Demographic Factors Affecting the Adoption of Multiple Value-Added Practices by Oklahoma Cow-Calf Producers AgEcon
Williams, Brian R.; Raper, Kellie Curry; DeVuyst, Eric A.; Peel, Derrell S.; Lalman, David L.; Richards, Chris; Doye, Damona G..
The utilization of marketing programs to enhance feeder calf value has been met with modest success in Oklahoma. Value-added programs are continually promoted as avenues for improving cow-calf profitability, but producer adoption of value-added practices lags in spite of research showing the value of these practices. Identifying producer characteristics that increase their likelihood to adopt value-added practices is critical to developing successful outreach efforts. Results from a survey of Oklahoma producers on value-added practice adoption indicate that multiple demographic variables influence a producer’s likelihood of practice adoption. For Extension specialists, results can help in targeting likely adopters and developing methods to overcome...

Location Determinants of Food Manufacturing Investment: Are Non-metropolitan Counties Competitive? AgEcon
Lambert, Dayton M.; McNamara, Kevin T.; Beeler, Megan I..
Food manufacturing site selection is determined by infrastructure, agglomeration, product and input markets, labor markets, and fiscal attributes of local communities. This article examines how these factors influence location decisions across the rural-urban continuum in the lower forty-eight states of the U.S. Negative binomial regression and spatial clustering methods are used to forecast new food processor location patterns at the county level, 2000-2004. Remote rural areas are at a comparative disadvantage with respect to attracting food processors, but non-metropolitan counties with economic links to urban core areas may be attractive investment sites for footloose, supply, and demand-oriented food manufacturers.

Clustering of psychiatric and somatic illnesses in the general population: multimorbidity and socioeconomic correlates BJMBR
Andrade,L.H.; Benseñor,I.M.; Viana,M.C.; Andreoni,S.; Wang,Y.-P..
The distribution of psychiatric disorders and of chronic medical illnesses was studied in a population-based sample to determine whether these conditions co-occur in the same individual. A representative sample (N = 1464) of adults living in households was assessed by the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, version 1.1, as part of the São Paulo Epidemiological Catchment Area Study. The association of sociodemographic variables and psychological symptoms regarding medical illness multimorbidity (8 lifetime somatic conditions) and psychiatric multimorbidity (15 lifetime psychiatric disorders) was determined by negative binomial regression. A total of 1785 chronic medical conditions and 1163 psychiatric conditions were detected in the population...
