The midgut of adult female Anopheles aquasalis presents a narrow anterior or thoracic region and a distensible posterior or abdominal region constituted by the epithelium formed by a cell layer whose apical portion presents microvilli and the basal portion, a basal labyrinth. The thoracic region revealed heterogeneous cellular staining affinity mainly by the presence of acidic components. The ultrastructural aspect showed columnar cells with the presence of the vesicle, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and secreting cells. The abdominal region of the midgut revealed an irregular epithelium whose cells presented a basophilic cytoplasm and acidophil granules. Temperature Effects on the Immature Development Time of Culex eduardoi Casal & García (Diptera: Culicidae)

The effect of constant temperatures on the development time from first instar to adult emergence was studied in Culex eduardoi Casal & García reared at 7, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 33°C. Data were adjusted to the linear degree-day model and the nonlinear Briére model. According to the linear model, the development time was inversely related to the rearing temperatures between 7°C and 25°C. Maximum mortality (100%) was recorded at temperatures > 30°C. According to the linear model, the development threshold temperature and thermal constant were 5.7°C and 188.8 degree days, respectively. The lower and upper threshold temperatures and the optimum temperature for the nonlinear model were -2.3, 30.0 and 28.1°C, respectively.

Na busca por controle químico alternativo contra Aedes aegypti L., muitas pesquisas são desenvolvidas e estimuladas no intuito de se descobrirem novas substâncias inseticidas de origem vegetal. Neste trabalho, o efeito larvicida de dez óleos essenciais foi avaliado contra A. aegypti. Os óleos foram obtidos por arraste a vapor e sua composição química foi determinada por cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massa. Os óleos essenciais foram diluídos em solução aquosa de dimetil sufóxido nas concentrações: 100, 50, 10 e 1 mg/ml. A atividade larvicida, baseada na percentagem de larvas mortas, foi avaliada 24h após o tratamento. This is the first report of the occurrence of Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann in Isla Fuerte, Colombia. Twelve female mosquitoes were collected using an illuminated Shannon trap in a peridomestic environment of the island. The epidemiological relevance of this finding is discussed.

The mosquito-repelling devices Anti-Pic®, Mosquito Repeller® DX-600 and Bye-Bye Mosquito® were evaluated in boxes for experimentation by exposing human hands to Aedes albopictus (Skuse) adults. Two sets of tests were performed based on 15 min. expositions. In the first set both hands were introduced in the box, one of them holding the device on. In the second set only one hand was introduced each time, holdind the device on or off. The devices failed to show efficiency in both evaluations. A seemingly 30.3% repellency due to Anti-Pic® in the first set of experiments was not confirmed in the second set. It was discussed the value of such devices for dengue prevention.

Se describe la morfología del cibario en ocho especies de Psorophora Robineau-Desvoidy: Ps. (Grabhamia) cingulata (Fabricius), Ps. (Gra.) confinnis (Lynch Arribálzaga), Ps. MosquiTRAP™ is a sticky trap specifically designed to capture gravid females of Aedes aegypti (L.) and allows the identification of the mosquito in the field during the inspection of the trap. This study aims to compare this sticky trap to larval and ovitrap surveys for field monitoring of A. aegypti during the dry season. The study was conducted from March to June of 2003 in 20 blocks of the district of Itapoã, Belo Horizonte, MG. Avaliou-se a abundância e agregação dos ovos de Aedes aegypti L. e Aedes albopictus Skuse em Cambé, Ibiporã, Jacarezinho, Maringá e Paranavaí, PR, utilizando-se armadilhas de oviposição. De 225 armadilhas instaladas, 100 registraram-se positivas para ovos. Coletaram-se 4140 ovos, demonstrando distribuição altamente agregada. Ambas as espécies foram encontradas em Cambé, Jacarezinho, Maringá e Paranavaí. Ae. albopictus não foi detectado em Ibiporã, porém onde esteve presente foi menos abundante. A relação entre sexos aproximou-se de 1:1, para Ae. aegypti. A composição de Culicidae do lago de Barra Grande, situado entre os municípios de Esmeralda (Rio Grande do Sul) e Anita Garibaldi (Santa Catarina), foi realizada com coletas mensais. Vinte e quatro espécies foram identificadas dentre um total de 1.185 espécimes (74,7% adultos e 25,3% imaturos), sendo Aedes fluviatilis Lutz a espécie mais frequente. Algumas espécies constituem novos registros e são interesse em saúde pública. O fato sugere que mudanças ambientais na área podem alterar a relação entre humanos e mosquitos vetores.

The effects of cyclic temperatures on Aedes albopictus Skuse development, longevity, gonotrophic cycle and the number of oviposited eggs were assessed by means of laboratory experiments. Cell hypertrophy was the first reaction of the gut epithelial cells of Aedes aegypti (L.), Anopheles albitarsis (Lynch-Arribálzaga) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) to the toxins of strains 2362 and S1116 of Bacillus sphaericus, as cells had an increase of intracellular secretory activity. The present study investigates new sources of infusion as an oviposition attractant for Aedes aegypti L. Infusions with fetid and non-fetid odors were compared as an oviposition stimulant. Traps baited with infusions of dehydrated cashew leaves (Anacardium occidentale), potato peels (Solanum tuberosum) and graminea (Panicum maximum) were compared as attractants, and the effect of odor (fetid and unfetid) on attractiveness was tested. However, it has been suggested that the colony insects are not representative of natural populations, sometimes yealding to erroneous interpretations of the intraspecific genetic variation between the individuals.
