Performance of juveniles of Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum fed graded levels of corn gluten meal PAB
Bicudo,Álvaro José de Almeida; Borghesi,Ricardo; Dairiki,Jony Koji; Sado,Ricardo Yuji; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The objective of this work was to evaluate corn gluten meal (CGM) as a substitute for fish meal in diets for striped catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) juveniles. Eight isonitrogenous (46% crude protein) and isoenergetic (3,450 kcal kg-1 digestible energy) diets, with increasing levels of CGM - 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, and 42% -, were fed to juvenile striped catfish (113.56±5.10 g) for seven weeks. Maximum values for weight gain, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio and feed conversion ratio, evaluated by polynomial quadratic regression, were observed with 10.4, 11.4, 15.4 and 15% of CGM inclusion, respectively. Feed intake decreased significantly from 0.8% CGM. Mesenteric fat index and body gross energy decreased linearly with increasing...

Biogeographical aspects of drosophilids (Diptera, Drosophilidae) of the Brazilian savanna Rev. Bras. entomol.
Chaves,Natália Barbi; Tidon,Rosana.
Some species of drosophilids have been intensely studied, especially in the areas of genetics and molecular biology. However, little is known about their ecology and biogeography. Here, we revise the records of Drosophilidae species in the Cerrado domain, in order to organize the available information and to recognize patterns of geographic distribution and endemism. The 43 sampled sites in this domain reveal 100 species of drosophilids (10 of them exotic to the Neotropical region), distributed in eight genera. The collections were concentrated mainly in the States of Goiás (including the Federal District) and Minas Gerais. Serra do Cipó is the site with the highest richness of these insects. Of the 90 neotropical species found in the Cerrado, 77 also...

Ontogenesis and functional morphology of the digestive system of the freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium amazonicum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Queiroz,Luciano D.; Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Maciel,Cristiana R..
The appropriate feeding regime for larvae and post-larvae of crustacean decapods is essential for successful larval culture. Reports on the development and morphology of the mouthparts and foregut of these crustaceans have aided in the selection of appropriate larval foodstuffs and consequently increased larval survival and growth rate during development. In the present study, the functional morphology of foregut and mouthparts was investigated in larvae and post-larvae of the freshwater prawn M. amazonicum (Heller, 1862). From observations gathered on both the outer and inner feeding apparati the first stage larvae have obligatory lecithotrophy and feeding behaviour is initiated after molting to the second stage. The foregut of the larvae undergoes...

Pollen morphology of the genera Irlbachia, Tachia, Voyria and Voyriella (Gentianaceae Juss.) found in the Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke (Amazonas, Brazil) Acta Botanica
Ferreira,Marcos Gonçalves; Absy,Maria Lúcia; Gonçalves-Esteves,Vânia.
A pollen morphology study of the Gentianaceae Juss. of Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke (Manaus, Brazil) was performed. The pollen grains of the studied species varied morphologically in their pollen units (tetrads or monads), size (small, medium and large), shape (oblate, suboblate, oblate spheroidal, spheroidal, prolate spheroidal and prolate), polarity (heteropolar, isopolar or subisopolar), symmetry (bilateral or radial) and number and type of aperture (3-colporate and 1-3porate). In relation to ornamentation, pollen grains had a sexine that was psilate in the Voyria species, microreticulate in Voyriella parviflora and reticulate heterobrochate in Tachia grandiflora and Irlbachia alata. The exine in I. alata showed great variability in the size and...

Acute toxicity of sodium metabisulphite on mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Decapoda, Ucididae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pedale,Adriana B.; Fujimoto,Rodrigo Y.; Santos,Rudã F.B.; Abrunhosa,Fernando A..
The sodium metabisulphite salt is usually used in shrimp culture to prevent black spot. Unfortunately the toxicological effect of this xenobiotic in decapod crabs is unknown. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the sodium metabisulphite LC50 - 96 h in the mangrove species Ucides cordatus. Crabs were collected in the tidal creek margins in Bragança estuarine and were submitted to preliminary test (screening) and posterior definitive test. Crabs were exposed in five different concentrations and a control group in five replicates, two crabs per recipient (5 L) during 96 hours. A negative correlation was observed to sodium metabisulphite concentration in relation to dissolved oxygen and pH. At the end of the experiment were obtained the following...
