NITROGEN FLUXES IN THROUGHFALL AND LITTERFALL IN TWO NOTHOFAGUS FORESTS IN SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica
Staelens,Jeroen; Godoy,Roberto; Oyarzún,Carlos; Thibo,Karen; Verheyen,Kris.
Nitrogen return by leaf litterfall was compared with atmospheric nitrogen deposition for two deciduous Nothofagus stands in southern Chile, located in areas with contrasting land use. The litterfall return of nitrogen in a Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. et Endl.) Oerst. stand at San Pablo de Tregua, in the Cordillera de los Andes, was similar to the litterfall return in a Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Oerst. stand at Paillaco, in the Central Depression. In contrast, the net throughfall and stemflow deposition differed significantly between the two stands. At San Pablo de Tregua, the annual bulk deposition of NH4+ and NO3- was significantly higher than the throughfall and stemflow deposition reaching the forest floor. This demonstrates an uptake of inorganic...

SEASONAL VARIATION IN LEAF LITTER NUTRIENT CONCENTRATIONS OF VALDIVIAN RAINFOREST TREES Gayana Botánica
Lusk,Christopher H.; Matus,Francisco; Moreno-Chacón,María; Saldaña,Alfredo; Jiménez-Castillo,Mylthon.
Resorption of nutrients from senescing tissues is an important aspect of the nutrient economy of perennial plants, and a major influence on ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Attempts to interpret the adaptive significance of variation in nutrient resorption efficiency have met with little success, leading some scientists to emphasize the need for more work on the biochemical and physiological basis of resorption. One hypothesis suggests than variation in resorption is controlled by sink-source effects within the plant. According to this hypothesis, we might expect resorption to be positively correlated with plant growth rates. This could be expected not only for comparisons among species or populations, but also when comparing conspecific individuals growing at...

Torres,José LR; Ciabotti,Elaine D; Gomes,Fernando RC; Leal Junior,André LB; Vieira,Dinamar MS; Costa,Luciene L.
ABSTRACT Cauliflower and cabbage require high amounts of nutrients in short periods of time; however, the intensive use of inorganic fertilizers can cause nutritional imbalances in these crops and reduce the quality of the final product. This study evaluated the chemical composition and yield of no-till cauliflower and cabbage grown on residues of various cover crops in Uberaba, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four cover crops (sunn hemp, brachiaria, pearl millet and fallow) and two main crops (cauliflower and cabbage). The treatments were evaluated on plots of 20 m2 with four replications. The following traits were analyzed after harvest: moisture (MO), ash (ASH), lipid (LIP), crude fiber (CF), protein (PTN),...

Seagrass ecosystems IBSS Repository
Phillips, R. C.; Milchakova, N. A..
The seagrass ecosystem is defined as a unit of biological organization comprised of interacting biotic and abiotic components. The structural components are shelter and food and feeding pathways and biodiversity. Functional components include the rate of nutrient cycling, the rate of energy flow, and biological regulation. Healthy intact seagrass ecosystems provide services since they relate to the health, stability and well-being of the environment in which they live, but also to that of human populations.

Os grandes ciclos biogeoquímicos do planeta. Infoteca-e
ADUAN, R. E.; VILELA, M. de F.; REIS JUNIOR, F. B. dos.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this work was to present in a didactic way the biogeochemical cycles of the four most important elements and substances on global chemistry: water, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous. The importance of these elements and substances becomes from the great magnitude of mass and energy utilized in their processes, and on their essentiality on biosphere formation and maintenance. This work intends to showthe interdependence between these great cycles and the biosphere, and the way that the human activity influences on the chemical dynamic of the globe, and the consequences of these shifts for the humanity itself.

Influence of shellfish farming activities on the biogeochemical composition of the water column in Thau lagoon ArchiMer
Souchu, Philippe; Vaquer A, André; Collos, Yves; Landrein, Sonia; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Bibent, Bertrand.
Thau lagoon is a Mediterranean shellfish ecosystem with large biomasses of oysters growing in waters with high residence time due to low tidal ranges, The influence of filter feeders (oysters and their epibiota) on the spatial distribution of particulate and dissolved compounds in the water column of Thau lagoon was studied through its variation with time, In 1991/1992, daily variations were investigated in pens, corridors and outside shellfish farming zones for nutrients, chlorophyll a and primary production. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter and chlorophyll a were also monitored in surface waters inside and outside shellfish farming zones each week from January 1993 to March 1994. The presence of shellfish farms led to a decrease by...

Nutrient cycling in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean over the last 50,000 years ArchiMer
Crosta, X; Shemesh, A; Etourneau, J; Yam, R; Billy, I; Pichon, Jj.
Most high-southern latitude records of carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios and elemental ratios are from the Antarctic and Polar Front zones, thus hindering a comprehensive view of nutrient cycling in the Southern Ocean. We present, for the first time, two records from the Subantarctic Zone and the southern Subtropical Zone of the Indian Ocean. These records provide a latitudinal transect covering the main oceanographic systems of the Southern Ocean. Carbon and nitrogen content of the diatom-bound organic matter increases during the last glacial in the Antarctic and Subantarctic zones but does not show a clear climate-related signal in the Subtropical Zone. Comparison of these records with sea-surface temperatures reconstructed at the core locations and...

Rôle des sédiments dans le cycle des nutriments et impacts sur l’eutrophisation des écosystèmes côtiers ArchiMer
Ratmaya, Widya.
Eutrophication was studied in the coastal waters of Vilaine Bay (VB) in relation to that in the Loire and Vilaine rivers, by analyzing long-term trends of phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations during the past decades. The reduction in dissolved riverine inorganic phosphorus concentrations (DIP) during the last two decades led to the significant decrease in chlorophyll a concentrations. However, dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations (DIN) decreased only slightly in the Vilaine and actually increased in the Loire, especially during summer. Simultaneously, phytoplankton in VB has undergone the following changes: 1) increase in biomass, 2) change in timing of the annual peak of biomass from spring to summer, 3) modification in seasonal course...

Atmospheric deposition of elements and its relevance for nutrient budgets of tropical forests ArchiMer
Van Langenhove, Leandro; Verryckt, Lore T.; Bréchet, Laëtitia; Courtois, Elodie A.; Stahl, Clement; Hofhansl, Florian; Bauters, Marijn; Sardans, Jordi; Boeckx, Pascal; Fransen, Erik; Peñuelas, Josep; Janssens, Ivan A..
Atmospheric deposition is an important component of the nutrient cycles of terrestrial ecosystems, but field measurements are especially scarce in tropical regions. In this study we analysed 15 months of precipitation chemistry collected in an old growth tropical forest located in French Guiana. We measured nutrient inputs via bulk precipitation and throughfall and used the canopy budget model to estimate nutrient fluxes via canopy exchange and dry deposition. Based on this method we quantified net fluxes of macronutrients and compared their contribution to internal cycling rates via litterfall. Our results suggest that while atmospheric deposition of nitrogen was relatively high (13 kg ha−1 year−1), and mainly in organic forms, the N inputs via litterfall...

Nutrient flux associated with the emergence of Quesada gigas Olivier (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) in an urban ecosystem Neotropical Entomology
Aoki,C; Lopes,FS; de Oliveira,AMR; Souza,FL de; Marques,MR.
Large-bodied arthropods, such as cicadas, can be able to reallocate significant amounts of nutrients during adult emergence. Evidence suggests that Quesada gigas Olivier emergence constitutes an important nutrient flux from belowground to aboveground. The purpose of this study was to estimate the amount of nitrogen, proteins, and lipids resulting from the emergence of Q. gigas in an urban ecosystem in Central Brazil. Adult specimens captured from September to November 2006 were weighed and submitted to biochemical analysis. Population density was approximately 4,200 individuals per hectare. Mean individual dry mass was 1.03 g and contained 12.6% proteins, 8.4% lipids, and 5% nitrogen. Total biomass input from the species was 4.3 kg ha-1 y-1, with a...

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of grazing intensity on the decomposition of cover crop pasture, dung, and soybean residues, as well as the C and N release rates from these residues in a long-term integrated soybean-beef cattle system under no-tillage. The experiment was initiated in 2001, with soybean cultivated in summer and black oat + Italian ryegrass in winter. The treatments consisted of four sward heights (10, 20, 30, and 40 cm), plus an ungrazed area, as the control. In 2009-2011, residues from pasture, dung, and soybean stems and leaves were placed in nylon-mesh litter bags and allowed to decompose for up to 258 days. With increasing grazing intensity, residual dry matter of the pasture decreased and that of dung...

Benthic macroinvertebrates and degradation of phytomass as indicators of ecosystem functions in flooded rice cropping PAB
Winckler,Lilian Terezinha; Güths,Angélica Konradt; Gayer,Pâmela Rodrigues.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the ecosystem functions of a natural wetland and of artificially flooded rice areas, managed under organic and conventional systems, by phytomass degradation and by the colonization of this material by benthic macroinvertebrates. The experiment was carried out in a natural wetland area, and in two flooded rice areas managed under organic and conventional systems. Twenty-five decomposition bags filled with 10 g of dry vegetation were installed in each site. At 14, 28, 42, 56, and 70 days after the beginning of the experiment, five bags from each site were collected. Macroinvertebrates were identified and classified by functional trophic group. The number of species of benthic macroinvertebrates increased:...

Soil carbon and nitrogen mineralization caused by pig slurry application under different soil tillage systems PAB
Balota,Elcio Liborio; Machineski,Oswaldo; Truber,Priscila Viviane.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the change in soil C and N mineralization due to successive pig slurry application under conventional tillage (CT) and no tillage (NT) systems. The experiment was carried out in a clayey Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico (Rhodic Eutrudox) in Palotina, PR, Brazil. Increasing doses of pig slurry (0, 30, 60 and 120 m³ ha-1 per year) were applied in both tillage systems, with three replicates. Half of the pig slurry was applied before summer soil preparation, and the other half before the winter crop season. The areas were cultivated with soybean (Glycine max L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) in the summers of 1998 and 1999, respectively, and with wheat (Triticum sativum Lam.) in the winters of both years. Soil samples were...

Litterfall and litter nutrient content in two Brazilian Tropical Forests Rev. Bras. Bot.
MORAES,REGINA MARIA DE; DELITTI,WELINGTON BRAZ CARVALHO; STRUFFALDI-DE VUONO,YARA.
Litterfall and transfer of nutrients was estimated in two tropical coastal forests of Brazil - the Atlantic and the Restinga Forests at Cardoso Island, São Paulo. Samples were collected monthly, from June 1990 to May 1991, using thirty 0.25 m2 traps. There were significant differences in litter production between the Atlantic Forest (6.3 t.ha-1.year-1) and the Restinga Forest (3.9 t.ha-1.year-1). Litterfall was continuous throughout the year with maximum in the beginning of the rainy season in both sites. The annual return of mineral elements through litter in the Atlantic Forest was (kg.ha-1): 101.8 N, 3.8 P, 20.3 K, 60.0 Ca, 18.0 Mg, and 14.6 S and in the Restinga Forest was: 27.5 N, 1.0 P, 6.5 K, 30.0 Ca, 10.9 Mg, and 6.6 S. The return, although small,...

Nutrient cycling disturbance in Atlantic Forest sites affected by air pollution coming from the industrial complex of Cubatão, Southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
DOMINGOS,MARISA; LOPES,MÁRCIA INÊS MARTIN SILVEIRA; STRUFFALDI-DE VUONO,YARA.
Several aspects of nutrient cycling were studied at two sites of Atlantic Forest, in São Paulo State, Southeast Brazil (23o46’ S; 46o18’ W), which exhibited different degrees of forest structure decline caused by the air pollution emitted by the industrial complex of Cubatão, being referred here as the most and least affected sites (MAS and LAS, respectively). These investigations were developed during 1984 - 1986, a period in which the most severe negative effects of air pollution could be observed. Concentrations and amounts of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S in four ecosystem compartments (leaves, litter layer, soil and roots) and in rainfall, throughfall and litterfall are briefly presented. At each site, the content of mineral elements generally decreased from...
