The black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera lives and reproduces with high performance in most of Tuamotu Lagoons. Technics to collect spats, to culture juveniles and to operate oysters were quickly found and applicated. Nevertheless, the sudden rise of this activity has been correlated with an anarchic development. For instance, large occupation of areas in the lagoons, cultivation of numerous oysters in confined areas, lack of knowledge on the basis culture technics in many farms. In 1985, mass mortalities have appeared in some lagoons and 50 to 80% of cultured stock died. Some investigations have been done but no explanation was found. Three mollusc species are cultured commercially in Australian tropical and warm temperate waters: the Sydney rock oyster Saccostrea commercialis , the pearl rock oyster is susceptible to two protozoans: Marteilia sydneyi , which is the cause of QX Disease and infects oysters during the summer; and Mikrocytos roughleyi which is associated with winter mortality. It also harbours mudworm, Polydora websteri a parasite farmers try to avoid by growing oysters on racks. Transported pearl oysters Pinctada maxima die with heavy infections of Vibrio harveyi . Cultured giant clams Tridacna gigas are pestered by pyramidellid snails and some carry Perkinsus sp., a protozoan common in reef bivalves. Integrated management of pearl culture in French Polynesia in the context of global change: Synopsis of existing results ArchiMer

The paper presents a state of the art on knowledge of the black pearl oyster aquaculture at the scale of French Polynesia. It also introduces the main results obtained throughout the multi-partners POLYPERL project. The goal of this project was to develop an integrated and participative action-research of the pearl oyster culture system, focusing on the environmental, technological, economical and societal dimensions impacting the industry. The research proposed ranges from the understanding of biological phenomena of the production system to socio-economic aspects and governance of the industry, taking into account the management of anthropogenic, climate and health risks. Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, in suspended culture under hydrobiological conditions of Takapoto lagoon (French Polynesia) ArchiMer

Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi, was studied for an annual cycle, from March 1997 to April 1998, in the lagoon of Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia). Growth in shell and in tissue were measured every 15 days on three successive age groups of cultivated pearl oysters. At the same time, hydrobiological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, suspended particulate matter), known to have influence on bivalve growth, were followed each week during culture. No seasonal trend was observed in hydrobiological parameters, except for temperature which varied between 26 degrees C and 31 degrees C. Results of SFA preliminary experiments on artificial spat collection of the black pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera OceanDocs

Forty oyster spat collector bags were submerged at two different sites near Mahe island fofr a period between 3.2 and 11 months. Strong currents in the south-east monsoon period resulted in a few bags lying in the sand which was detrimental to spat settlement. The mean settlement rate was calculated at 15.6 oysters per bag, however 71_310= of the bags had more than 10 oysters per bag. Considering only those bags, the settlement averaged at 27 oysters per bag. The sizes of oysters in collector bags after different soaking times, indicate that growth rate in the first few months is higher than on French Polynesia. Growth rates of oysters maintained in a cage indicated an average increase of 21.7 mm in five months, between the size of 25.9 mm and 47.76 mm....
