The so-called 8.2 ka event represents one of the most prominent cold climate anomalies during the Holocene warm period. Accordingly, several studies have addressed its trigger mechanisms, absolute dating and regional characteristics so far. However, knowledge about subsequent climate recovery is still limited although this might be essential for the understanding of rapid climatic changes. Benthic foraminifera assemblages from a sedimentary core (PP10-12; 701 mwd) from the SE Bay of Biscay allow us to trace palaeoceanographic and palaeoclimatic changes occurred in this region during mid MIS 3 (Marine Isotope Stage 3) and MIS 1 interval (37–2.4 ka BP). Results are based on 176 benthic foraminifera species considering their ecology, the difference between autochthonous/allochthonous, preservation and oxygen rates, thus evidencing climatic and oceanographic events. MIS 3 is characterised by waters with a dominance of Cassidulina laevigata and Uvigerina peregrina. The awareness of the significance of the Southern Ocean in the Earth's climate system has become increasingly obvious. The deglacial atmospheric CO2 rise during warming periods in Antarctica has been attributed to CO2 ventilation from the deep ocean caused by enhanced upwelling around the Antarctic Divergence. It has been hypothesized that, more intense Southern Hemisphere westerly winds aligned with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current due to a southward shift of the wind belt from its Last Glacial Maximum equator-ward position, are the main drivers.
