Simulated decadal variability of the Meridional Overturning Circulation across the A25-Ovide section ArchiMer
Desbruyeres, Damien; Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle.
Decadal changes of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) at the A25-Ovide section between Portugal and Greenland are investigated in a numerical simulation forced by atmospheric reanalysis data for the period 1965-2004. The intensity, composition and structure of the upper MOC limb are assessed using a Lagrangian analysis tool. Its mean transport is fed by water masses of two distinct origins: the subtropics and the Labrador Sea. Two vertical overturning cells are consequently identified: a subtropical cell connecting low and high latitudes (12 Sv) and a cell internal to the subpolar gyre (4 Sv). The decadal MOC variability is associated with synchronized transport changes of the subtropical and subpolar inflow within the North Atlantic Current...

Les Eaux Modales du gyre subpolaire de l'Atlantique Nord : origine, formation, variabilité ArchiMer
De Boisseson, Eric.
The subpolar Mode Waters of the North Atlantic ocean play a key role in the general oceanic surface circulation. Their life cycle has only been described from an average of observations over several decades. This description avoids the real time scale of this life cycle and smooths its variaribility. It also does not adress the setting the Mode Water properties. This thesis work deals with these aspects by analysing both the ORCA025-G70 model fields and the observations. The lagrangian analysis of the ORCA025-G70 fields highlights the key role of the North Atlantic current in the life cycle of the Mode Waters. The Mode Waters are fed and carried by this current. They form during the winter mixed layer deepening due to the surface atmospheric fluxes. The...

Origin, formation and variability of the Subpolar Mode Water located over the Reykjanes Ridge ArchiMer
De Boisseson, Eric; Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle; Caniaux, G.; Desbruyeres, Damien.
The origin and formation of the Subpolar Mode Water (SPMW) located over the Reykjanes Ridge in the North-Atlantic Ocean and the variability of its properties over the period 1966-2004 are investigated through the use of a global eddy-permitting (1/4 degrees) ocean/sea-ice model and a Lagrangian analysis tool. The SPMW is fed by subtropical and subpolar waters advected by the branches of the North-Atlantic Current. The SPMW acquires its properties when its source waters enter the winter mixed layer in the Iceland Basin. The SPMW temperature variability is mainly explained by variations of the relative contributions of the subtropical and subpolar water transports to the total transport. Compared to the 1966-2004 mean, lower (higher) subtropical water...
