Biometry of neotropical invertebrates inhabiting floodplain rivers: unraveling bionomy Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Zilli,Florencia; Barco,Julia del; Vanzetti,Agustín.
ABSTRACT Currently, it is widely recognized that invertebrates play key roles in neotropical floodplains and in many other environments worldwide. However, little information has been published concerning their biometry, in spite that it represents an essential tool for many different studies. Here, we provided length-mass and length-length relationships by fitting the linearized model (log10 Y = log10a + b log10 X) and several mean biomass ratios ± SE for bivalves, gastropods, quironomids, ephemeropterans, oligochaetes and hirudineans. We measured, weighed, oven dried and incinerated to ashes specimens collected from 2005 to 2014 in the Paraná River, Argentina. The lineal equations had fit levels higher than 75% in most of the significant regressions....

Taxonomic and numeric structure of Chironomidae (Diptera) in different habitats of a Neotropical floodplain Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Butakka,Cristina Márcia de Menezes; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Takeda,Alice Michiyo.
We characterized the local benthic Chironomidae by analyzing the numerical density, biomass, diversity index of Shannon-Wiener and dominance of larvae in the main channel of the Ivinhema River, in a secondary channel, in five lakes connected to the main channel and in five lakes without connection. Of the 68 taxa identified, Aedokritus sp., Tanytarsus sp., Chironomus strenzkei Fittkau, 1968 and Procladius sp.1 were found in all sampling sites and were considered morphospecies with greater of greatest ecological plasticity. Chironomus strenzkei Fittkau, 1968, contributed with the greatest biomass in the central region of lakes without connection, whereas Aedokritus sp. dominated in the littoral of lakes. The greater values of diversity indices in the...

A closer look at the main actors of Neotropical floodplain food webs: functional classification and niche overlap of dominant benthic invertebrates in a floodplain lake of Paraná River Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Saigo,Miguel; Marchese,Mercedes; Wantzen,Karl Matthias.
ABSTRACT Functional classification of animals is necessary to enhance the predictive power of food web models. However, while there is a large database for functional classification of benthic invertebrates (Functional Feeding Groups, FFG) in the temperate zone, the attribution of individual species of riverine invertebrates is still in its infancies in the Neotropical Region. Different authors hypothesized that diet breadth was larger in the Tropics, however detailed analysis are scarce. In the present study we aimed at classifying dominant benthic taxa of the Middle Paraná River floodplain (Argentina) into trophic guilds by diet and niche overlap analyses. We sampled twelve taxa of benthic invertebrates from a floodplain lake during low water season and...

Trophic relationships in fish assemblages of Neotropical floodplain lakes: selectivity and feeding overlap mediated by food availability Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Dias,Rosa Maria; Ortega,Jean Carlo Gonçalves; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
ABSTRACT. The relationships between the degree of dietary overlap and food availability, and implications for food selectivity of fish species were evaluated at floodplain lakes on the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. The hypothesis tested were: i) species become less selective in lakes with high availability of food resources; and ii) species (interspecific) or individual (intraspecific) present higher food overlap in conditions of high availability of food resources. In general, with the results was observed that species become less selective when the environment provided higher availability of food resources. Interspecific overlap did not show a pattern when evaluating availability of food resources in the lakes. However, intraspecific overlap...

Population structure, growth and fishery yield of Leporinus acutidens (Valenciennes, 1837) (Teleostei: Anostomidae) in Yacyretá Reservoir (Argentina) Neotropical Ichthyology
Araya,Patricia R.; Agostinho,Angelo A.; Bechara,José A..
The population structure and dynamics of Leporinus acutidens (Valenciennes, 1837), upstream from Yacyretá Dam (Upper Paraná River, Argentina) were analyzed for their relation to age, condition factor, growth, mortality and fishery yield. The pre- (1990-94) and post- (1995-98) filling phases of the reservoir were compared with regard to age structure, condition factor, and the length/weight relationship of fish. Fish sampling was carried out at four sampling sites following a longitudinal gradient along the river. The catches took place monthly using eight monofilament gillnets (mesh 40 to 160 mm). The growth marks on the scales were annual (9-year maximum). The study of the variation in the monthly averages of the scale marginal increments revealed that...

Utilization of the fish ladder at the Engenheiro Sergio Motta Dam, Brazil, by long distance migrating potamodromous species Neotropical Ichthyology
Makrakis,Sérgio; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Wagner,Ricardo Luiz; Dias,João Henrique Pinheiro; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
Utilization of the fish ladder installed at the Engenheiro Sergio Motta Dam (also known as Porto Primavera) on the Paraná River, Southern Brazil, by long-distance migrating potamodromous species (sampling Protocol I), and ascending and descending movements (Protocol II) were evaluated. Three pools along the fish ladder (designated as lower, middle, and upper) were sampled monthly between December, 2004 and March, 2005 to determine the abundance of species in the ladder. The ascending and descending movements of the species in the ladder were also analyzed in the same period. In the samples for both protocols, 37 species representing 17 families and 5 orders (Characiformes, Siluriformes, Perciformes, Gymnotiformes, and Myliobatiformes) were recorded....

Environmental factors related to entry into and ascent of fish in the experimental ladder located close to Itaipu Dam Neotropical Ichthyology
Fernandez,Domingo Rodrigues; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Bini,Luis Maurício; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
We evaluated the seasonality of the ascent of fish in an experimental ladder located close to Itaipu Dam, and its relationships to reproduction, temperature, river level and discharge. Samplings of fish and measurements of abiotic factors were performed from February, 1995 through January, 1997, in two resting pools of the ladder. Pool A was located 10 m above the mean level of the Paraná River; Pool B was located at the upper end of the ladder, at a height of 27 m. Autoregressive models were used to remove the temporal dependence between observations. Residuals of the models were used to relate, using Pearson's correlation coefficient, the densities of fish to the environmental variables. Clear patterns of seasonality were observed for temperature. River...

The Canal da Piracema at Itaipu Dam as a fish pass system Neotropical Ichthyology
Makrakis,Sérgio; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Makrakis,Maristela Cavicchioli; Fernandez,Domingo Rodriguez; Pavanelli,Carla Simone.
The Canal da Piracema is the longest (nearly 10 km) fish pass system in the world. The construction of this fish pass was somehow controversial, because it connected two distinct ichthyofaunistic provinces. This study evaluated the ichthyofauna present in the Canal da Piracema and the abundance and distribution of long-distance migratory fish species along this fish pass system (evaluated possible selectivity). The Canal da Piracema was shown to be difficult to sample because of its environmental heterogeneity: artificial ponds, ladders and nature-like fish pass. To solve this problem, we used several fishing gears, adequate for the several biotopes present (unstructured and structured littoral were sampled with seining nets and electrofishing; lentic were...

Cytogenetics of Gymnogeophagus setequedas (Cichlidae: Geophaginae), with comments on its geographical distribution Neotropical Ichthyology
Paiz,Leonardo M.; Baumgärtner,Lucas; Graça,Weferson J. da; Margarido,Vladimir P.; Pavanelli,Carla S..
ABSTRACT We provide cytogenetic data for the threatened species Gymnogeophagus setequedas, and the first record of that species collected in the Iguaçu River, within the Iguaçu National Park’s area of environmental preservation, which is an unexpected occurrence for that species. We verified a diploid number of 2n = 48 chromosomes (4sm + 24st + 20a) and the presence of heterochromatin in centromeric and pericentromeric regions, which are conserved characters in the Geophagini. The multiple nucleolar organizer regions observed in G. setequedas are considered to be apomorphic characters in the Geophagini, whereas the simple 5S rDNA cistrons located interstitially on the long arm of subtelocentric chromosomes represent a plesiomorphic character. Because G....

Blockage of migration routes by dam construction: can migratory fish find alternative routes? Neotropical Ichthyology
Antonio,Rosimeire Ribeiro; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Pelicice,Fernando Mayer; Bailly,Dayani; Okada,Edson Kioshi; Dias,João Henrique Pinheiro.
The present study explored the interaction between the upriver migration of fish and the blockage of their migration routes by dam construction. Specifically, we studied (i) the capacity of migratory fish to locate alternative routes in the presence of an obstacle, and (ii) the behavior of the fish after they were artificially transferred to the reservoir. With the use of the mark-recapture technique (tagging), the study was carried out near Porto Primavera Dam (UHE Engenheiro Sérgio Motta) between 1994 and 1999, a period prior to the closure of the floodgates and the installation and operation of the fish pass facilities. The fish were caught in the dam forebay downstream, marked with LEA type tags, and released upstream (5113 individuals; 14 species) and...

Escapes of non-native fish from flooded aquaculture facilities: the case of Paranapanema River, southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Casimiro,Armando César Rodrigues; Garcia,Diego Azevedo Zoccal; Vidotto-Magnoni,Ana Paula; Britton,John Robert; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio; Almeida,Fernanda Simões de; Orsi,Mário Luís.
ABSTRACT Non-native species are a major driver of biodiversity loss. Aquaculture activities play a key role in introductions, including the escape of fishes from fish farm facilities. Here, the impact of flooding due to El Niño rains in 2015/2016 in the Lower and Middle Paranapanema River basin, southern Brazil, was investigated by evaluating fish escapes from 12 fish farms. The flooding resulted in the escape of approximately 1.14 million fishes into the river, encompassing 21 species and three hybrids. Non-native species were the most abundant escapees, especially Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Coptodon rendalli (Boulenger, 1897) (96% of all fish). Only seven native fishes were in the escapee fauna, comprising 1% of all fish. Large floods,...

Morphological description of larvae of the Mapará Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix) (Osteichthyes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu reservoir (Parana River, Brazil) Zoologia
Nakatani,Keshiyu; Baumgartner,Gilmar; Latini,João Dirço.
The ontogenetic aspects of larvae of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) from the ichthyoplankton samples collected in the Itaipu reservoir between March 1988 and April 1990 were analysed. Sample were caught by 0.5 mm mesh conic-cylindrical plankton net. Larvae of H. edentatus were identified and described as Siluriforms from the morphological and morphometric development series. They have a small to medium-sized head, long body, small eyes, little pigmentation, mandibular barbules and 53 to 56 myomeres. High values obtained with correlation coefficient (r > 0.97; p < 0.001) show that growth was proportional in different parts of the body.

Metazoan endoparasites of Brycon orbignyanus (Characidae: Bryconinae) in a neotropical floodplain Biological Sciences
Fernandes, Eliane da Silva; Casali, Guilherme Pomaro; Takemoto, Ricardo Massato.
Species richness and composition are central themes in community ecology of helminths because they improve the understanding of factors that determine community structure. Floodplain ecosystems and the environmental alterations induced by hydrological cycles are factors that maintain biodiversity over time, as observed in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, where the individuals of Brycon orbignyanus were collected. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether variables such as the richness and abundance of endoparasites are related to the fish size during different hydrological periods (high and low waters). A total of 163 endoparasites belonging to 13 species were collected in the 104 fish examined. Fish size had a positive correlation with mean...

ABSTRACT The genera Hemigrammus and Moenkhausia have been traditionally diagnosed mainly by the former having lateral line completely pored whereas the latter having a lateral line with a few pored scales. Those features have been used to diagnose species of both genera in the upper Paraná River floodplain. Specimens with the diagnostic features of Moenkhausia bonita, collected in the upper Paraná River floodplain, exhibited different developmental levels of the lateral line, making it difficult to distinguish them from specimens of Hemigrammus sp. We analyzed the gene encoding cytochrome C oxidase I (COI) and intron 1 of the nuclear gene S7 to investigate the genetic similarities between the called Hemigrammus marginatus and M. bonita and to confirm their...
