This paper deals about the nematocysts like a source of biometric information for comparison between the species Hydra vulgaris Pallas, 1766, Hydra vulgaris pedunculata Deserti et al., 2011 and Hydra pseudoligactis (Hyman, 1931). This biometric tool lets us carry out statistical comparisons and adding these results to the identification of specimens from different classificatory groups. In this particular study, we obtained significant differences between species, individuals of each species and nematocysts type when compared the biometry of its nematocysts. Another result was the variation in of particular nematocysts, like atrichous isorhiza and holotrichous isorhiza for the species H. vulgaris in relation to the column size. |

Structural characteristics of discharged and undischarged nematocysts from the hydrozoans Millepora alcicornis and Millepora complanata, two fire corals collected in the Mexican Caribbean, were examined using transmission electron, scanning and light microscopy. In this study, we report for the first time images of the nematocysts found in these Mexican Caribbean venomous species. Two types of nematocysts were observed in both species, the more abundant identified as macrobasic mastigophore and the other a stenotele type. Macrobasic mastigophores were present in medium and large size classes while stenoteles appeared in only one size. |

Eudendrium pocaruquarum, a new species of athecate hydroid referable to the family Eudendriidae, is described from the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The species is very similar to the widespread Eudendrium ramosum (Linnaeus, 1758), differing from it in the smaller size of the large microbasic euryteles. Longstanding problems in the systematics of eudendriid hydroids are noted, and the inadequacies of many early descriptions of species are discussed. The nematocysts provide a supplementary character for discrimination of species of Eudendrium, although information on the cnidome appears to have been sometimes misinterpreted in literature. |

Bunodes biscayensis Fischer, 1874, a species of Actiniaria described from Moulleau, Arcachon, south-western coast of France, and never recorded since, was rediscovered in July 1985 and found again in 1986 and 1987 in several localities along the French "Côte Basque" between the mouth of the river Adour and St. Jean-de-Luz. The species is here redescribed and referred to Bunodosoma Verrill, 1899, a genus of tropical and subtropical Atlantic and West-American intertidal and shallow water forms, hitherto not recorded from the Mediterranean and/or the Atlantic coast of Europe. Speculations are advanced as to the possible further distribution of B. biscayensis. A discussion is added concerning the morphological terms verruca and vesicle. The study is completed... |

Species of Corallimorpharia collected during the CANCAP expeditions in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic are described and discussed, altogether five species belonging to three genera of Corallimorphidae: the shallow water forms Corynactis viridis Allman, 1846, Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum den Hartog, 1980, and P. caboverdensis spec. nov., and the deep-sea forms Corallimorphus cf. atlanticus Carlgren, 1934, and C. ingens Gravier, 1918. The taxonomic status of the representatives of the genus Corynactis Allman, 1846, is discussed. All temperate to subtropical species described so far belong to a group of closely related allopatric taxa forming the Corynactis viridis-complex, possibly representing a single species only. The colours of Corynactis... |

Since the study of the genus Corallimorphus was started, the main taxonomic character used to separate species has been the ratio of the number of marginal tentacles to that of the discal ones. Polyps with a marginal:discal (m:d) tentacle ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 collected by the “Challenger” expedition were described as two distinct species, Corallimorphus rigidus and Corallimorphus profundus respectively (Moseley, 1877a, 1877b; Hertwig, 1882, 1888). This feature remained important in the taxonomy of the genus. For example, Fautin et al. (2002) subdivided the genus Corallimorphus into two groups of species: Corallimorphus rigidus, C. ingens, C. atlanticus, C. denhartogi (ratio of marginal: discal tentacles 2:1) were referred to the «rigidus» group. C.... |

Three species of the actinian genus Telmatactis Gravier, 1916, viz. T. forskalii (Ehrenberg, 1834), T. solidago (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) and T. cricoides (Duchassaing, 1850), occurring in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, are described and discussed. Detailed data on the cnidom of the three species are provided. The characteristic penicilli of members of the genus Telmatactis are discussed. These penicilli were classified by Schmidt (1969, 1972) as p-rhabdoids (= penicilli) B1b, but it is here claimed that they actually belong in Schmidt's B2 group (provisionally as penicilli B2c). They correspond in general form and as to their distribution in the actinian polyp with the more usual penicilli B2a sensu Schmidt (1969), but unlike these, they... |

A small collection of four species of Actiniaria, partly representing new records for Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, is described and discussed. These four species are: Bunodeopsis strumosa Andres, 1881, Edwardsia claparedii (Panceri, 1869), Actinia cari delle Chiaje, 1825, and Phymanthus pulcher (Andres, 1883). |

Seabather's eruption is a papulo-pruritic dermatitis caused by the nematocysts of the larvae of the jellyfish Linuche unguiculata retained in the clothing fibers. Previously reported in Brazil, this work describes fourteen cases that occurred in the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The new cases observed over a short period of time (the first half of January, 2012), at the height of the summer season, should alert health teams to possible epidemics on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina. |
