ABSTRACT this research aimed to evaluate the residual effect of doses of organic compost on the radish production, as well as its effect on soil chemical properties. experiments were conducted in two areas (“low” and “high” soil fertility). prior to this, these areas were first used to evaluate the influence of organic compost doses on endive production. after harvesting endive, radish seeds were sown into the same plots used for endive to evaluate the residual effect. the six treatments consisted of organic compost doses (0, 35, 70, 105, 140 and 175 t ha-1), evaluated in a complete block experimental design, with four replications. vegetative characteristics of radish plants (shoot, root and total fresh and dry matter weight, plant height and root... |

Plant nutrition is one of the most important factors for successful cultivation of tomatoes, especially in the greenhouse, and Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) is an alternative for fertilizer recommendation. This study aimed to establish DRIS norms for tomato plants growing in greenhouse located at Norte Pioneiro do Paraná region (Paraná State, Brazil). Chemical analysis of nutrients on leaves (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) of hybrid tomatoes (Colibri, Pizzadoro, Debora Max and Granadero), and respective yields of 61 growing areas in greenhouses (24.4 ha) were used. Samples were collected during April to December 2010, in five cities. Five levels of tomato yield (6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 kg plant-1) were used for establishing a... |

In situ measurements of Mg/Ca, Zn/Ca, Mn/Ca, and Ba/Ca in Globigerinoides bulloides and Globigerina ruber from southwest Pacific core top sites and plankton tow are reported and their potential as paleoproxies is explored. The modern samples cover 20 degrees of latitude from 34 degrees S to 54 degrees S, 7-19 degrees C water temperature, and variable influence of subantarctic (SAW) and subtropical (STW) surface waters. Trace element signatures recorded in core top and plankton tow planktic foraminifera are examined in the context of the chemistry and nutrient profiles of their modern water masses. Our observations suggest that Zn/Ca and Mn/Ca may have the potential to trace SAW and STW. Intraspecies and interspecies offsets identified by in situ... |

A study was conducted in Arcachon Bay, France, to determine the effect of seasonal dynamics in a Zostera noltii meadow on P and Fe cycles in the superficial sediments of a tidal mudflat. The redox-sensitive Fe particulate pool and associated P in the root zone showed a seasonal variation following the growth and decay of Z. noltii biomass, with a maximum content during the growth period. In comparison, the bare sediments did not show significant seasonal changes. A dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) uptake was measured from the water column to the sediment in vegetated sediments, whereas a net DIP efflux was observed in the unvegetated sediments. During the growth period, the formation of an iron oxihydroxide-rich zone occurred and acted as a trap for... |

One approach to the problem of aquaculture consists in a simple acceleration of natural processes in extended areas of salt or brackish water. From this point of view, the authors have been interested in the effect of moderate fertilization on natural communities . A first series of experiments (8) was made in an external tank of 3000 liters. After fertilization, the development of flowering diatoms was obtained each time. The time of latency, the level of production reached, the composition of the final communities is to some extent variable, but bacterial development may be neglected. In contrast to earlier results, obtained in small volumes of water, these experiments have always led to simplified communities mostly dominated by the diatom... |

The Mediterranean Sea (MS) is a semi-enclosed sea characterized by a zonal west-east gradient of oligotrophy, where microbial growth is controlled by phosphate availability in most situations. External inputs of nutrients including Gibraltar inputs, river inputs and atmospheric deposition are therefore of major importance for the biogeochemistry of the MS. This has long been considered to be driven mainly by nutrient exchanges at Gibraltar. However, recent studies indicate that river inputs signi cantly a ect nutrients concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea, although their resulting impact on its biogeochemistry remains poorly understood. In this study, our aim was to make good this lack by addressing the large-scale and long-term impact of variations in... |

Modern instruments together with the use of standard reference materials have improved the accuracy and long-term reproducibility of the analysis of nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate) in sea water using segmented-flow analysis, so that errors arising from matrix effects become more significant. Colorimetric detectors with bubble-through flowcells have become widely used for seawater analysis in recent years and their associated matrix effects are described. A re-examination of all categories of matrix effects, whose main origin is salinity, was thus undertaken to assess how much they are liable to alter the data. Interferences were classified into four types, each of which was examined in order to show its influence on the... |

Improved comparability of nutrient concentrations in seawater is required to enhance the quality and utility of measurements reported to global databases. Significant progress has been made over recent decades in improving the analysis and data quality for traditional laboratory measurements of nutrients. Similar efforts are required to establish high-quality data outputs from in situ nutrient sensors, which are rapidly becoming integral components of ocean observing systems. This paper suggests using the good practices routine established for laboratory reference methods to propose a harmonized set of deployment protocols and of quality control procedures for nutrient measurements obtained from in situ sensors. These procedures are intended to establish a... |
