Patterns of molecular evolution in pathogenesis-related proteins Genet. Mol. Biol.
Scherer,Nicole M.; Thompson,Claudia E.; Freitas,Loreta B.; Bonatto,Sandro L.; Salzano,Francisco M..
The genes encoding 13 classes of pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins were examined for positive selection using maximum-likelihood (ML) models of codon substitution. The study involved 194 sequences from 54 species belonging to 37 genera. Although the sizes of the sequences examined varied from 237 bp for PR12 to 1,110 bp for PR7, most classes (9 out of 13) contained sequences made up of more than 400 nucleotides. Signs of positive selection were obtained for sites in PR proteins 4, 6, 8, 9 and 15 using an ML-based Bayesian method and likelihood ratio tests. These results confirm the importance of positive selection in proteins related to defense mechanisms already observed in a wide array of organisms.

PR gene families of citrus: their organ specific-biotic and abiotic inducible expression profiles based on ESTs approach Genet. Mol. Biol.
Campos,Magnólia A.; Rosa,Daniel D.; Teixeira,Juliana Érika C.; Targon,Maria Luisa P.N.; Souza,Alessandra A.; Paiva,Luciano V.; Stach-Machado,Dagmar R.; Machado,Marcos A..
In silico expression profiles, of the discovered 3,103 citrus ESTs putatively encoding for PR protein families (PR-1 to PR-17), were evaluated using the Brazil citrus genome EST CitEST/database. Hierarchical clustering was displayed to identify similarities in expression patterns among citrus PR-like gene families (PRlgf) in 33 selected cDNA libraries. In this way, PRlgf preferentially expressed by organ and citrus species, and library conditions were highlighted. Changes in expression profiles of clusters for each of the 17 PRlgf expressed in organs infected by pathogens or drought-stressed citrus species were displayed for relative suppression or induction gene expression in relation to the counterpart control. Overall, few PRlgf showed expression 2-fold...

Induction of phenolics and defense-related enzymes in coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) roots treated with biocontrol agents Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Karthikeyan,M.; Radhika,K.; Mathiyazhagan,S.; Bhaskaran,R.; Samiyappan,R.; Velazhahan,R..
The effect of soil application of biocontrol agents (Pseudomonas fluorescens, Trichoderma viride and T. harzianum) in combination with chitin on induction of phenolics and defense enzymes in coconut roots infected with Ganoderma lucidum, the causal agent of Ganoderma disease, was investigated. Soil application of these biocontrol formulations in combination with chitin induced a significant increase in the activities of peroxidase (PO), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chitinase and beta-1,3-glucanase in the G. lucidum infected palms. Activities of both PAL and PO reached maximum levels within 3 d while the activity of PPO reached the maximum level 6 d after application of a mixture of P. fluorescens, T. viride and chitin....
