A regional analysis of weather mediated competition between a parasitoid and a coccinellid predator of oleander scale Neotropical Entomology
Gutierrez,Andrew P.; Pizzamiglio,Marina A..
The regulation of an asexual population of the oleander scale [Aspidiotus nerii Bouchè (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)] on California bay tree [Umbellularia californica (Hopk. & Arn.) Nut.] by two natural enemies; an idiobiont, ectoparasitoid Aphytis chilensis Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) and a coccinellid predator (Rhysobius lophanthae (Blaisd.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), was examined using a general weather-driven, tri-trophic, physiologically based age-mass structured demographic model. The model is of intermediate complexity and was parameterized using extensive laboratory data and field observations from Albany, CA. Temperature-dependent physiological indices were estimated from the laboratory data and used to scale per capita growth,...

Motives and barriers to development of organic olive production Organic Eprints
Iliopoulou, D; Douma, K; Giourga, C.
Environmental and health problems caused by conventional agriculture lead many farmers to organic agriculture, a system that has been rapidly developed worldwide. However, the adoption of organic farming is not an easy decision and it carries with it several barriers. Different interrelated factors are usually at play, rather than one decisive single motive, concerning financial, environmental, health issues and personal beliefs and values. This study aims to indentify the factors that encourage olive growers to adopt organic practices and the reasons that discourage them to continue. Moreover, it aims to answer the question whether the farmers would continue to grow in organic way, even if the compensatory payments will be reduced? The research is...

Manojlovic, M.; Cabilovski, R.; Kalentic, M.
The aim of this study was to examine on-farm the influence of organic farming systems on soil fertility, in order to recommend agrotechnical practices that will contribute to increase soil fertility, thus the yield and quality of cultivated plants. The survey was conducted at 7 representative farms in the system of control and certification in Vojvodina, northern Serbia, and within them, 55 production fields with different history of farming practices. Optimal to high soil fertility found in average in all investigated sites indicates that there are necessary natural preconditions for successful organic farming. The results showed high variability in soil fertility, both, between organic farming systems and between different sites. Significant differences...

The analysis of irreversibility, uncertainty and dynamic technical inefficiency on the investment decision in Spanish olive sector AgEcon
Lambarraa, Fatima; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Gil, Jose Maria.
The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the investment decision under uncertainty and irreversibility allowing for long run inefficiency. The analysis has been applied to a 158 Spanish olive farms using FADN data set. A real option approach has been used to analyse the decision to invest under uncertainty and irreversibility, and a dynamic stochastic frontier model has been developed to estimate the long run technical efficiency and it persistence. The results show that the technical inefficiency persistence parameter is fairly low to unity, which means that small technical inefficiency is transmitted to the next time period. The olive groves investment is irreversible and characterized by uncertainty on price and discount rate. An increase of...

Sonic anemometry and sediment traps to evaluate the effectiveness of windbreaks in preventing wind erosion Scientia Agricola
López,Alejandro; Valera,Diego Luis; Molina-Aiz,Francisco Domingo; Lozano,Francisco Javier; Asensio,Carlos.
ABSTRACT The present work analyzes the effectiveness of windbreaks against wind erosion through the study of streamline patterns and turbulent flow by means of sonic anemometry and sediment traps. To this end, windbreaks composed of plastic meshes (7.5 m long and 0.7 m tall) were used. Windbreaks are a good means to reduce wind erosion, as they produce a positive effect on the characteristics of air currents that are related to wind erosion processes. Due to their ease of installation and dismantling, plastic meshes are widely used in areas where they are not required permanently. In our study, the use of a mesh of 13 × 30 threads cm−2 and 39 % porosity resulted in an average reduction of 85 % in face velocity at a height of 0.4 m and a distance of 1 m...

Prado, Ernesto; Alvarenga, Thiago Marinho; Santa-Cecília, Lenira Viana Costa.
Black scale, Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) is an important pest of olive trees (Olea europaea L.) that requires the use insecticides for its control. Parasitoids are important regulating agents of this pest, but currently, no information on its complex of natural enemies and their impact on black scale in Brazilian conditions exists. This study focused on identifying parasitoid wasps that were associated with the black scale on olive trees to establish their relative abundance and rate of parasitism. Samplings were maintained in an olive orchard located in Maria da Fe, south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and infested branches were stored in emergence containers to recover parasitoids. Another group was kept in Flanders batteries...
