate of the hoof was 0.21cm per month, whereas that of the heel was 0.14cm per month. However, no significant differences were observed between medial and lateral heel length or between limbs. Coronary band perimeter and solar width showed an average increase of 0.97cm...
