| Chlorophyll-a (Chl a) is a key parameter for the assessment of water quality in coastal and shelf environments. | The abundance and spatial occupation of European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus have increased in the North Sea since the mid-1990s. We use a cross-disciplinary approach combining genetics, transport modelling, survey time series analyses and physical oceanographic modelling to investigate 3 hypotheses on the reasons for this change. Evidence from connectivity studies suggests that the population of North Sea anchovy is separate from that in the Bay of Biscay. | Since 1976, France participates to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), coordinated by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The main objective of these surveys, which are carried out on board of research vessels, was to obtain annual forecasts of recruitment for the various commercial fish species of the North Sea. These estimates were used by ICES Working Groups to assess these various stocks and to propose management measures for the following year. Observations from the eastern Mediterranean (North Aegean Sea), the Bay of Biscay and the North Sea reveal latitudinal differences in growth, maximum size, fecundity and timing of reproduction. | Connectivity between spawning and nursery grounds influences the colonization, replenishment and resilience of populations of marine organisms. Connectivity rate, measured as the exchange of individuals between spawning and nursery grounds, is therefore a crucial determinant of stock size. | This study examines whether meso-scale meteorological events, in particular the alternation of cold and mild periods, influenced the structure of four Abi cr alba communities, sampled from 1977 to 1992 on the northwest French coast. We propose a new numerical procedure to describe temporal variations in the structure of each assemblage, using some niche-oriented models recently developed by Tokeshi (1993).
