Measuring nutrients fluxes in watersheds with different landuse is important for evaluating the effects of conversion of native forests to agricultural land, and for establishing guidelines for land management. Nitrogen (N) concentrations and fluxes were studied over a 12-month period in four watersheds in the Lake Rupanco basin in the Andean Cordillera and four watersheds located in the Lake Huillinco basin in the Coastal Cordillera of southern Chile. Two watersheds in either lake basins were covered mainly by native rainforests, and the other two had mixed landuse (livestock pastures, subsistence agriculture and shrub-pasture mixtures). The growth in federal conservation programs has created a need for policy modeling frameworks capable of measuring micro-level behavioral responses and macro-level landscape changes. This paper presents an empirical model that predicts crop choices, crop rotations, and conservation tillage adoption as a function of conservation payment levels, profits, and other variables at more than 42,000 agricultural sites of the National Resource Inventory (NRI) in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. Predicted changes in crop choices and tillage practices are then fed into site-specific environmental production functions to determine changes in nitrate runoff and leaching and in water and wind erosion at each NRI site. Nitrogen discharge into the Waikato River has been identified as the primary source of potential water quality degradation. Rising nitrogen levels in water are attributed to non point source pollution from agricultural activities. Pastoral farming is the predominant agricultural land use in the catchment. Increased nitrogen fertilizer use and higher stocking rates have the potential to increase the nitrogen loading into water. There is a range of best management practices and policies proposed to reduce nitrogen discharge from farming systems.
