Climatic hazards such as floods and droughts have always been a primary matter of concern for human populations. Severe floods damage settlements, transport networks, and arable land. Although devastating droughts are harmful primarily for agriculture and terrestrial ecosystems, they can also lead to local water supply shortages. Despite significant achievements in science and technology and success stories in environmental management in the 20th century, people still continue to suffer the consequences of climate hazards worldwide. This paper provides an overview of existing practices for coping with floods and droughts, compares strategies in different river basins, and outlines the areas that need improvement. First, the existing protection measures and... |

River basin management is faced with complex problems that are characterized by uncertainty and change. In transboundary river basins, historical, legal, and cultural differences add to the complexity. The literature on adaptive management gives several suggestions for handling this complexity. It recognizes the importance of management regimes as enabling or limiting adaptive management, but there is no comprehensive overview of regime features that support adaptive management. This paper presents such an overview, focused on transboundary river basin management. It inventories the features that have been claimed to be central to effective transboundary river basin management and refines them using adaptive management literature. It then collates these... |

The experiment was conducted in an orchard located in University of Florida (Citrus Research and Education Center), Lake Alfred, Polk County, Florida, USA. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of water stress in root distribution of 'Valencia' orange tree on 'Swingle' citrumelo rootstock. Three treatments were imposed on the trees: 1) normal irrigation with microsprinklers, 2) no irrigation in winter (November through mid-March) and 3) rainfall exclusion by placing a water repelling fabric (Tyvek) under the trees. Trees in treatments 1 and 2 received normal rainfall during the winter, but treatment 3 received no rain. Normal irrigation was resumed on all treatments in mid March. Soil was collected using root auger head (0.09 m diameter... |

The technique of precision agriculture and soil-landscape allows delimiting areas for localized management, allowing a localized application of agricultural inputs and thereby may contribute to preservation of natural resources. Therefore, the objective of this work was to characterize the spatial variability of chemical properties and clay content in the context of soil-landscape relationship in a Latosol (Oxisol) under cultivation of citrus. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0.0-0.2 m in an area of 83.5 ha planted with citrus, as a 50-m intervals grid, with 129 points in concave terrain and 206 points in flat terrain, totaling 335 points. Values for the variables that express the chemical characteristics and clay content of soil properties were... |

Out of the 18,942 flavedo expressed sequences (clusters plus singletons) in Citrus sinensis from the Citrus EST Project (CitEST), 25 were statistically supported to be differentially expressed in this tissue after a double in silico hybridization strategy against leaf-, flower-, and bark-derived ESTs. Five of them, two terpene synthases and three O-methyltransferases, are absent in the other citrus tissues with concomitant 2x2 statistics, supporting the hypothesis that they are putative flavedo-specific expressed sequences. The pattern of these differentially expressed sequences during fruit development suggests that most of them are developmentally regulated. Some expressed gene products, including a putative germin-like protein highly expressed in... |

Terpenoids constitute the largest and most diverse class of natural products. They are important factors for aroma and flavor, and their synthesis is basically done from two compounds: isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate. Isopentenyl diphosphate is synthesized through two different pathways, one that occurs in the cytoplasm and one in the plastid. With the sequencing of ESTs from citrus, we were able to perform in silico analyses on the pathways that lead to the synthesis of terpenes as well as on the terpene synthases present in sweet orange. Moreover, expression analysis using real-time qPCR was performed to verify the expression pattern of a terpene synthase in plants. The results show that all the pathways for isopentenyl diphosphate... |

Losses due to postharvest decay may occur at any time during postharvest handling, from harvest to consumption affecting the produce quality and quantity. Accurate identification of the pathogen causing postharvest disease is essential to the selection of an appropriate disease control approach. Nine isolates of Fusarium recovered from orange fruit were identified as Fusarium solani. The fungus is involved with fruit decay. The obtained cultures were purified and grown on potato-dextrose agar (PDA), malt yeast agar (MYA), and Czapek's nutrient media (CNM) under light for identification. A pathogenicity test was carried out to fulfil Koch's postulates. The pathogen could only enter ripe orange fruit through wounds and cracks causing the rot disease. The... |

This current study aims to identify the most feasible type of packages for fresh oranges, produced and commercialized in the São Paulo state. In order to do so, three studies of specific cases were considered, under the context of multi cases. It was aimed to determine the cost of processing, packaging and transporting related to the orange commercialization aimed at customers such as wholesalers, supermarkets and Supplying Centers (CEASA’s), from a Packing-House. The results presented and analyzed in this study allowed to indicate that, in general terms, there is no package more feasible economically speaking, considering its use. What was really observed was that there is a package that is more feasible for each producer considering his specific... |

On the basis of expounding the status quo of China’s orange drought warning model research, according to the real-time monitoring data of Beibei Orangery in Chongqing City from June to August in 2010, by using factor analysis and principal component regression, we construct the drought warning model of Beibei Orangery in Chongqing City, and we conduct test and correction on drought warning model by using MAPE principle of assessment and prediction accuracy and the real-time monitoring data of September. The results show that as for the prediction of orange drought, the model has strong credibility. If we conduct continuous dynamic monitoring on the relevant indices regarding orange drought by virtue of this model, and pay attention to the analysis of... |

ABSTRACT Aspects related to the floral biology of Citrus sinensis ‘Pera Rio’ variety were studied in the present work aiming to obtain information about the pollination ecology in the local agriculture. Studies of flowering, anthesis, pollen / ovule ratio, stigmatic receptivity, pollen viability, nectar characterization and floral visitors were carried out. From the data studied, the following information was obtained: C. sinensis variety ‘Pera Rio’ flourishes in two annual periods (dry and rainy), the anthesis occurs from 9:00 AM with duration of 24 hours, during which period stigma receptivity, pollen viability and nectar secretion are highly significant, demonstrating that the species also possesses characteristics of allogenic plants. Apis mellifera... |

Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of different orange cultivars (Citrus sinensis) in order to identify those with potential to the consumer market and/or for processing. Five orange cultivars were evaluated: ‘Natal IAC’, ‘Natal 112’, ‘Pera IAC 2000’, ‘Pera IAC’, ‘Baianinha’ and ‘Pera Rio’, which were harvested at maturation stage considered ideal for commercialization in the “Agência Goiana de Assistência Técnica, Extensão Rural e Pesquisa Agropecuária – EMATER” experimental orchard at the municipality of Anápolis, state of Goiás. After harvesting, fruits were transported to the laboratory, selected, standardized, washed and allowed to dry. Subsequently, skin color, longitudinal and cross-sectional diameter, number... |

OranOrange has abundant nutritional properties and is consumed worldwide. Sorting oranges of different masses based on their physical traits could help reduce packaging and transportation cost. The ‘Blood’ cultivar of Iranian oranges from Kermanshah province of Iran (7.03 °E 4.22 °N) was used in this study. 100 samples were randomly selected. During the two-day experiment, all measurements were carried out inside the laboratory at mean temperature of 24°C. In this study, some physical properties of ‘Blood’ orange were measured, such as length, width, thickness, volume, mass, mean value of geometric diameter, sphericity and projected area. ANFIS and linear regression models were employed to predict the mass based on sphericity and mean of projected... |
